Flush then wash or wash then flush?

We just went in a family toilet to change the baby and try to put the toddler on the toilet. It was a set up where the sink is in the same cubicle as the toilet.

Anyway DH used the loo too then washed his hands then flushed the toilet.

I said oh, you should flush before you wash. He said most people would do the inverseand therefore the flush handle would be clean and should be kept clean by washing hands first.

He rolled his eyes.

What do you do? Obviously in a normal multi cubicle situation you have to flush before you wash but this set up is a bit more like home, so in this particular situation please.

Yabu - wash then flush
Yanbu - flush then wash

Flush then wash. Obviously!

AbjectHorror · 18/06/2021 20:39

Obviously your way! Flush then wash. YANBU.

Idroppedthescrewinthetuna · 18/06/2021 20:39

Can you please have my first ever LTB?

Youdoyoutoday · 18/06/2021 20:44

Press the flush with a piece of tissue then wash hands but I admit I'm ever so slightly weird about things like this.

Youdoyoutoday · 18/06/2021 20:45

Then hand sanitizer once I've left the toilets past all doors.

DinosaurDiana · 18/06/2021 20:45

Flush then wash. He’s gross.

Bitofachinwag · 18/06/2021 20:45

100% Saying flush then wash!

Paul72 · 18/06/2021 20:52

Does it matter? There are far more important things in life.

NouvelleMamanNouvelleVie · 18/06/2021 20:55

Hygiene and the health that does or does not result are fairly important, but yes there are more important things.
Have you posted that on a lot of threads this evening? 🤣

"most people would do the inverse and therefore the flush handle would be clean and should be kept clean by washing hands first."

If even one person doesn't, and I believe most people don't, then you've got someone else's germs all over your hands. It's a stupid, unhygienic gamble.

HailingTaxis · 18/06/2021 20:59

Lol at there being far more important things.

There is only one "most important thing", surely? No idea what it is, but what shall we do in the meantime, whilst we wait to find out what that most important thing is, if we shouldn't discuss any other thing?

Anyway, obvs its flush then wash. Even at home. Everywhere it is flush then wash. For the very obvious reason you state.

AnUnoriginalUsername · 18/06/2021 21:00

Why would you not wash your hands after touching a toilet flusher? Of course they're not clean. People flush them with their shoes.

Your DH is totally wrong! Flushes are covered in faecal bacteria (and sometimes stomach viruses) and you absolutely have to wash your hands afterwards!

If it was a toilet where you handwash before opening the door then I'd also be inclined to wash my hands after unlocking the door as so many people don't wash their hands!

lottiegarbanzo · 18/06/2021 21:06

You could always wash twice. Don't forget the manky light switch, door lock and handle.

Topseyt · 18/06/2021 21:07

Flush and then wash. It is the only way and it is obligatory.

lottiegarbanzo · 18/06/2021 21:08

What is the most important thing in life btw? Just while we're waiting to resolve the flush / wash question.

ShowOfHands · 18/06/2021 21:10

Oh sweet Moses.

Of course people flush first and then wash. The flushing is part of the ritual of going to the loo. You wash at the end of the process, not 25m before the finish line.

ShowOfHands · 18/06/2021 21:10

The most important thing in life is books BTW. Or gingerbread. Or the canonisation of David Mitchell. Any of the above.

Northernsoullover · 18/06/2021 21:11

Flush, wash, then open doors with a wad of tissue.

NouvelleMamanNouvelleVie · 18/06/2021 21:13

He thinks we're that weak-minded?

That's a concern.

lottiegarbanzo · 18/06/2021 21:16

But who wants to wash, feel clean and ready to leave, then have to look back at a dirty toilet bowl? Yeeeuuuch. That just feels filthy.

PurpleyBlue · 18/06/2021 21:17

He's basically picking up random people's shit on his hands and then spreading it on to the door handles. He's also contaminating the taps.

FishyMcFishyfingersFace · 18/06/2021 21:19

If everybody else flushes then washes that means your dh is washing his hands then using his clean hand to touch a flush handle that has been touched by numerous people who have the possibility of having traces of wee, poo and maybe other bodily fluids on their hands.

Flush first, wash second.

SticksAndStoned · 18/06/2021 21:20

Flush then wash.

The flushing a toilet throws up bus of whatever is in the toilet, and the flush is usually a nearby surface, so it's not going to be great...
