Swim/play in the river, you should not be surprised if they come down with a flu/cold the next day?

What a bonkers idea. Of course you can't catch a cold or flu from swimming in a river on a baking hot day Confused

Legoninjago1 · 17/06/2021 17:23

YABU. Unless he's got typhoid.

Toottooot · 17/06/2021 17:23

Can you catch The Covid from a river too? I have one next to my house and just wondered if The Covid particles can rise from the river into my house?

DeathStare · 17/06/2021 17:24

Mum was really surprised by it and couldn't work out why he had got ill. Maybe just me but I would have thought it was self explanatory

She's right. You're wrong.

ObviousNameChage · 17/06/2021 17:24

Tbh OP doesn't really deserve this much derision considering there are plenty of well educated people, including HCP's that fuss about cold weather, rain and even drafts . Oh and meningitis from going out with wet hair. She's in good (superstitious) company.

Waspsarearseholes · 17/06/2021 17:24

Good grief. There are probably hundreds of illnesses one could catch from wild swimming. A cold isn't one of them.

I'd never be surprised if my kids got a cold. Being in the river would be irrelevant obviously!
SupermanTonight · 17/06/2021 17:27

It’s the shit that’s release into them that you want to worry about...😬

Fortheloveofgodwhy · 17/06/2021 17:27

@ghostyslovesheets

also you wont get piles from siting on a step
what!!! years i was told that by the crazy lady who walked past the school bus stop... years Wink
IronTeeth · 17/06/2021 17:28

@ghostyslovesheets

also you wont get piles from siting on a step
and you can't get pregnant from a toilet seat
stuntfarter · 17/06/2021 17:28

Maybe typhoid , gastroenteritis or cholera rather than flu

iklboo · 17/06/2021 17:30

Eating crusts won't make your hair grow curly.

nanbread · 17/06/2021 17:31

Legionnaires or Weil's disease maybe more likely - although don't think you'd get that the next day?!

elfycat · 17/06/2021 17:31

You can't catch flu or colds from wild swimming. I never got ill going out in freezing weather with cold hair either.

But someone should mention Weil's disease at this point. Rat wee in waterways, and symptoms include fever, chills, headache, cough and all the rest. Symptoms can start from 2 days after infection, so if yesterday - nope, but if they were swimming on Tues it might be worth a call to 111.

tunainatin · 17/06/2021 17:31

I'm fascinated by this as logic tells me you don't get cold/flu from getting cold, swimming in rivers etc. However, experience, and my husband tell me the opposite!

elfycat · 17/06/2021 17:32

*wet hair

tunainatin · 17/06/2021 17:33

There is something about being physically cold making it easier for viruses to enter the body (I'm sure I saw or read something vaguely scientific about it)

Itsokthanks · 17/06/2021 17:34

I wouldn't be surprised if someone got I'll from swimming in a river but it's impossible to get a cold or flu from it.

Stichintime · 17/06/2021 17:36

Sure you could get something from a river, if you swallow the water and the waters not clean, but the flu? No.

niceupthedance · 17/06/2021 17:37

It's because they release sewage into them I guess, that can make you pretty ill.

shinynewapple21 · 17/06/2021 17:41

How old are the DC and is there supervision? I'd be more worried of risk of drowning .

CiaoForNiao · 17/06/2021 17:41

I spent half my childhood swimming in the river (well not literally half, but it was a regular occurrence.) My brothers hardly ever swam in the river, to be fair they probably would have drowned.

We had similar incidents of sickness including colds/flu. If anything I was sick less than them as a child.

viques · 17/06/2021 17:41

Didn’t David Williams come down with some horrendous bug after doing his Thames swim? When there is so much gunk from farms, factories and water boards being released into watercourses , not to mention what the GBP dumps I water, I wouldn’t want to paddle in a river let alone swim in one, and I did swim in rivers when I was younger, but the only thing I worried about then was if I was downstream from my aunties cows......

viques · 17/06/2021 17:43

Walliams, thank you speck check, I know what I am writing.

Blankspace101 · 17/06/2021 17:43

OP instead of coming on here and starting a thread in the hope that MN will state another woman’s pattering style, why don’t you go an do something more worthwhile with you life?
