Side hassles - over this being a thing

Ok

Is anyone else annoyed that everybody seems to think all hobbies have to be „Side hussles”? That you have to monetise every hobby rather than doing it because you like it and it helps you relax.

I think it’s a way to distract from the fact that companies no longer pay a living wage.

By getting everyone to spend time on multiple income streams (yes these are great if you have enough money to have rental income, investments etc etc) but for the vast majority of people they spend time, effort and money and get now where.....

I might just be in a bad mood but I think people need to have time to relax, spend time with family and friends and not be continually run into the ground

Or hustle Wink? If I could find something I was talented at I'd have one. Why wouldn't I want extra money?

Anonymous48 · 16/06/2021 18:21

I have never come across anyone who thinks that hobbies should be "side hussles".

Inthesameboatatmo · 16/06/2021 18:23

I'm not a grammar nazi but hussle's 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Justcallmebebes · 16/06/2021 18:23

I'm lost on this one. Can you give examples OP?

WorraLiberty · 16/06/2021 18:26

I don't think I've ever come across this?

I mean my SIL makes lots of craft stuff and I've heard people make throwaway comments such as, "Oooh you could make a living out of this".

But it's mostly just polite compliments, rather than anyone being particularly serious.

WallaceinAnderland · 16/06/2021 18:28

I don't think this was ever a thing. Do you mean a part time small business?

TiredSloth · 16/06/2021 18:29

By getting everyone to spend time on multiple income streams

Who exactly is getting everyone to spend time on multiple income streams? I don’t personally know anyone with a ‘side hussle’ (hustle)?

Snoken · 16/06/2021 18:32

I don’t think this is a thing. If anything, my hobbies cost me money, certainly doesn’t make me any.

Quite. Who are these people?
JaJaNein · 16/06/2021 18:38

I take it you mean body shop at home etc and the range of homemade tat on Facebook marketplace?

PassionfruitOrangeGuava · 16/06/2021 18:38

YABU to start an entire thread about side hustles and not spell it correctly once.

MedusasBadHairDay · 16/06/2021 18:44

I've heard of it happening, and know a few people who were encouraged to turn their hobby into a side hustle, and just ended up unhappy because of it. Or who found they were getting a lot of requests for commissions.

I don't think anyone is forced into it, but there can be an expectation that if you are good at something why wouldn't you monetise it?

Whenwillitmakesense · 16/06/2021 19:04

Sorry - my spelling today is atrocious. I have had some wine which is not helping and no edit function.

Anyway - was on SM (I know, I know) and everyone is showing ways to make money from monetising your hobby rather than just using it to relax. I think I have just snapped.

I think it’s great if you are good at something to get some money off it but it’s the expectation from these people that you have to try to make money off everything - you like knitting - don’t just do it when you want make XYZ etc

I agree - no edit function so can’t change it now

My side hustle should be showing people how not to post 🙈😂

Oh I thought it was a mispelling for tassles!
(I know mine keep flinging themselves off once I got them 'really whirling' Blush)

DysmalRadius · 16/06/2021 19:10

I think it's sometimes because those who craft end up with loads of the thing they make, especially once they have given everyone they know their produce. Selling them and taking commissions can be a nice way to provide inspiration and help them find homes for their creations.

I seem to know mostly people who are part of the gig economy, and those with multiple income streams were the ones that weren't completely fucked by covid.

For people who work non standard jobs, monetising their hobby is a great way to earn during their downtime.

I've never seen anyone try and force anyone else into it though - if your friends are doing that then you need better friends!!

ACPC · 16/06/2021 19:11

I completely agree op.

I have an additional way of making money - I mark exam papers. Although it’s definitely not a hobby I am monetising Grin

ACPC · 16/06/2021 19:13

Pressed too soon! Unless it's a proper business and you are actually skilled, then fair enough but charging people a fortune for tat is rife on SM. It can't be enjoyable for the people making it either.

PegasusReturns · 16/06/2021 19:14

It’s definitely a “thing”. It’s part of the “FIRE” parlance. Monetise everything, save what you can and spend very little and you too can be a millionaire.

There’s certainly some logics to it but most people are not making significant sums on their side hustles if indeed they’re even bothering at all!

SoupForLunch · 16/06/2021 21:30

This is a thing. I have a side hustle. I work in comms (as a p/t employee) and I do copywriting for extra income. It's a pain but I need the money. I wouldn't spend hours on decoupage greetings cards or embroidered hankies, then sell them online for a pittance (given time / resources) but I might enjoy doing those more. I think lots of people are trying to monetise those sorts of things at the moment but my side hustle is more an extension of what I do as a day job.

As a copywriter, I can tell you the world doesn't end when you spell a word wrong on Mumsnet. Planes don't fall from the sky. Hearts don't stop. Jesus. Give the woman a break.

elfycat · 16/06/2021 21:41

I took a MA full time and made a little money from selling vintage jewellery (Etsy) and esoteric supplies (another Etsy shop). Both were at hobby pace, find some supplies and list them between essays. They were on the side of full time study around school runs. What else were they? I intended to make money, just not as a priority. It was more a way of proving my hobby was sound.

Mreggsworth · 16/06/2021 23:04

Yes, my Facebook is full of side hustles such as mlms, 'coaching', selling sweet boxes, selling wax melts, social media managing. I guess theres nothing wrong with people trying to better themselves (apart from mlms) it's just all very samey.
