Side hassles - over this being a thing

Ok

Is anyone else annoyed that everybody seems to think all hobbies have to be „Side hussles”? That you have to monetise every hobby rather than doing it because you like it and it helps you relax.

I think it’s a way to distract from the fact that companies no longer pay a living wage.

By getting everyone to spend time on multiple income streams (yes these are great if you have enough money to have rental income, investments etc etc) but for the vast majority of people they spend time, effort and money and get now where.....

I might just be in a bad mood but I think people need to have time to relax, spend time with family and friends and not be continually run into the ground

Personally I hate the term "side hustle" as it reeks of MLM's. I enjoy interior design and spotting trends. I've turned this in to an Etsy shop and for the past six months I've made at least 1k in profits. It's really helped as my contract ended last November so it's been keeping money coming in. Plus it means I can spend time with my newborn.

@Inthesameboatatmo

I'm not a grammar nazi but hussle's 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Good job you’re not, with that extraneous apostrophe!

I think it depends - I had various side hustles while I worked full time and then when work stopped suiting me, I jacked it in without a second thought and now my businesses bring me full time income (photography, stationery, and a new joint venture). It was a shit tonne easier to build up from an existing business and reputation than it would have been to quit and start from scratch.

And my multiple things meant I wasn't totally fucked by covid - not eligible for any of the SEISS grants as I quit too recently and first couple of years were expensive.

Most of my friends have either a job and a side business or a business and a side business - multiple income streams are an actual thing and are very helpful in the real world of self employment.

I understand your frustration but just mute people on social media, honestly.

I know what you're saying Op, I do 3/4 different things as hobbies and I give away the things I make as I just enjoy the creative process. Not a humble brag but everyone who receives the items tells me to sell, I say no as it would suck the joy out of it, they tell me I'm a fucking fool as I could make a killing and it's a tidy little earner 🤔 Its bloody annoying.

Side business as a phrase, fine.
Side hustle - 🤮. It’s just so cringey.
I think I actually prefer side hussle, it’s less irritating! So you might have actually hit on your own Op, changing irritating phrases 🤣🤣
