To worry that something else is going on re DS illness

I've posted here a couple of times recently as my DS has been poorly. He got croup last week and ended up in hospital as he needed the dose of steroids. They sent him home and said he should be fine within a week. That was ten days ago. Since then he's still had this barking cough, not eating his food (maybe eats one meal a day whereas he normally never stops eating and has been quite grizzly) no temperatures or anything though.
Then today he had his normal 1 nap this morning but seemed really tired after lunch so I decided to put him down for another. He got up at 2pm and since then has been barely able to keep his eyes open, only wants to lie down, won't eat or drink anything, has a temperature and is as pale as a ghost. Spoke to the gp over the phone who said it's probably that he is tired from the cough so has given him some steroids but I'm still worried. Would he really develop another temp and have gone really off in the space of a few hours when he's had the bug since last Monday? Or am I being unreasonable to not just take the drs word for it?

Could this be sepsis- coming from a chest infection. I don't like the sound of it, OP

TinaYouFatLard · 11/06/2021 17:46

I wouldn’t be happy with a telephone appointment for this situation.

SassyPants · 11/06/2021 17:47

Medical professional needs to set eyes on him immediately, phone isn't sufficient.

thismummylovescake · 11/06/2021 17:48

That's what I'm worrying about that nobody saw him. They did see him yesterday as I took him in so they could check his cough as it still hadn't gone, they checked his chest and said it sounded clear and then did a really quick check on his throat but he was wriggling so they couldn't see anything.
But this afternoon he has been completely different, it's worried me how quickly he has gone down hill so I would have liked a dr to see him

www.nhs.uk/conditions/sepsis/
Contact NHS 111 it says

thismummylovescake · 11/06/2021 17:50

Thank you for that link. Ive just given him his first dose of steroids so im not sure wether to wait an hour or so just to see if they make a difference before I call or to call straight away?

Preexisting infection
High temp
Difficult to rouse
Not eating or drinking
Looks unwell.
All red flags. A and E would rather you overreacted and brought him in.

Ok thanks, will give 111 a call now as you can't just walk in to our a&e at the moment

I would call straight away.

Hawkmoth · 11/06/2021 17:53

I wouldn't wait. Even if he's better by the time you get seen it's minor embarrassment which is... a lot better than the alternative.

itsgettingwierd · 11/06/2021 17:53

For a child that age with already having been hospitalised and the sudden onset of deterioration you need to return to a and e.

They will then decide if he needs to be re admitted.

It's entirely possible the lack of eating etc has had an effect and they need to get nutrients in him via an IV.

sparepantsandtoothbrush · 11/06/2021 18:01

Is he drinking at least? He might need some IV fluids. But then I'm not a doctor! You're doing the right thing calling 111. As a previous poster said, I'd rather the embarrassment of them running around laughing after an hour of being watched than take a risk.

I hope he feels better soon

bloodywhitecat · 11/06/2021 18:05

Good luck OP, I hope he's OK.

JustDanceAddict · 11/06/2021 18:06

Agree with others. Take him in.
Good luck.

DramaAlpaca · 11/06/2021 18:08

I agree with everyone else, he needs to be seen.

Trying2310 · 11/06/2021 18:11

Little ones can deteriorate very quickly even if they seemed well a couple of hours ago. Definitely get him seen tonight for peace of mind. Hope all is well

Awarsewolf · 11/06/2021 18:45

Yes the tricky thing with young children is they cope magnificently with illness until it overwhelms their immune systems and they just crash out. There is no harm in going big here - he’s already been in hospital so you have prior justification for feeling that his path to recovery isn’t going as planned

Miaowse · 11/06/2021 19:34

How high is the temperature? Are his hands or feet cold? I would definitely call 111. Here’s the sepsis info

Mistyplanet · 11/06/2021 20:30

Just call 111 and i think they will arrange for you to be seen straight away at A and E. Or if hes really bad just drive straight there with someone in the car. That doesnt sound normal at all. I used to go to A and E alot with my son who had asthma when he had breathing difficulties. Sometimes he wasnt too bad and we'd be sent away again other times he stayed in. But i knew Id done my best for him and hes only got you who can help him. Better to be safe than sorry. Nothing to lose by taking him in x

P999 · 11/06/2021 21:10

Please dont take any chances. Just go to a and e Flowers

Miaowse · 12/06/2021 11:04

How’s your little one today?

Anythingelseintheboxpandora · 12/06/2021 11:11

Hope he’s a little better today it’s really scary when they’re so unwell

sherrystrull · 12/06/2021 11:14

Hope he's ok. Just read your post from last night and instantly agreed that he must be seen.

thismummylovescake · 12/06/2021 11:15

He was given some new medicine last night and seems to be much better today x
