Hi all,

I’ve got to come up with a fact to round off a work meeting I’m presenting tomorrow. Have no idea what to go for - so AIBU to ask if you can give me any fact inspiration?!

The fact can be on anything at all. Please hit me with your fave facts (and if you can come up with a ‘story’-type fact, that would be amazing!)

Thanks!!

So @iklboo Wow.....

Removing someone’s fingertip or eye won’t fool a print or retina scanner. For fingertips, the skin pattern is clear when pulled taut by the rest of the skin. Fluid loss, after a few minutes, would shrink it beyond accurate repair. Equally, these scanners need the electrical impulse and radio frequencies from the body, so a detached limb wouldn’t work. In terms of retina, the machine measures shape - this is lost when the eye is removed, as is the movement (dilation and retraction), and the infrared signal isn’t processed the same way, so entry is denied.

As a result, facilities where they use this technology (I know, as my office has an element of retina scan entry) have signs informing you of this in likely break in spots, and inform employees who can speak out if taken hostage, to try and avoid any nasty incidents.

There isn't a word that rhymes with orsnge

Cleopatra lived closer in time to the moon landing than to the construction of the great pyramids.

There isn't a word that rhymes with orsnge

Why would anyone assume there would be?

Regarding words that rhyme with orange, on the other hand, I refer you to the opening couplet of Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel's "Mad, Mad Moonlight":

Facetious is the only word in the English language with all the vowels in alphabetical order.

Is abstemious not a word, then?

ClashCityRocker · 15/06/2021 08:30

There are, according to QI several words that rhyme with orange. They're just not in common usage. Gorange is one if I recall correctly, although I have no idea of what it means.

Squirrels can survive terminal velocity which means if you wanted to kill a squirrel by dropping it from a great height, it would have to fall 4,600 miles in order to give it time to starve to death.

Venus: a day is longer than a year. Also it spins backwards
Neptune: tilted so much so that it literally rolls around the sun

Polar bear liver: so high in vitamin A humans can't eat it

Wombats: have square shaped poo

Every breath you take contains molecules that were in the last breath that Julius Caesar took.
And the water you drink has be drunk (and peed out) by dinosaurs and other living creatures before and since

If your parents didn’t have children, then you won’t have children either.

custardbear · 15/06/2021 13:15

@Biffbaff

Octopuses have three hearts

When Paul McCartney wrote the song 'Yesterday' he had the tune but not the lyrics so it was originally music set to the words 'scrambled eggs'.

Another fact lol ...The plural of octopus is octopodes

@Doingtheboxerbeat

Looking forward to watching the Emu wars 🤗.

No idea if this is true (blame the school of YouTube) but apparently predators eyes face forward and prey animals eyes are to the side 👀.

And therefore Muppets are predators and not prey 😂
