Aibu-Prayer in Florida

I am British so is DH but we both live in the US (Florida) with our kids. DS is 14 and DD is 10 we are all non religious and prayer is never something that has come up. However, Ron Desantis (the governor) has now signed a law requiring all schools to have a 1-2 minute silence every day so students can pray if they want. They say if not religious they can just remain quiet. Aibu to be annoyed about this as it feels like DS and DD are being treated as less important that their religious students. Aibu?

@Posieandpip

So because your kids might not want to pray, NONE should be allowed to? That's just ... Too disgusting and unreasonable for words.
Is there any reason the children who want to pray can't pray at home?

You are being absolutely ridiculous.
Grow up!
Less important!!
I expect you're entitled enough for the family.

GrandDuchessRomanov · 26/06/2021 19:21

I'm confused about the implication of your kids being "less important" too.

How so?

I think it’s a nice idea - a bit weird to make it law, but if you’re not religious then just reflect or take in the piece and quiet. 2 mins of calm and quiet per day could do a lot of children a whole lot of good I think.

When my sister had kids (after she had moved to America) she said she would go with the flow (so always use American words for things) and not ‘other’ them (as she had been - as the ‘English’ kid in Scotland).

Your kids can do whatever they like in the 2 minutes. I never prayed at school. I was just quiet during the time others were.

Entitled enough for what family?

I don't see what's ridiculous about worrying about the religious right getting a foothold in schools. As seen by the critical race theory bill the other week.

At this juncture I think YABU given the kids have a choice, but as other posters have said this is highly likely to be the thin end of the wedge. Florida has a large electoral college and religion in school, is the wet dream of the hard right base.
