I dropped DD's friend home after college today and whilst chatting to her mum on their doorstep (don't know her very well) DD's friend came up behind her and put her arms around her neck and just hugged her from behind/to the side if that makes any sense! It was all very natural and sweet. Her mum just carried on chatting. I must admit I was a bit jealous as I can't imagine my DDs doing that, especially in front of their friends! We do hug as a thank you or when saying goodbye that's about it and we do have a good relationship. Would any of your teens do that?

13 year old DS would. 17 year old DS would not and 10 year old DD is mortified if I acknowledge her in public.

NotRainingToday · 18/06/2021 18:50

My girls (18 and 15) would absolutely do that. My son (20) not so much, in fact not at all.

JustDanceAddict · 18/06/2021 18:53

Mine don’t in front of their friends/my friends.
Daughter is more likely to spontaneously hug/snuggle. Sometimes in public, but not when friends are about.
Son only hugs when he’s upset although will let me hug him - not in front of others though.
I have seen their friends hug their mums in front of me/their friends, I think it’s nice. These mums are huggy though and will hug my DCs when they see them.

Godmothered · 18/06/2021 18:56

It sounds very sweet. Mine are younger so still quite cuddly but I know I was like that with my mum as a teenager. I'd still like to sit on her lap and have a cuddle now but I'd probably crush her legs!

NotAnotherPushyMum · 18/06/2021 18:56

Yes, mine would. Dd13 and ds16

PeskyRooks · 18/06/2021 18:57

Yes dd14 and ds13 are always hugging me although ds will sometimes dress it up as 'pick me up mum' or 'try and push me over'! (He's nearly 6ft I'm only 5ft 7)

dalrympy · 18/06/2021 20:26

Hmmmm. No DD14 probably wouldn't. She doesn't instigate contact with anyone but she is getting better.

I do it to my mum all the time though lol

DifficultPifcultLemonDifficult · 18/06/2021 20:32

I have 3 teens. Oldest is 19 and hugs me when I see him, calls to tell me he loves me, messages me a lot and buys me little gifts etc (lives in his own place). 17yo has never been a hugger, but will allow one on birthdays and one at Christmas, he shows his affection in other ways though 🤣 13yo holds my hand, hugs me all the time, tells me she loves me every 2 minutes.

CurlyMango · 18/06/2021 21:10

My sixteen years olds both would and do

BarbarianMum · 18/06/2021 21:27

Ds1 (15) no. Ds2 (13) is like a cat: affection when he feels the need only and generally at a time that is inconvenient for me. So not in the situation you describe.

LuaDipa · 18/06/2021 21:33

Mine usually only hug goodbye or goodnight or if I beg ask nowadays. I’m a bit jealous too.

GoWalkabout · 18/06/2021 21:35

No. I hugged her this morning when she was crying in pain but that was the second time this year and she kind of stiffens and recoils 😁. Dd2 is a little more tactile but would still look alarmed if I went in for more than a quick air hug.

Twoforthree · 18/06/2021 21:40

Ds and dd would but definitely not in front of friends for ds.

Rosebel · 18/06/2021 21:46

I get goodnight kisses and hugs off my nearly 13 and nearly 15 years old DDs. Almost 15 years old is more affectionate and will quite often give me a random hug. Can't ever imagine her doing it in front of her mates though

Sillawithans · 18/06/2021 21:47

@Miseryl that made me burst out laughing Grin

cappuccinoandcats · 18/06/2021 21:47

My DS doesn't like being touched. I am very envious when I see this

gabsdot45 · 19/06/2021 21:53

Yes. He really does

Dropdeadfred2 · 19/06/2021 21:56

Yes my 16 year old is still very affectionate..sometimes even shares my bed if we watch a movie

Waterfallgirl · 19/06/2021 21:58

@Miseryl

No sadly my 15 year old DS acts as though he's being tasered if I attempt any physical affection! I get a half hearted kiss and cuddle on special occasions, at my behest! 😂
😂 @Miseryl Yep same here.
DaxtheDestroyer · 19/06/2021 22:01

15yo DC would, very cuddly and loves cuddling up on the sofa etc. 13yo DC probably wouldn't during the day but always comes for a kiss and a cuddle at bedtime.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 19/06/2021 22:24

LOTS of hugs from DS16, but only occasional and grudging ones from DS14. They're all different

PenguinIce · 19/06/2021 22:45

No my teen dc like to pretend I don’t exist unless they want money, food or lifts! I live in hope the cuddles will come back once they leave the teen years behind.

Abc321xyz · 19/06/2021 22:50

My DD15 hugs, kisses and hold hands with me in public. My DS15 says 'I love you' at the end of every phone call, every time he leaves the house. Even around his friends. DD14 hugs me in the house, again, 'I love you' every phone call or parting.

IthinkIsawahairbrushbackthere · 19/06/2021 22:52

They all were until they left home. Youngest is 19 and home from university. We are spending time every day snuggling under a blanket and binge watching Call the Midwife.

BetsyBigNose · 19/06/2021 23:26

Yep, all the time! DD12 and DD14, both still very cuddly - will curl up next to me on the sofa, hug hello and goodbye (even in front of friends) and we link arms (instigated by them rather than me, I'd actually quite like a bit of space occasionally!) when we're walking out and about. They're slightly less sunggly with DH, but will still happily initiate hugs hello and goodbye.

I still hug my DM when I see her, and I link arms with her as we're walking too - perhaps she'd actually prefer a bit of space from her DD too... I hadn't thought of that!
