My 18 year old Toyota Yaris, has finally, spectacularly failed it's MOT. It has been the best car ever, has never gone wrong, let me down or had any ££ spent on it and owes me nothing.

So I'm now in the market for a new vehicle. My requirements are:

  • Very compact for squeezing into city parking spaces.
  • 90% journeys are in city, may need to commute in future.
  • But can happily seat 4 for longer journeys (have a 2nd vehicle for big trips)
  • As eco-friendly as possible - would love electric but no off street parking, have been looking at hybrids.
  • 5 doors
  • really reliable
  • up to about £10000.

I've been looking at Yaris Hybrids but wondering what others I should look at.

Skoda Citigo - very economical and nice to drive.

inmyslippers · 18/06/2021 16:40

Honda CR-V ?

SiobhanSharpe · 18/06/2021 16:49

Isn’t a Honda CR-V quite a large (and expensive ) SUV?

MiloAndEddie · 18/06/2021 16:52

A Honda CRV is the opposite of compact!

VW Up or Polo?

Toyota Aygo

I had a Peugeot 307(?) as a courtesy car once and it was compact but surprisingly spacious

EL8888 · 18/06/2021 16:53

RIP your Yaris. They go on for ever!

Not sure what to recommend but intrigued him know other people’s thoughts. As we need to get a 2nd car and our criteria is similar to yours

Spiderplantsoutside · 18/06/2021 16:54

How new are you hoping for with that budget?

velveteencushion · 18/06/2021 16:58

@Spiderplantsoutside maybe 2015 onwards?

I have a Mazda 2 Tamura

Love it!

EssentialHummus · 18/06/2021 17:04

I’d just go for a newer Yaris / Micra / Jazz tbh.

DynamoKev · 18/06/2021 17:05

What has your car failed on?
Yaris Hybrid is well in budget and seems the obvious answer.

Meredusoleil · 18/06/2021 17:15

I would be careful about getting a Japanese hybrid, as in my area at least, lots of catalytic converters are being stolen off them 😏

MrsW150917 · 18/06/2021 17:18

Toyota CHR hybrids are lovely cars

ConsuelaHammock · 18/06/2021 17:18

Another Toyota! What about an auris ?

SusannahD · 18/06/2021 17:20

Honda jazz?

allmycats · 18/06/2021 17:21

Soda Citigo

sbhydrogen · 18/06/2021 17:22

I had a rental Hyundai i10 and it was so much fun! Not sure if it comes in a hybrid version but it's cheap and cheerful.

Grenlei · 18/06/2021 17:27

OP, If your car has been reliable up to now and you've not spent much on it, and presumably the engine is still running, is it not worth repairing? In the sense that whilst the repairs may cost as much as the car is worth, it's given you years of trouble free motoring - whereas any second hand car you buy to replace it is an unknown quantity.

I drive a 12 year old diesel car, I've just spent over £400 putting it through it's MOT but it's worth it to me because it's super reliable on long journeys. £400 for another year of trouble free motoring is worth it to me, even though the car itself is only worth £1k

drpet49 · 18/06/2021 17:29

Nissan Micra- the new one looks really smart

velveteencushion · 18/06/2021 17:33

@Grenlei I would probably do this but the bill comes to nearly £2k and I need to replace it drive in Birmingham emissions zone anyway.

inmyslippers · 18/06/2021 17:38

Sorry meant to say the Honda hrv the mini suv

Grenlei · 18/06/2021 17:42

@velveteencushion fair enough! A 4 figure bill would definitely be my limit too :)

I feel your pain with the Birmingham zone, I am just outside of the expanded ULEZ in Greater London, but I expect in another couple of years it will expand to my area and then I'll also be needing a new car. Hoping by then the range on electric cars will have improved and mote charging points!

IrishCream123 · 18/06/2021 17:46

Hyundai i10, fab little city car.

RandomMess · 18/06/2021 18:01

Suzuki Swift.

So roomy inside.

LtJudyHopps · 18/06/2021 18:11

I love my Ford Fiesta. The new ones tick all your boxes (hybrid, parking cameras for city parking, small but comfortably fit 4)
However to get that it would be more than £10k. You can lease a new one for under £200 a month though.
If not you can buy eco/boost versions for cheaper - probably 2016/2016 plates

Socksey · 18/06/2021 18:13

Skoda Citigo or Fabia
