Strongest sperm

Fangsalot89 · 16/06/2021 12:36

I just read an article about a woman who asked M&S to write “Glad you were the strongest sperm” on her daughters 18th birthday cake and the shop refusing.
Apparently she went onto social media to brand the company “snowflakes” and go in on them for not being able to take a joke, branding them “old fashioned” and commenting that they were unable to take a joke.
In response, M&S have apologised saying they should have gone ahead with the order and sent her flowers.
The rest of the article goes on to say about how she had to settle with a “bog standard” message and how the company should get with the times.

Thoughts?

I personally think she sounds like a knob trying to be a bit too cool with her kid and I hate the fact that Sparks buckled but that’s my opinion.
Don’t get me wrong, it is quite an amusing thing to say to your kid (I guess.) Its not offensive but I feel like the girl ended up with a better cake because of the shops refusal ☺️

I am disappointed that M and S gave in, they where right in the first place

Leaninghouse · 16/06/2021 12:48

I'm shocked at the people saying you're not unreasonable, surely it's up to her what she wants on her cake and not for M and S to judge. Sperm is just a fact of life

MadeOfStarStuff · 16/06/2021 12:49

I read this and thought regardless of the rights or wrongs of the cake, the mother sounds like a dick who’s desperate for attention/publicity. Definitely an “I’m a cool mom, not a regular mom” type

AutistGoth · 16/06/2021 12:50

Strongest sperm? What about "my choicest egg?" What about, "I'm glad I went through pregnancy, labour, breastfeeding and child rearing etc?" I'm not sure that I like the male getting all the credit here. It's odd how the person in question is accusing them of being old-fashioned when the celebration of the child's life being tothe credit of the father is almost pseudo Victorian.

As for M&S, I think that they were very dignified in their response. Both in the original refusal and the way they handled the subsequent complaint.

Rosewood017 · 16/06/2021 13:12

They should outline in their order process that some terms are not appropriate. I agree with PP, it's the sperm and egg's equal collaboration that should get credit! Egg sends out the signals, sperm follows them.

Not that funny a cake. I would have given a polite titter if I saw that presented to someone.

Whyhello · 16/06/2021 13:13

This is beyond distasteful, I don’t know why you’d expect somewhere as reputable as M&S to do this. Horrible, I’d die if my Mum did this.

Hopdathelf · 16/06/2021 13:37

What an attention seeker. There are lots of cake makers out there who would do that and more. Go to them.

Fangsalot89 · 16/06/2021 13:53

@Sirzy absolutely agree. I often get frustrated with companies suddenly back tracking to appease. Either do it and stand by it or don’t do it at all. Madness.

@MadeOfStarStuff She really did didn’t she! I mean, ultimately who cares? Go to someone else. Why has it got to be called out in such a vitriolic way on social media. Not everyone finds her sense of humour funny.

@AutistGoth Your assuming she breastfed

Unfortunately, the poor daughter has no doubt already been subjected to years of embarrassment from her mother. So although I applaud M&S for refusing, it was a futile gesture and ultimately they should have given the customer what they asked for. The message was cringeworthy but not obscene.

bananamonkey · 16/06/2021 13:55

I’d have died from embarrassment if my mum had put this on a cake for my 18th!

JackieTheFart · 16/06/2021 13:57

She sounds like an attention seeking dick head tbh. I mean, why didn’t she go the whole hog and ask for ‘I’m glad I didn’t swallow you’ or similar.

I don’t think M&S should have backed down and I certainly don’t think she should’ve been rewarded.

Retailers operate under the right to refuse service for whatever reason and I think they were within reason to.

FrankButchersDickieBow · 16/06/2021 13:58

Urgh. Like them baby babygro's that say horrible stuff like 'glad mummy never swallowed'.

Fangsalot89 · 16/06/2021 14:00

@JackieTheFart I think that one would have been mildly funnier if I’m honest ☺️

I'd hate if my mum bought that for me. It's a shame they buckled.

Lbnc2021 · 16/06/2021 14:00

Her daughter must be mortified having an embarrassment like that for a mother 🙈

0blio · 16/06/2021 14:01

That's disgusting and I'm really disappointed in M&S for backing down.

SleepingStandingUp · 16/06/2021 14:04

I mean sperm seems a weird thing to veto putting on an ADULTS cake so agree it's an awful thing to put on your kids cake

Moonmelodies · 16/06/2021 14:08

Why would anyone want sperm on a cake?

PurpleyBlue · 16/06/2021 14:13

Weird idea for a cake

AutistGoth · 16/06/2021 14:19
@AutistGoth Your assuming she breastfed
True. Yes, you're right.

I was just not happy with the male contribution being put on a pedestal and the actual mothering being ignored. In a general sense, rather than just this specific person.

Fangsalot89 · 16/06/2021 14:24

@AutistGoth I get what you are saying but I really don’t think that’s an issue here.

OP posts:
HopeYourHighHorseBucks · 16/06/2021 14:35

I find it trashy and not my sense of humour but I agree with her - ish. It isn't offensive, no swearing etc so I dont see the issue but I think she would have been better to go to an independent cake maker. M&S aren't going to put their name to something that whilst isn't outright offensive but tacky and not very.... M&S.
