Too hot for a nightie?

Zig27 · 12/06/2021 09:03

I slept with a 2 tog duvet and a nightie last night but have woke up feeling hot. I don’t know if it’s a health issue or I shouldn’t be wearing a nightie in the summer. My body can get cold at first when I sleep so I like something on but hate waking up hot.

Use a sheet or empty duvet cover if you're too warm. Depending on your age could it be hot flushes?
We are using a 4.5 tog duvet and I got up at some point last night and put an extra single duvet on my side but it turned out DH had left the bedroom window open! (South of England).

NcagainNC · 12/06/2021 10:00

How are we meant to know if you have a health issue? It’s been hot. Of course we’re all going to say just take your nightie off at night in the summer...when it’s hot at night

GladAllOver · 12/06/2021 10:02

What's the next MN topic I wonder?

My nose is itching.
Should I sneeze = YABU. Not sneeze = YANBU

InnaBun · 12/06/2021 10:04

You might have a health issue but personally I'd wait until it's got cooler then you can see if it's hot flushes

Kittykat93 · 12/06/2021 10:04

I honestly cant fathom how a grown ass woman cant make a decision to take a nightie /duvet off when feeling too hot. If your room is 23 degrees, of course it's not a medical issue causing you to feel warm- it's because the room is warm!

WeatherwaxOn · 12/06/2021 10:07

It's warm at night.
Cotton sheets, window open, sleep naked.
I ditched the duvet several weeks ago.

Bellbottomstovetop · 12/06/2021 10:08

To be fair to the OP, I'd imagine that if they have posted on an Internet forum to ask a seemingly obvious question, it might be something they've never encountered before. Hence the asking. And if its a new issue, they might then assume it is a health issue.

I started getting hot flushes at night a couple of years ago without ever being hot at night before. So it can happen.

Crimblecrumble1990 · 12/06/2021 10:10

Is this the first time it has ever happened to you and that's why you're questioning it?

As to most people this would happen every single year in the summer time. Solution would be - less nightclothes, just sleeping under a sheet, fan in the room.

Quite amazing if you have got to adulthood and not felt hot before at night time? I think that's why you are getting some baffled responses, they are certainly not trolls.

ProfessorInkling · 12/06/2021 10:13

If you think you have a health issue, MN is not the place for consultation.

DotsandCo · 12/06/2021 10:23

@Zig27

Thanks for those who have made some helpful suggestions. I don’t know why the passive aggressive trolls make comments on here if they don’t help. I genuinely wanted to make sure I didn’t have a health issue. The solution is remove some layers and cool the room down.

OP...honestly, asking 'I'm too hot what should I do?' and then accusing people of being 'passive aggressive trolls' for telling you DIRECTLY to take some layers off (which is the exact opposite of being either passive aggressive or if trolling 🤦‍♀️) is quite a very bizarre response 🤣

It's mid-summer, the temperature is HOT, we are all finding it hard to sleep, so if you're hot on a hot night, chances are, it's because it's hot 🤷‍♀️

Last night WAS hot, and tonight is probably going to be hotter still, so sadly, your options are rather limited. You are obviously doing the right sort of things, like getting down to a 2-tog duvet and keeping your curtains closed during the day, but you could go a bit further by opening your windows as wide as possible once the sun gets off them, to get some cooler air in.

Reducing the weight of your bedding further will also help. Others have suggested using just the quilt cover on its own, or you could go even further and replace the quilt cover with just a flat cotton sheet, as DH and I have been doing for the past week or so. Admittedly, it feels a bit strange at first after spending much of the past nine months under a duvet, but the end effect is worth it.

Finally that nightie! Lots of posters have recommended not wearing anything in bed, so is it really necessary in this heat? Again, if you haven't tried sleeping in the nude before, it might feel strange for the first few nights, but for many the habit has persisted long after the weather changed. After all, many Mumsnetters admit to sleeping nude all the year round, not just in hot weather, so you would be in good company.

QuestionableMouse · 12/06/2021 22:22

I sleep naked year round. It's much more comfortable.

Where did you get your duvet from? I'm on the hunt for a lighter one but can only find polyester which I don't want.

Somethingsnappy · 12/06/2021 22:50

According to the instructions that always come with my babies' sleeping bags, at 23 degrees, one should be wearing a short sleeves single layer with a 1/1.5 tog sleeping bag. Any hotter and a sheet will do.

That's the best I can do.

MournfulTromboneNoise · 12/06/2021 22:55

Are we missing something?

If you're on a ward with 5 others I'd definitely keep the nightwear on - for example.

Serin · 12/06/2021 23:36

TB causes night sweats.

Slimmingstar · 12/06/2021 23:42

I never wear anything - even in the depths of winter……

Zig27 · 13/06/2021 01:27

@QuinionsRainbow Thanks for your helpful reply. I’m sleeping nude tonight as it is way too hot.

@Somethingsnappy That’s helpful advice about the warning for baby’s sleepwear as it will apply to adults. Thank you.

Are you really worried that feeling warm in warm weather might be a health issue?

I struggle with polyester and bought a 2 tog cotton duvet from John Lewis last year. I could only see the 4.5 tog on the website so it’s worth looking as I might be typing in the wrong thing.

It’s all sorted now. I started struggling with the heat 3 years ago. It makes sense add layers in winter and remove layers in summer.

Place a pillow at the bottom of the bed so as to raise the sheet off of the mattress,it creates a tunnel for air.

Kittykat93 · 13/06/2021 06:59

This thread is bonkers

WettyHainthrop · 13/06/2021 07:16

To be honest, I wondered if the OP might be the troll, as they’re going on about sleeping ‘in the nude’ and inciting others to share what they do Confused

Unhomme · 13/06/2021 09:03

I can imagine the sequel in November:

"It's cold in my bedroom as I wear a nightie. Is it a health issue or should I use a duvet, and close the window.
