HELP I'm covered in nettle stings!

Cherrychocchip · 16/06/2021 19:26

Aibu to ask if anyone knows how to stop the pain?? I fell off my bike into a massive nettle bush 3 hours ago. Stupidly had short shorts and a vest on so the whole of my arse is stung badly, as is my back, back of both arms and clumps on legs. I actually had to lay in them for several minutes because I was on a slight hill with my bike on top of me and couldn't actually get up! The usual lumps and horrid feeling of being stung happened and I thought it would just go away but it's getting worse and worse. I can't bear it. My whole body is throbbing with like very painful pins and needles. I've tried vinegar, anti histamines, paracetamol. Oilatum cream and a bath so far. Not worked

My DD walked through some with Sandler's and shorts she was so upset but I put some E45 cream on and that helped a lot.
Hope it helps you..Sounds so painful!

HappyRaven · 16/06/2021 19:34

I have had a close encounter with nettles today as well, it wasn't too bad when it happened. My arms and face are worse.
Just need to wait for them to go.

Naggety · 16/06/2021 19:34

Any dock leaves nearby? They normally grow near nettles.

DancesWithDaffodils · 16/06/2021 19:36

Ouch.
Soap and water - a nice, cool, long, shower, and soap everywhere that got stung. Did you soap in the gath?
Paracetamol and antihistamines (like piriton) you've already done.
Can you see any of the hairs still on your skin? Get them 9ff with bluetac or sticky rape or similar if they are visible.

Hope you feel better soon.

Imasoulman · 16/06/2021 19:39

Vaseline, you need to stop air getting to the tiny hollow stingers that are stuck in your skin.
Stop the air getting to them and the pain will ease

purplecorkheart · 16/06/2021 19:40

Sudacream maybe? You have my sympathies.

StoneofDestiny · 16/06/2021 19:42

Calamine Lotion from the chemist.
Dock leaves to wipe across your skin.
Prosecco as you deserve it

whoami24601 · 16/06/2021 19:45

In my experience nothing works but time! I didn't get any sleep last night due to sticking my bare leg into a nettle bush (idiot!) But couldn't even feel them this morning. Patience is a virtue!

Speakuptomakeyourselfheard · 16/06/2021 19:51

Don't suppose you have an Aloe plant in the house or even better a tube of Aloe? If you have a plant, just break part of a leaf off, split it open and rub the juice where the stings are, it really helps in my experience.

gamerchick · 16/06/2021 19:53

You need some doc leaves. They grow near nettles. Get a load, scrunch them so they get juicy and rub it on the stings. If it's really bad, after rubbing. Bandage them on all the stings. The pain will stop.

elsaesmeralda · 16/06/2021 19:56

Sounds awful! I also suggest doc leaves if you can find some/send someone on a hunt for you

KillerFlamingo · 16/06/2021 19:57

Anthisan is brilliant, you can probably get some in a supermarket, good luck!

NeverDropYourMoonCup · 16/06/2021 19:58

More antihistamines, hydrocortisone cream and spend longer in a cool bath/shower, together with draping a wet towel over you when out of the bathroom.

See the pharmacist for more help.

queenMab99 · 16/06/2021 20:01

calamine lotion is very soothing and cooling for nettle stings. I often get them on my hands and arms when gardening, strangely I find they ease the rheumatoid arhtritis in my hands and wrists!

AFS1 · 16/06/2021 20:03

Ouch!
Anthisan is the answer. Smother yourself in anthisan cream.

Gilmoregale · 16/06/2021 20:04

Ouch! Great suggestions already, especially the dock leaves and the antihistamines (if you can take them); also, this might sound batty as heck, but it worked for me when I had an unexpected outbreak of hives a few years ago that made me want to scratch my skin off; get some baking soda and sprinkle it on your sheets to ease the itching and get some sleep. (You can also make it into a paste with a little water.)

(And remember, this too shall pass!!!)

Cherrychocchip · 16/06/2021 21:03

Right so I've tried the majority of those and it didn't help. The air thing is definitely a fact. My bum and legs are better than my arms as I'm sat on them! My arms after I has washed them again went 100 times worse when the air got to them when wet. I've wrapped them in clingfilm like you would a burn because that's what it feels like. Weirdly it's taken the edge off but not sure I'll be able to sleep like this! I just hope it goes away soon. I cannot believe the intense pain from a nettle bloody sting. Thanks so much for the answers.

Dock leaves - scrunch them a bit and rub it on.

Thisusedtobeaniceneighbourhood · 16/06/2021 21:06

You poor thing. I remember doing similar as a teenager (minus the bike, just a ridiculous fall from a wall we shouldn’t have been climbing over). I remember it being awful but I don’t know how long it lasted.

Triceratopsmama · 16/06/2021 21:15

You poor thing, I did the exact same thing when I was about 10. My mother plonked me in a cold bath and told me to stay there til it didn't hurt anymore. Took bloody hours

Beetrootisred · 16/06/2021 21:16

Clean the stung area with a flannel to dislodge any hairs that are stuck. Mix bicarbonate of soda and cold water, the colder the better. Gently smear over the area that hurts.

delilahbucket · 16/06/2021 21:20

Have you got any sudocrem in the house or can someone get some from a local shop? Hydrocortisone will also help but only available from a pharmacy.

Jumbojem · 16/06/2021 21:24

Was going to say anthisan but see several others already have.
My son fell down a steep bank covered in nettles whilst in shorts and t-shirt. His arm swelled up terribly as the stings were all so close together. Anthisan did the trick, but it did take 24 hrs for him to be pain free and the swelling go completely.

SpringBluebellWoods · 16/06/2021 21:28

Are you anywhere near the sea? Swimming in the sea solves my nettle stings. And I’ve learned to not do circular walks in shorts - it was 1 mile to the car through the nettles, or 8 miles back the other way. I was hot and tired and chose the nettles.

Lizzie523 · 16/06/2021 21:31

Awful OP I had this last week. Brushed against them and reacted too fast, grabbing what I thought were docking leaves. In fact I had just wrapped my hand around a load of them

Like you I tried anti histamines -& also hydrocortisone but made no difference.

A hot shower helped a bit but in the end I took strong painkillers and went to bed. felt fine the next day. Sounds like time might also be the answer for you sadly.
