Wedding hair make up trial awful... help!!

headinhands2021 · 13/06/2021 23:19

AIBU to send a really negative email to my wedding hair and make up lady?
And - please help me draft it!

I know today was hot but the finished make up was shiny immediately and foundation had pooled in my pores - she said this is where I have dry patches but I actually think my skin is generally ok and I have been having facials to get ready for wedding so I think maybe the product just didn't suit me. Her technique when applying products under my eyes felt literally like she was jabbing me and I can't let her loose on my mum who is also having her hair and make up done on the wedding day. (Mum is elderly and I think k she may literally cry...!) It hurt so much that my eyes were watering and her way of getting them to stop was to poke some of the skin where apparently my tear duct is, as that would make them stop (it didn't work!)
Lots more I could say but the nail in the coffin for me is that the eyeliner flick was in totally the wrong place on both eyes. I kind of feel like eyeliner is one of the things that make up artists should be good at?! And one of the reasons I want my make up done on the day.
Final note - she is not cheap!

Help - AIBU?
YABU = being fussy, get over it.
YANBU = need to give some frank feedback or find a new MUA. Mumsnetters are great at drafting responses so any help appreciated!

Thanks!

This sounds terrible. You need to find another makeup artist. She doesn't sound like she has a clue what she is doing.

Bagelsandbrie · 13/06/2021 23:21

Give feedback and look for someone else or practice doing your own make up. Loads of good you tube videos out there with tips and advice.

(Ex make up consultant).

Poptart4 · 13/06/2021 23:24

YANBU get another make up artist.

Elouera · 13/06/2021 23:27

Find someone else. Sounds terrible! Did you see pics of their previous work? How did you find them initially?

RogueMNerHidesUnderBigHat · 13/06/2021 23:31

Hi

Thanks for what you did today, but the look isn't what I was after for my wedding so I won't be going ahead with the booking.

Best wishes

It was so hard to find someone so she was a recommendation from a recommendation from a recommendation.....! She has had some good gigs in the past at magazines etc apparently but I just can't imagine people enjoying the jabby eye stab technique....! My eyes are still sore now

So simple and so true.... I think I'm a wimp... also I'm worried I won't find anyone else as it was so hard to find someone in the first place Confused

Just

Hi

Thanks for the session today.

It’s not the right look for me on this occasion so I won’t be going ahead with the wedding booking

All best etc

JackieTheFart · 13/06/2021 23:41

Well, this is what a trial is for?

Let her know the look wasn’t right for what you’re after and that her technique was a little stabby Grin

(Don’t say stabby, I just can’t bring to mind the word I want...)

MuddlingAlong1234 · 13/06/2021 23:42

What a crappy experience for you!!
My poor friend had a trial set up and then the artist decided not to turn up.
She luckily found someone else.
So stressful for you when your trying to get a feel for your wedding day look!!
But definitely find someone else! Facebook can be quite handy to just search the business pages for artists near your location.
Good luck!! ☺️☺️

Rainallnight · 13/06/2021 23:44

Do change. You don’t want that on your wedding day. It’s such a big, potentially stressful day, the last thing you want is to be worried about how the make up’s going to go.

My brother got married a few months before Covid and the hair and make up ladies we’re amazing. (Family and bridesmaids got make up done too). My mum was dying - and very fussy! - and they were just wonderful with her, and it made the whole experience so great.

ChrissyPlummer · 13/06/2021 23:45

Ask on FB, there are loads of people asking this all the time on mine and my town has loads of beauticians/hairdressers. When my friend got married, she went into MAC, had a makeover, liked it and tapped up the girl who did it and just paid her to do the whole bridal party. Would something like that be an option? I appreciate it’s harder now with COVID.

Whereabouts are you?

fourandnomore · 13/06/2021 23:49

Loads of people to choose from especially if you do a shout out, don’t settle. I know far too many people who have scrubbed it off and done it themselves.

MsHedgehog · 14/06/2021 00:00

Where are you based? For recommendations!

Demelza82 · 14/06/2021 01:16

YAnBU - there are too many great MUAs out there in need of work for you to waste your time and money who seems to blame their own bad technique on you and your skin.

Aquamarine1029 · 14/06/2021 04:25

You'd be crazy to use her on your wedding day.

londonscalling · 14/06/2021 04:39

Don't worry about not finding someone else. Realistically, if it was so awful, you'd be better doing it yourself!

readingismycardio · 14/06/2021 04:42

Don't worry about, send feedback and just get someone else. Make sure you see her work on brides! Magazine make-up is different from bridal make-up, find someone who does weddings

readingismycardio · 14/06/2021 04:43

About it*

ViaRia · 14/06/2021 07:51

I thought the point of having a make up trial was to see whether or not you wanted to hire that artist on the day…?

If that’s the case then no firmly written email is needed - just find a new make up artist.

Having said that, you will need to let this person know that you don’t intend to hire her on the day and so you can include some diplomatic feedback about whatever aspects you did not like. You’re not asking anything if her now, but I think she would benefit longer term to understand why some of her clients don’t continue with the booking.

A strongly worded complaint / feedback would not help either of you and you may just cause friction and give yourself more frustrations.

I like this. Polite, direct and clear
WhatAWasteOfOranges · 14/06/2021 08:13

If anywhere near london/ Surrey really recommend Eloise Parker. She’s fantastic...lots of work on her Instagram. She’s never hurt me!

BikeRunSki · 14/06/2021 08:14

I hated my wedding make up trial
(Ironically my married name is the same as that of an infamous make rock singer with a female name, who is known for his gothic make up 🤣).

I did my own. DSis did DM. My “best woman” did her own. It wasn’t a particularly formal wedding.

sunflowerdaisies · 14/06/2021 08:15

I had an awful make up trial, I wrote a similar message to above to say I wasn't booking. I then spent the money on decent make up, watched a few YouTube tutorials and did my own. Was a million times better!

BikeRunSki · 14/06/2021 08:15

Anyway, posted to soon. Send a short and sweet “thanks but no thanks” message, as per examples given above. This is why it’s a trial!
