What puts you off buying a house?

Other than structural things or location- which can't be changed, what are the seemingly little things that would put you off buying a house?
For me, seeing tumble dryer or vacuum in a random room screams not enough space/ storage. As well as loads of bathroom clutter.

AIBU to dismiss houses based on things like this?

Looking to sell soon so looking to avoid those mistakes!

Some of the things people fuss over are hilarious! Why do people care what furniture someone has, you'll change it anyway when you move in?!

I really only look at the big stuff... location, not being on a busy road or too close to a train line, ease of parking, light, living space, storage space, no evidence of things that will be an expensive PITA to fix (like a knackered conservatory, electric showers, signs of damp, mould or subsidence).

I ignore everything else like dated and ugly decor because that is all easy to change!

I think the more open and least cluttered you can make your house look, the better though. Loads of clutter does make me think "they don't have enough space to put things and that's why there is shit everywhere". Which isn't always true (some people are just messy!), but that's the impression I'm left with. And it wouldn't put me off, but making your house smell nice helps!

Icanhearyoubutiwont · 14/06/2021 20:48

oh and no bath, or tiny bathroom that can't fit a bath!

StoneofDestiny · 14/06/2021 20:54

Is it mn thing to dislike ensuites?

I thought it is practically a must that a master bedroom has an ensuite. I would not know any higher spec house that does not have a master bedroom ensuite. I thought it is a desirable thing.

I think some Mumsnetters have experience of windowless tiny en-suites close to the bed.

I'd consider it essential to have one. Fortunately ours is very large with Bath and shower and accessed through the dressing room - so nowhere near the bed. It's a bathroom that's private to us. Our main guest room is the same, but without the Bath. Just great for visitors.

I agree that en-suites can be great and yours sounds ideal. There are so many small 4 beds being built with a ridiculous number of bathrooms/toilets for the size. I guess it gives people a feeling of grandeur but I’d prefer bigger bedrooms rather than a house full of toilets and showers.

TheSunShinesBright · 14/06/2021 21:11

..and tiny bedrooms

fashionablefennel · 14/06/2021 21:12

A desirable house is big enough to have several bathrooms. The guest room needs an en-suite, with a loo in it, master bedrooms don't.

Most of us live in a private homes, not B&Bs, it's fine to walk a few steps to go to the bathroom Grin.

Even worse than en-suites are en-suite with toilets in them!
Who wants to have a loo attached to their bedroom, and.. why?!? It's gross. Only smaller properties with a complete lack of space need toilets in the bathroom.

ronswansonstache · 14/06/2021 21:13

WCs with no sink/ washbasin. I've come across this surprisingly often!

No porch I.e. the front door opens straight into the living room

PattyPan · 14/06/2021 21:24

Given it's MN I thought that the aversion for en suites was a hygiene thing, loo being too close to bed?

Essexgirlupnorth · 14/06/2021 21:26

Lack of parking
No bath

Pylon in front garden there was one house up for sale when we bought ours fairly modern new build cheaper than others around drove past it to find had a pylon basically in the front garden.

Did look at a room in a house to rent that had a shower cubical in the middle of the bedroom. That was a no.

Hyperion100 · 14/06/2021 21:29

Basketball hoop in the garden

In my case it's predominantly because in many houses they are just such a bad use of space. And shoddy thin wall inbetween it and room sometimes
Blossomtoes · 14/06/2021 21:34

Yup. Little new builds with en-suites and nowhere to keep the hoover and ironing board.

Or room for any kind of storage furniture whatsoever! Lots of toilets though!

Exactly. Even older houses often have issue with storage, so using a perfectly good 1.5-2m2 for a shower and another toilet is... Not smart. Friend had a house form, I think early 2000, late 1995+? The ensuit (had a window though) was honestly like this ___ | © | |• \ |®_|

Shower, tiny sink in the middle, toilet. Sooo tiny. Would absolutely be perfect if she had more storage because room had 2 standard size build in wardrobes (not big) and bed. Nothing else would fit

SchrodingersImmigrant · 14/06/2021 21:47

Too much spece next to ®- toilet! It was just as the shower (which was the smaller size)

You do realise MNers are 100 000+ individual people, and not a 'mass', do you ?

I thought it is practically a must that a master bedroom has an ensuite. I would not know any higher spec house that does not have a master bedroom ensuite. I thought it is a desirable thing.

It might well be to you, but that doesn't mean it is for everyone.

As others have said, lots of newbuild houses squeeze tiny en-suites in to loads of bedrooms leaving no space in the bedroom for things like wardrobes. It makes no sense at all.
Plus, when one of dh or I are getting up and going out early and the other is lying in, the one getting up pops their things into the bathroom the night before and slips out of the bedroom quietly. Far more disruptive to have someone getting ready in an en-suite.
Plus, occasionally, for various reasons, other people use our bathroom. It creates no issue as we built the bathroom with a door on to the landing, and no-one has to interrupt us in our bedroom to use the extra bathroom.

YouokHun · 14/06/2021 23:25

I’ve thought of another thing that wouldn’t just put me off a bit but is an absolutely no based on experience: weatherboarding. There’s a lot of it in Kent and Sussex and to a lesser extent in Essex.

I’ve spent the last 17 years trying to maintain old painted weatherboard and it’s cost me tens of thousands - run a mile from an old weatherboarded house, that’s my advice!

Biffbaff · 14/06/2021 23:50

I don't mind one en suite but I hate the trend for lots of en suites. It's the thought of all the cleaning that gets me! Plus, room space is useful! Is ripping them out bad? I think I would have to.

Popcornbetty · 16/06/2021 21:44

I love ensuites! It would be a turn off for me if a large-ish house didn’t have at least one on the master bedroom. I also like a downstairs loo.

Notebooksarefabulous · 16/06/2021 22:45

The neighbours mostly

Neighbours who have parties a lot
Neighbours who play music all day long and until 2am
Neighbours with kids that screech in the garden for hours
Neighbours who smoke

In the house itself - ensuite bathrooms. ridiculously tiny sinks, dishwashers - all of which I would remove asap so that would be an extra cost.

PattyPan · 16/06/2021 23:20

Tiny sinks or more accurately tiny taps are a huge pet peeve of mine. Who the hell designs sinks where you can barely fit your hand under the spout and why is this so common?

I kind of stalked my future streer, bit even I wouldn't know this. How do you fimd that out

Popcornbetty · 17/06/2021 14:19

@PattyPan I'm with you there, hate tiny kitchen sinks as well. Give me a large country kitchen sink anyday (one you can actually bath your baby in!)

Yes you won't find this out until you have already bought the house.

I'm so intrigued by the comments of fitted wardrobes because I love built in storage! We're actually renovating and putting some in haha! Does anybody mind sharing the reasons against this? I'm super curious (and we still have time to change)
