1 year old baby I'm really worried

40yearoldmerging · 15/06/2021 20:50

Just asking for a bit of reassurance really.
Please don't make me feel worse I'm calling docs tomorrow.
Baby has been ill for a few days. Temp was 38 but now 37.4 so not too high. But skin feels hot to the touch still.
Refusing food, still breastfeeding but really lethargic and sleeping all day.

When I ring drs (assuming I can get an appointment) what realistically can they do?
I have older children and none of them have ever been this out of it unless they had diarrhea and vomiting, flu or chicken pox.
I don't know what to do but my Mommy Alarm is screaming something is wrong.
Initially I was thinking its just teething, but with my older ones they had a little temperature and cried more, never fell asleep all day or refused all food even ice cream or cold yoghurt or cold baby puree. Such a happy baby but he won't even smile.

Just take him to A&E, I’m a paramedic and have done a stint as a clinician in 111 and you may have to wait ages for a call back as it’s hugely busy at the moment (not with covid generally). Lethargy is a serious symptom and you don’t want to be hanging around. Make sure you take a charger and a change of clothes for both of you, nothing worse than sitting covered in vomit if he decides to throw up. Also make sure you take a drink/ something to eat for you especially as you’re breastfeeding. All the best.

Fundays12 · 15/06/2021 22:06

Please call 111. My middle child ended up in hospital for 5 days as a baby when he was unwell. I knew something was wrong even though it wasn't anything alarming such as a rash etc.

iwishiwasatree · 15/06/2021 22:08

Hope all is okay OP

RealhousewifeofStoke · 15/06/2021 22:11

Don’t delay. Get him assessed by a medical professional.

hopingforabrighterfuture2021 · 15/06/2021 22:13

Please get him checked. My child was, on one occasion, sent straight to A&E from the GP appointment I’d been about to cancel as I thought it was wasting their time, as he didn’t seem ‘too bad’. Straight on oxygen and admitted for three days with bronchilitus (not sure on spelling).

Megan2018 · 15/06/2021 22:16

111 usually send an ambulance for under 2’s as prt of standard protocol. It’s usually quicker to go straight to your nearest children’s a&e. I’d be doing that (and actually we did do that 2 weeks ago).

SunshineCake · 15/06/2021 22:20

I really hope you have called for help by now and baby is soon better.

SirVixofVixHall · 15/06/2021 22:25

I agree A and E.
Hope he is better soon OP.

@Vebrithien

Bronchiolitis, croup (we'd been told the previous week to just let him get in with it) and viral induced asthma.

He was a premature baby, and had had a cough for about 5 weeks. We had him checked twice in that time, and both times were told to just let him get over it ("not Covid, just a virus"). Only he couldn't get over it on his own. I was angry once he had been stabilised, that I'd not been taken seriously on the two previous occasions.

He's just tried to eat out of the food waste bin, so much better now Confused

My son had bronchiolitis and viral induced asthma and it was exactly the same story as yours - I took him to the GP and he sent me to A&E as it would be faster. 3 days on oxygen and fed with a tube. Petrifying. He's 13 now and doesn't seem to have suffered any long term lung damage, as we were warned - but he does start every day with a real smoker's cough... :-( Glad your boy is back to eating out of the bin.

OP, I hope you and your little one are getting the help you need. I once called 111 as my boy wasn't right and they sent paramedics out to us - he was ultimately fine and I felt really awful, but they couldn't have made it any clearer that they would far rather come out to a 'healthy' baby than one in crisis, so to always always call 111 if you have any concerns at all, and not to be afraid to take non-verbal kids into A&E because it's so hard to know yourself.

Mangofandangoo · 15/06/2021 22:34

Go to a&e. - my dd was hospitalised at age one for an ear infection, she had been similar to your ds but went down hill really quickly.

Doesn't hurt to get checked out

Anotherinternetmum · 15/06/2021 22:36

My daughter was the same and after taking her multiple times to hospital to be sent home. She was finally admitted in the end with septicaemia

1WayOrAnother2 · 15/06/2021 22:39

A baby you are worried about should be taken to A&E. Your 'instinct' is probably good (you watch your child all the time and pick up things you are not even aware of).

Adults go for silly things and often should know better but babies are different.

A&E staff won't think you are silly - even if you are wrong. (Many of them have babies too.)

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 15/06/2021 22:42

Definitely ring 111..if that gets you nowhere and you are still worried, A&E. Never ever worth the risk.

WhySoSensitive · 15/06/2021 22:52

I’ve rang 111 for less and been sent to a&e to be seen.
I wouldn’t be waiting.

tolerable · 15/06/2021 22:54

absolute a+e. always go with your gut.worse thing they'll do is send you home. you know your babe.let us know how get on.best wishes

Opinion4321 · 15/06/2021 22:59

Please trust your instincts and get him seen. Lethargy like that isn't right.

When my daughter was about 16 months old she wasn't right and had a cough. I took her to the GP at 4pm who basically told me to get a grip and that she was fine. I just didn't agree and felt something was wrong so took her to a&e at 7pm and she was put straight on oxygen and was admitted for 5 days. I truly believe in mothering instincts, please down ignore yours.

sbhydrogen · 15/06/2021 23:04

I would trust your instincts and take your DC to A&E. Always best to be sure, and you're the one who knows your child.

Mangomoonlight · 15/06/2021 23:08

I really hope everything is ok. Another vote here for 111.

My nearly 2 year old was like this last week- very high temp up and down, lethargic, off food, chesty and hideous cold. 111 were really reassuring and we got seen very quickly. It turned out to be an ear infection.

Sidesaladofchips · 15/06/2021 23:12

999 or direct to A&E ASAP. Please don't feel like you are wasting anyone's time. Little ones go off quickly.
Don't waste your time with 111 if he is lethargic, floppy, refusing food and not himself. Hope he will be OK.

greennailvarnish · 15/06/2021 23:13

A&E. Definitely a virus going around for children who were born in lockdown and have not been exposed to many people and thus have lower immunity than the norm. Since rules have eased and these bubs have been meeting more people, they are catching more bugs.
Please take your baby to A&E

olidora63 · 15/06/2021 23:15

My granddaughter has been spiking temps with a cough since March! I am. Registered Nurse and out of frustration have taken her to AE because GP wants to diagnose over the bloody phone ..GD has now had 3 courses of ABs and there is absolutely no continuity between her treatment..the NHS is a bloody shambles 😌

Anxietyandwine · 15/06/2021 23:15

My son was exactly the same last week and we called 111 and they sent an ambulance (he was ok and not admitted so don’t panic) but do give them a ring.

There paramedics said that they’re seeing lots of young children getting sick right now because we’re mixing more and passing germs they’ve not seen due to the distance and isolating etc over the last year or so.

I hope your little one is feeling better, it’s so hard.

(Also - Trust your mommy instinct, it saved my sons life when he was tiny when I refused to take him home from over a week in hospital and then the following day they found he had a nasty infection that was border line for sepsis by the time they found it!)
