What puts you off buying a house?

Other than structural things or location- which can't be changed, what are the seemingly little things that would put you off buying a house?
For me, seeing tumble dryer or vacuum in a random room screams not enough space/ storage. As well as loads of bathroom clutter.

AIBU to dismiss houses based on things like this?

Looking to sell soon so looking to avoid those mistakes!

Japanese knotweed

brizzlewizzle · 12/06/2021 20:41

Oh and woodchip

Blossomtoes · 12/06/2021 20:42
@Blossomtoes - for me I don’t like the fitted wardrobes which go over and above the bed or those with panels of mirrors. So many houses seem to have fitted wardrobes which are too big for the room and leave little room to get down the sides of the bed.
I don’t like those either but capacious fitted wardrobes that swallow loads of stuff and help keep the place tidy - bring it on!

Parker231 · 12/06/2021 20:42

I hate these in the en-suite or downstairs cloakroom- I know it could be changed but more work then to do.

What puts you off buying a house?
cardibach · 12/06/2021 20:43

Generally pictures of it not looking nice and tidy - yesterday I was looking at one and the tables and surfaces were covered in rubbish and you could see a pack of tobacco on the table
Are you afraid they won’t take all their belongings with them, @PattyPan?
Caring how the current owners do their housekeeping seems mad.

StoneofDestiny · 12/06/2021 20:44

Houses with weeping willow trees nearby - the roots!

This.

Some of the answers are absurd, clutter should not put you off.

There is a house here you can see their wardrobe leaves about 15 cm between it and bed😳

SarahAndQuack · 12/06/2021 20:46
@SarahAndQuack How do you read it?! If it would put you off buying it then it would mean you wouldn't buy it!? That's what that means - there's no other interpretation. "I was put off buying that house because it has no driveway" means "I didn't buy that house because it has no driveway". The word "buy" is in the title of the thread!
How strange, I wonder if this is one of those weird ones where it's local variation?

To me, 'what puts you off' is a phrase that means 'what makes you feel less keen'.

Buying a house is a long process; some people are talking about the things you see on rightmove that put them off. Obviously if you're buying, you have to make a decision about how easily you can afford to be put off. But if you're selling, you want everyone to want to buy your house at every stage, so you want to fix even the tinest thing that might put someone off, even a little bit, so they choose your house and not someone else's. I think?

PotassiumChloride · 12/06/2021 20:46

The neighbouring houses being in a bad state.

Pets, particularly cats.

Stillgoings · 12/06/2021 20:46

No windows in kitchens or bathrooms..no downstairs loo.

DavidTheDog · 12/06/2021 20:46

they are complete barriers if you don’t have the money or capacity to do a lot of refurbishments though. Some people need to move into something that’s not going to take a lot of work so want to avoid anything that seems like there’s a risk of hidden issues.

Ok, I've always thought that a house is such a long term investment that some cleaning and cosmetic requirements would actually make a house more affordable.

CallMeCleo · 12/06/2021 20:46

I'd never buy one of those houses that has only one bathroom and that's through the kitchen. Imagine waking in the night and needing a pee and having to go downstairs and through the kitchen to have one!

Nothappyland · 12/06/2021 20:47

Ah, I see RE: the UPVC - you all hate the type I have 😂 my house was built in early 2000s so looks ‘new-buildy’ and I think the white windows suit it. And agree with a PP saying I don’t have to think about them at all, easy to wipe down and clean, and easy to open and close. All I want from a window tbf! Though my parents put in the wooden-looking ones in their last house to replace the rotten wood ones and they did look nice.

Zari29 · 12/06/2021 20:47

Tiny mosaic tiles in the bathroom or horrid colors like green, blue and no windows. Cluttered bathrooms.
Kitchen with countertop filled with clutter - indicates too little space. Carpets besides bedrooms. Not enough light all round

CallMeCleo · 12/06/2021 20:48

I would not buy a house with a well used bus stop right outside, most especially if I had no front garden. People would sit on my window sill and chatter and smoke. It would be awful.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 12/06/2021 20:49

You all made me want to browse primelocation now😂

HeyGirlHeyBoy · 12/06/2021 20:51

This thread has made me laugh too. Something I remember, 11 years later, is viewing a decent (4 bed detached) house and in the en suite (why are these grim?) the toilet seat was up... And there was a poo in there Envy boak! I can still see it. Put me off completely Grin

LightasaBreeze · 12/06/2021 20:53

Houses that were built years ago and were quite luxurious but because of traffic nowadays have a constant stream of traffic outside them, usually because of traffic lights at junctions. Every time you come out of your house must be a pita and difficult for deliveries and constant exhaust fumes

CharityDingle · 12/06/2021 20:53

Anything that will lead to me being on here drawing diagrams about neighbours monopolising my driveway... Grin

EpitomeofAnOldBattle · 12/06/2021 20:53

I can easily imagine the furniture and mess ripped out. A smell of smoke or animal pee would put me off though as that's hard to get rid of.

Any of the following would give me pause or I would at least have to consider the cost and inconvenience of ripping them out... and I would feel bad about ripping out a newish kitchen for example so I might avoid it.
Paved garden
Plastic windows
Conservatory
Kardean or laminate floors
Carpet anywhere except bedrooms
Gloss kitchens
Spotlights
Spotlights in the plinth of kitchens - why, just why???
Any fitted furniture that is gloss, mirrored, laminate or foil wrapped mdf

Layout wise - bathrooms without windows, lack of storage, and any cupboards being advertised as bedrooms piss me right off

TheRebelle · 12/06/2021 20:54

If something is obviously worn out and should’ve been replaced years ago, tells me they didn’t want to spend money on the house so they may have ignored bigger problems too.

Echobelly · 12/06/2021 20:57

Weird layouts, like bedrooms coming off other bedrooms (I have seen that), rooms with funny angled walls etc
Tiny kitchens
Low ceilings (that's about 90% of newbuilds out)
Insufficient storage
'Bedrooms' that aren't even big enough to get a single bed in with any other furniture

im2sad · 12/06/2021 20:58

We renovate houses so I can look past most things however downstairs bathrooms are a no go as I don't want the hassle of trying to squeeze it upstairs. Untidy, loud neighbours.
I normally jump straight to the floor plan, if I can't see the potential in that I won't bother viewing.

LondonLife3 · 12/06/2021 20:59

Shared driveways
Anything that could cause parking issues

House wise - fitted bedroom furniture. I viewed a house once where the whole 2nd bed room was wardrobes I would have been barley able to fit a desk in the room!!
