Hi all,

I’ve got to come up with a fact to round off a work meeting I’m presenting tomorrow. Have no idea what to go for - so AIBU to ask if you can give me any fact inspiration?!

The fact can be on anything at all. Please hit me with your fave facts (and if you can come up with a ‘story’-type fact, that would be amazing!)

Thanks!!

@CaptainThe95thRifles that can't possibly be right or it would be better have your heart removed in case you have a heart attack in space.

HeavenHotel · 15/06/2021 00:01

Haha just wasted half an hour learning about The Emu Wars! Thanks :)

HeavenHotel · 15/06/2021 00:03

Already, current NASA policy recommends that astronauts have a number of non-essential body parts, such as appendix and wisdom teeth, removed before heading into space. ... Current space missions carry only a small risk of heart attack, he says, but that will change in the next few years.

WTF!

You gotta love Mnet!

Non essential body parts! Hahahah

awaketoosoon · 15/06/2021 00:05

In case you need an appendectomy. It's an avoidable disaster!

I googled and apparently it's a myth. They are discussing it for longer missions like Mars but getting back from ISS is apparently not a big problem & they have antibiotics.

Uh, you know you can't live without your heart, right?!

awaketoosoon · 15/06/2021 00:08

But apparently if you are going to Antarctica & are a doctor spending the winter there you do!

awaketoosoon · 15/06/2021 00:10

On Twitter Tim Peake said it's not advised but individual choice.

SkiingIsHeaven · 15/06/2021 00:11

@CaptainThe95thRifles obviously.

I am saying that it would be ridiculous to take bits of your body out just in case.

I picked the heart to make my point because it would be the stupidest thing to remove.

Doingtheboxerbeat · 15/06/2021 00:19

Looking forward to watching the Emu wars 🤗.

No idea if this is true (blame the school of YouTube) but apparently predators eyes face forward and prey animals eyes are to the side 👀.

Well, you're entitled to your opinion, but it's a school of thought. As posters have said, it's not required for the ISS because that's actually very easy to get back from, but for deep space flights, as with very rural parts of the world, it's a reasonable precaution.

You can't make a point with a logical fallacy, by the way.

Womencanlift · 15/06/2021 00:25

Wharf (as in Canary Wharf) is not a word but an acronym - stands for WareHouse At River Front

Love threads like this!

If you push your tongue on the roof of your mouth, while eating cold food then it stops brain freeze

Also helps stop sneezes, crying and mild hiccups!

One that blew my mind on an existential thread - everyone who has ever lived is still here on earth in some form. Made me wonder with all the waste we produce how much bigger the earth is than it was in say 1100?

Tbf the original fact was You can't go into space if you still have your appendix which isn't true.

tallredhead1 · 15/06/2021 00:35

@TheLittleRedToothbrush

Oooh I got one that really impressed me ! If You hold your arms out stretched straight to the side and measure this it's the same as your height! Fact
I am 6ft 1 but 6ft 6 with my arms stretched out, they thought I might have had marfins when I was a child but I don't just talk with very long arms

Ants can live for up to 30 years.

In 1990 we knew of only one planet beyond our own solar system. Now we have discovered over four thousand.

No, it isn't, and no it doesn't, any more than chav = Council House And Violent.

Old English wirh Germanic toots in the one case and Romany in the other.

theThreeofWeevils · 15/06/2021 00:58

Oh ffs. Germanic ROOTS. Presumably a Germanic toot is what happens if you cut up a Volkswagen.

Spencer Perceval is the only British PM to have been assassinated. Shot by a man who'd been imprisoned in Russia and felt he was due compensation for this from the British govt.

If a giraffe drank a cup of coffee it would be cold before it reached its stomach.

If you lick a badgers anus it tastes like raspberry.

Squirrel monkeys have a unique "finger" print in the end of their tail.

If you lick a badgers anus it tastes like raspberry.

Would love to know who discovered this and how they informed people of their discovery.

'Oh I was taking a midnight stroll in the woods and had a sudden urge to rim a badger. Summer berry flavour in case you're wondering'

Grin Just to clarify I saw it on TV. I have not been rimming badgers. Or anyone/anything for that matter!
Womencanlift · 15/06/2021 01:16

@theThreeofWeevils well shoot me down why don’t you!

I had heard that from a couple of friends who spent summers working for those open top bus tours in London, different companies. That was in their script

One of them also shared the meaning of hangover which I won’t share here as no doubt will be told that’s wrong too
