My 18 year old Toyota Yaris, has finally, spectacularly failed it's MOT. It has been the best car ever, has never gone wrong, let me down or had any ££ spent on it and owes me nothing.

So I'm now in the market for a new vehicle. My requirements are:

  • Very compact for squeezing into city parking spaces.
  • 90% journeys are in city, may need to commute in future.
  • But can happily seat 4 for longer journeys (have a 2nd vehicle for big trips)
  • As eco-friendly as possible - would love electric but no off street parking, have been looking at hybrids.
  • 5 doors
  • really reliable
  • up to about £10000.

I've been looking at Yaris Hybrids but wondering what others I should look at.

Ford focus eco boost. Just got one and it's fabulous, small, parking sensors, sat Nov cheap on insurance and road tax. Fyi we are a family of 4 and it's big enough for us.

Honda Civic mk9. You’ll get a very low miles one for 10k. Nippy and good to drive around town but lovely for motorway as the cabin is well soundproofed, feels very smooth at 70. Extremely reliable too.

Hyundai i10, great car, great for parking, very nippy, turns on a sixpence.
£35 a month for me to fill up with petrol.

I agree, £30 road tax too.

Before you buy a hybrid, it’s worth checking out if anyone in you area has posted about having their catalytic converter stolen in your local Facebook group. Some areas are rife with it but others not so much. Having a cat lock fitted can help (although some still try and write off your car as they did in our case 😩).

GroggyLegs · 18/06/2021 18:41

I had a rental Hyundai i10 and it was so much fun! Not sure if it comes in a hybrid version but it's cheap and cheerful.

Me too, as a courtesy car! When it pulled up I was a bit 'WTF?!' but it was really solid tiny car and took 2 car seats no problem.

longcoffeebreak · 18/06/2021 18:46

I like a Hyundai i10 or how about a Kia Picanto

roses2 · 18/06/2021 18:46

I wouldn't go for hybrid purely because thefts of the catalytic converters are sky high

Sosigsandwich · 18/06/2021 19:32

I absolutely love my i10!

moonbedazzled · 18/06/2021 19:36

Mazda 2. So nippy. Roomy. Everyone who drives it, loves it. And passengers always say how comfy it is. Parks like a dream.

longcoffeebreak · 18/06/2021 20:09

Do people really steal catalytic converters Confused

MiddleClassProblem · 18/06/2021 20:13

Yes. Happen especially to us several times.

AnotherEmma · 18/06/2021 20:26

Toyota Yaris Hybrid. You should be able to get a used one for about £10k.

Hybrids are particularly popular with cat thieves because the cats tend to have been used less than on a petrol only engine
lastqueenofscotland · 18/06/2021 20:33

Polo? Never had a VWi didn’t love.

Grenlei · 18/06/2021 20:35

There's a massive problem with catalytic converter theft in the London area; I see at least 3-4 posts a week about it on social media just in our town. Rather despicably one of the hotspots for theft is hospital car parks 😡

MiddleClassProblem · 18/06/2021 20:38

Yes and they do it in broad daylight in busy car parks too.

I’m not sure why I wrote “especially” in my last post! Football and MN means I write god knows what.

Laaaaa · 18/06/2021 20:43

My Yaris was the best car ever. I still grieve for it. I wanted the 4 seater one but they didn't do it anynore

teddyclown · 18/06/2021 20:46

In February my trusty Ford Fiesta died after 14 years! I was so sorry to see it go.
My son has a VW UP which I liked the look of, so I got one too. We're now the UP family!
I really love it. So economical and easy to drive.

junebirthdaygirl · 18/06/2021 21:05

I love my Hyundai i20
Great car, easy on petrol, looks good.
That theft of converters is rife here in lreland too. Happened to my friend last week in a public carpark. Seems they are constantly watching and in and out very quickly.

MereDintofPandiculation · 18/06/2021 21:33

Sorry meant to say the Honda hrv the mini suv Do they still make that? DH used to have one, great car on road and off, but I thought they stopped making them at least 10 years ago. And gave the name to a completely different beast.

Sarjest · 18/06/2021 22:33

Another vote for a VW Up! Or a Citigo. They are surprisingly roomy but compact. Ours has been no trouble for six years.

flirtygirl · 18/06/2021 23:16

Ford b max ecoboost, 2018 - 2020 models with under 10k miles are available for £8- 10k.

I prefer a 1.4 petrol but the 1.0 ecoboost would suit your criteria.

velveteencushion · 19/06/2021 11:37

I love the Citi go / up but dh thinks they are too small. Interesting re hybrids and cc theft - had no idea. Looked into it further and think Yaris' are slightly harder to steal so not as targeted as auris and Prius - interested to know if this is true or not

@velveteencushion Has he sat in one or driven one? They are surprisingly more roomy than you'd imagine inside. My DH loved our Citigo.
