You gave the baby a McFlurry?!

Parent was eating a McFlurry ice cream and gave 5 month old baby a couple of spoonfuls...

YABU - WTF?! He's only 5 months old. His digestive system isn't ready for sugar-rich ice cream! Cue upset tummy and exploding nappy.

YANBU - Get a grip, it's a million degrees at the moment and it was just a couple of spoonfuls. No harm done.

My 1 year old tried some wasabi flavoured ice cream (🤢) last week and loved it. He wanted more so be careful, op, ice cream is literally the work of the devil and basically the same as crack.

QuestionableMouse · 11/06/2021 14:13

@ShinyGreenElephant

Those machines are absolutely filthy, the reason they're never working is because they're such a pain in the arse to clean. You're recommended not to have any soft serve ice cream when pregnant due to the bacteria so I definitely wouldn't give that to a tiny baby. Normal ice cream maybe but I'd wait until a bit older personally even just for a taste
That's absolute rubbish. They're not filthy. They're cleaned very regularly.

Pisses me off when people spread absolute rubbish like this.

Nohugstoday25 · 11/06/2021 14:13

This threat is crazy, probably a tiny amount.
Also why the whole drama over dog betting ice cream ( mine loves a bit of ice cream 😂)

MrsKoala · 11/06/2021 14:16

When ds1 was about 4 weeks old H took him out while I slept. When they returned I asked where they'd been H said a cafe and laughingly told me ds1 loved lemon cheesecake. As he was laughing I assumed an obvious joke so laughed along saying 'oh yes I bet he did and maybe we should buy some for him at home' etc. H was chuckling and saying yeah, he really went crazy for it, then it became gradually apparent H wasn't actually joking. My face dropped and I said 'you aren't serious are you?' and he looked a bit confused and said 'yeah, what's wrong with that - it's dairy'. Confused

I recall a hot summer day my baby was 4-5 months we out walking she hungry. Sat in a park to feed her, there was an ice cream can I sent my husband over to get me one while I feeding. No sooner had I started eating the ice cream when she sat up and started licking it. No nappy problems I still tell her the first food she tried was ice cream. I remember it fondly happy times so I would say enjoy the little things bit ice cream no big deal.

cupsofcoffee · 11/06/2021 14:19

@Annasgirl

Well I will raise you one OP. I have a puppy who I spoil. But I would never, ever let her eat ice-cream.

Last week DH, DD2 and I went to a famous ice cream place near us for a treat of 99’s. The girl in front of us bought a 99 and a small tub of the ice cream. A few minutes later we sat at the pier to eat the 99s and we saw the girl (in her 20’s, not a child) give her dog the ice cream in the tub😱😱😱😱

What's wrong with the dog having ice-cream?

Mine loves a vanilla or strawberry ice-cream Grin

@LadyPoison

It is interesting that severe food allergies seem to have increased since weaning was delayed.

There were no restrictions on what foods could be taken into school when my two were young as there were no pupils with life threatening allergies. Now it seems that they are common enough for all manner of foodstuffs to be routinely banned in schools.

6 months is a recent guideline. I would not be the least surprised if in 10 years time it's back to 4 months as the fashion changes and new experts need to make a name for themselves.

Have they?

Or did everyone with severe allergies just used to die in infancy?

I have to laugh at this. Recent?

It's been 20 years since the WHO recommended breastfeeding only for 6 months and 18 years since it was adopted by the UK!

TakeYourFinalPosition · 11/06/2021 14:30

@SoreNSad

It’s not advised to have things like 99s or McFlurrys when pregnant as Listeria is a big risk.

Really? My midwife said ice cream was fine. The NHS website says they are too. Nobody has told me to avoid the ice cream man... just to make sure anything I eat is pasteurised Confused

fashionablefennel · 11/06/2021 14:33

If you start giving McFlurry at 5 months, you can imagine the state of the diet fed to that poor kid from now on.

It really is depressing.

WrongWayApricot · 11/06/2021 14:35

It's not about it being a mcflurry for me, it's that weaning before 6 months has been linked to increased risk of intolerances and allergies. I would feel bad if my kid had a lifelong issue because I couldn't wait another month to give them ice cream.

Livpool · 11/06/2021 14:37

I couldn't get excited about this. If there is a poonami the parent who fed the baby that can deal with it though

MorriseysGladioli · 11/06/2021 14:38

Weaning ages change all the time, and here we all are, alive, regardless.
I can't get worked up about it.

WithANameLikeDaniCalifornia · 11/06/2021 14:39

Oopsie I should have just given my son McFlurrys. Or nothing. Obviously starvation is better than formula milk.

There was no need to bring formula feeding into the conversation. I read and researched the ingredients on the back of the formula and cried and felt like I was failing my baby at the time.
Formula posters; stop with the “gosh I didn’t mean it like that”

other experts say weaning before 6 months helps avoid food allergies. Pick your expert basically.
bakingdemon · 11/06/2021 14:43

YABU. Absolutely no way a kid that tiny should have anything with that much sugar in it. We don't let our 2.5yo have ice cream.

If you want to give your baby something cooling try ice cubes or a lolly made from breast milk.

Inastatus · 11/06/2021 14:44

YANBU OP. It was a tiny bit of ice cream! Tell your friend to mind her own business.

fashionablefennel · 11/06/2021 14:44

sadly some experts recommend waiting for 6 months mainly to avoid people feeding crap to their kids too young...

But I am loving that someone is comparing feeding McDonald with feeing formula 😂. MN at its best.

@fashionablefennel

Oh FFS, give me a break and stop judging! 🙄

My DS has been solely formula fed (for medical reasons, I cannot breast feed) until 5 months. Our HV said it was OK to gradually start weaning now. We have given him a little bit of fruit and veg to start him off.. plus that teeny bit of ice cream which was a ONE-OFF TREAT for mum. I honestly can't remember the last time I had one. Probably 3+ years ago. It's not like I am going to make a habit of giving ice cream or other junk food to my son.. in fact, I am making all his food myself rather than buying the pots/jars/sachets from the supermarket.

Don't be so judgemental!

OP posts:
Serpenta · 11/06/2021 14:45

do people really make breast milk ice lollies?

Is that a thing I've missed? Grin

NameyNameyNameChangey · 11/06/2021 14:45

NI'd honestly think it's not my business.
What people feed their kids is not my business. If they wean them early- not my business.

Cowbells · 11/06/2021 14:48

I remember my DC having his first ever ice cream(Mr Whippy from a van on the beach) aged 13 months. A complete stranger stormed up to me and harangued me about how unhealthy it was and he would get food poisoning. I said he was enjoying it (he was.) Amazingly, he lived, he's slim, he eats very healthily and now an adult. I still occasionally treat him to a sugar rush on holidays. People love to catastrophise.

Annasgirl · 11/06/2021 14:51

To all of you who gave out to me re the dog comment - I didn't know a dog could have ice cream!!! Now my precious first dog (Ddog to us!!!) will have to get some. I hope no one puts a post about me on MNSmile.

Thanks for the info.

CoronaBanana · 11/06/2021 14:51

A couple of licks? Meh.

Ooh I bet he loved it, did he OP? 🤗

KurtWilde · 11/06/2021 14:52

All mine had had a taste of Mr Whippy at 5 or 6 months. No harm done.
