1 year old baby I'm really worried

40yearoldmerging · 15/06/2021 20:50

Just asking for a bit of reassurance really.
Please don't make me feel worse I'm calling docs tomorrow.
Baby has been ill for a few days. Temp was 38 but now 37.4 so not too high. But skin feels hot to the touch still.
Refusing food, still breastfeeding but really lethargic and sleeping all day.

When I ring drs (assuming I can get an appointment) what realistically can they do?
I have older children and none of them have ever been this out of it unless they had diarrhea and vomiting, flu or chicken pox.
I don't know what to do but my Mommy Alarm is screaming something is wrong.
Initially I was thinking its just teething, but with my older ones they had a little temperature and cried more, never fell asleep all day or refused all food even ice cream or cold yoghurt or cold baby puree. Such a happy baby but he won't even smile.

  1. Lethargy is not a good thing. Not themselves- please call 111
MRex · 15/06/2021 21:14

Call 111, he needs to be checked over. I hope he gets better soon.

Tistheseason17 · 15/06/2021 21:15

FWIW- I think 111 will advise you to go to A&E so perhaps just go there.

Smallredclip · 15/06/2021 21:15

Please call 111

pigglepot · 15/06/2021 21:16

I wouldn't just be calling 111 I would be taking him to A&E

AbjectHorror · 15/06/2021 21:17

My almost 1yo was like this a month or so ago - really noticeably off. I rang 111 and the woman basically made me feel hysterical and told me DS was teething!

I knew he wasn't right at all. Drowsy, lethargic, colour totally off, clingy and crying, refusing solids (which normally he loves).

I went into the doctor's surgery and demanded someone see him as I kept getting fobbed off.

Turned out to be an ear infection and he needed antibiotics, but behaved very similarly to how you describe your LO, so could be a possibility. You know your baby. If you think something is off then get them seen however you can xx

Vebrithien · 15/06/2021 21:20

Bronchiolitis, croup (we'd been told the previous week to just let him get in with it) and viral induced asthma.

He was a premature baby, and had had a cough for about 5 weeks. We had him checked twice in that time, and both times were told to just let him get over it ("not Covid, just a virus"). Only he couldn't get over it on his own. I was angry once he had been stabilised, that I'd not been taken seriously on the two previous occasions.

He's just tried to eat out of the food waste bin, so much better now Confused

dopeyduck · 15/06/2021 21:21

I really think you need to call 111 and take medical advice ASAP.

Sirzy · 15/06/2021 21:25

With one so little it’s alway best to get them checked especially if lethargic.

moita · 15/06/2021 21:25

they weren't quite sure! but she got given anti biotics.

3anddone · 15/06/2021 21:26

I also wouldn’t be bothering with 111 and going straight to A n E. The lethargy is a concern, please listen to your instincts OP.

Hall84 · 15/06/2021 21:28

I'd second 111 or A&E. We ended up there last week and it turned out to be tonsillitis. I couldn't get her temperature down at home so was worried about a febrile convulsion. The staff were great and it's unlikely we would have been seen by the gp for what on the face of it was a snotty nose and high temperature.

Dugi3 · 15/06/2021 21:29

OP I'm writing this after crawling out of my ds room having tried to take his temp for the millionth time tonight, he is EXACTLY the same. I know there is something wrong and he has been so lethargic and dare I say it, well behaved all day! This is not like him at all, refused food, no smiles, just wants hugs and cuddles, disturbed sleep. I wonder if it is a virus doing the rounds

PurpleyBlue · 15/06/2021 21:33

Listen to mummy instinct. They won't think you've wasted their time if there's nothing majorly wrong. Please phone 111, they really don't mind

There really is.

GP's, A&E, 111 and urgent care are all being inundated by young children with similar viruses.
I know, I have to read through all the paragons!

3 children at DS' nursery are off with similar symptoms (all pending a PCR test at the moment to rule out Covid). I think DS has it as he's definitely a bit 'off' but not enough to be concerned about although I've booked him for Covid test tomorrow just in case. Nursery think it's a (non-Covid) virus doing the rounds
Bear65 · 15/06/2021 21:37

@PixieDust28

When your child isn't their self just like you've mentioned. Sleeping all day. Not interested in food. Please please do not wait until tomorrow.

Is he floppy? Is he sensitive to light? If any of these phone 999.

If you think you can wait for 111, do that but personally I'd take him down to A&E. you don't have to phone prior with children's A&E go straight down. They will have a good look at him. He might be admitted if he is dehydrated x

This every time. Trust your instincts. Wishing you both a peaceful night
PinkDaffodil2 · 15/06/2021 21:38

111, lethargy is a sign to get checked out. Listen to that uneasy feeling. If he picks up the doctors really won’t mind seeing him,and there’s a lot they can do, check heart rate etc (trainee GP)
Also keep breastfeeding, skin to skin, and consider arranging a covid test

tiredanddangerous · 15/06/2021 21:38

Mother's instinct is a thing op, trust it.

Cryalot2 · 15/06/2021 21:42

Get baby checked out . Then you will know for sure.
Hope all well , Brew

Gilly12345 · 15/06/2021 21:43

Phone 111.

KEG05 · 15/06/2021 21:45

If your mummy alarm is going off you DEFINITELY need to call 111 and get you little one seen tonight. It’s always better to be safe than sorry when it comes to our small people x

EilriafG · 15/06/2021 21:48

My 16 month old was like this a few weeks ago and it turned out to be a really bad bout of tonsillitis. I'd phone 111 just to be safe

DinosaurDiana · 15/06/2021 21:49

Don’t wait until tomorrow.

Mrsmadevans · 15/06/2021 21:52
