To ask what's the easiest car to drive (collision avoidance features, etc)

NotJustACigar · 16/06/2021 15:52

Im looking for a car that has a good set of safety features that make it easy to drive. For example I find it quite difficult to judge the space around my car sometimes and when I drive through my neighbourhood there are a lot of cars that are parked halfway onto the pavement that I need to weave around. What safety features help with this?

Also looking for lane assistance, collision avoidance, 360 camera, parking assistance etc. And I would also prefer a hybrid. I've been digging around on car maker's websites and find the options and information quite confusing. So AIBU to ask for advice and information please. Do you have a car you love with features such as these? Thank you.

BloodyStupidJohnson Im with your OH. I have a Honda Jazz which I love except for the fact the bonnet slopes so much you cant see it when parking in a tight spot. Changing it for a SUV square type!

Jeep Cherokee - turns on a 5 p piece. Great visibility from the high driving position.

Onairjunkie · 16/06/2021 18:06

@araiwa

Taxi sounds best for you
😂
Onairjunkie · 16/06/2021 18:10

I’m really worried about the drivers who drive titchy cars but worry about the ‘sloping bonnets’ making it hard to park. 😩

I know people have been flippant about taxis and lessons but honestly, in some cases they don’t sound like a bad idea.

JustDanceAddict · 16/06/2021 18:12

Idk, but love my back sensors for reversing.

Lololol

Get an older car. Better visibility, better depth perception.

BiniorellaSun · 16/06/2021 18:15

I’m the same and have been driving for 26 years with no accidents bar one wing mirror.
I have an automatic Golf- nice and small with lots of beeps and reversing cameras.

Again, car recommendations only please, insults are not needed thanks.

Car manufacturers using design to aid manoeuvrability isn’t new. The reason the original Range Rover (released in 1969) had ‘crenellations’ along the bonnet (you can see them in the attached pic, the raised ridges running along the edges of the bonnet) was to help its drivers position and park it.

I have a car with sensors and totally ignore them. I had the same car for 13 years and learned exactly how long/wide it was- my parallel parking skills were impressive, maybe get the same car again so you learn to judge?

Summersun2020 · 16/06/2021 18:26

I HAAAATE the collision avoidance on my car. Hate. Randomly slams on if I’m approaching a bend quickly (country road etc, I’m driving perfectly safely), loud dramatic alarms going off etc. So annoying and honestly less safe than not having it IMO. The lane assist is useless too- I can stay in lane perfectly on my own, if there’s old lines or faded tarmac etc on the road sometimes the lane assist recognises this as road markings and tries to pull me across the road Confused

You don't get to tell people what to post especially as you choose to enter AIBU Grin

My suggestion if you need to rely on fallible aids to feel safe would be maybe ask for this to be moved to the actual cars topic. I've found that to be really helpful in the past

Onetraumaatatimeplease · 16/06/2021 18:26

I have a Renault captur. It's got sensors that beep whenever I get within 3 foot of anything. Sometimes they beep at nothing. The car has different beeps for almost everything. I personally find it distracting and annoying (apart from the speed camera beep, I like that).

AlandAnna · 16/06/2021 18:27

My Nissan Leaf feels super safe. It has a light that alerts you to cars in your blind spot on the motorway and all around sensors. Has pro pilot mode. Love it.

Summersun2020 · 16/06/2021 18:29

Oh yes agreed. My cars alerts me “warning! Rear traffic!” With a loud distracting beep if I’m stationary and a person walks behind my car 🙄

NotJustACigar · 16/06/2021 18:30

Good point @AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair I know you're right, it's just annoying as the only thing I've ever done was clip a wing mirror! I'm asking the question because I'm actually very safety conscious and it's not pleasant to be spoken to like I'm a menace to our roads. But the suggestions I've received are incredibly helpful so it has totally been worth posting. I just don't see why people feel the need to be nasty even though yes they often are on AIBU!

Definitely a Volvo. It's cameras are amazing like there's a satellite beaming a picture onto the big screen in front of you (so you see all around the car when you're parking), if you get too close to say a hedge when you're driving or something in front of you it starts beeping too and it has the lane assist thing, beams how fast you're going next to the speed limit on the windscreen in front of you.

And no one has died or been seriously injured in one since 2001 (apparently!!)

purpleraine · 16/06/2021 18:52

Volvo xc40, it has all of those things. I love it though I do find lots of the ‘helpful’ features you’ve mentioned annoying. You can switch most of them on and off.

Bluehasnoclue · 16/06/2021 18:55

SEAT Ateca, but it would have to be the most expensive version to get the 360 camera etc. Unsure if they have a hybrid version.

Agadorsparticus · 16/06/2021 18:58

I have the Hyundai Ioniq hybrid. It has a sensor and pushes the steering wheel if I go over the centre line on the road, I hate it. It also has all the sensors and rear camera for reverse parking.

Definitely Volvo. I have XC90 and has all above
Oblomov21 · 16/06/2021 19:02

My Hyundai iconiq hybrid has all you ask, only had it a couple of months, second hand, thrilled.

Oblomov21 · 16/06/2021 19:03

Sorry

hyundai ioniq hybrid

Same as Agador.

Still1nLove · 16/06/2021 19:13

I would suggest any car that has front and rear sensors. I used to drive a very small car, I have great depth perception but I was constantly hitting things with my wing mirrors. I recently bought a 7 seater with front and rear sensors and it has been a life changer
