You gave the baby a McFlurry?!

Parent was eating a McFlurry ice cream and gave 5 month old baby a couple of spoonfuls...

YABU - WTF?! He's only 5 months old. His digestive system isn't ready for sugar-rich ice cream! Cue upset tummy and exploding nappy.

YANBU - Get a grip, it's a million degrees at the moment and it was just a couple of spoonfuls. No harm done.

@RoomOfRequirement

I'm not sure how the breastfeeding only brigade managed to turn this into an attack on formula, but alas, they've done it again.

Grow up.

This!

I formula feed through medical necessity so unless you want me to starve my baby…

I find it ridiculous that someone likened a McFlurry to the ingredients in formula milk. We have just started weaning and I wouldn’t dream of giving him anything like that…I wouldn’t criticise those who did with babies who were old enough but for me it’s important to give him fresh and healthy food wherever possible. We’ve always been a family who cook from scratch everyday and I want my son to really have a love of food and cooking like me and his dad, so although I am not adverse to the odd treat, we’ll be holding out as long as we can while he gets used to the food we make.

OddsNSodsBitsNBobs · 11/06/2021 13:38

I'm with you OP on this, it was also obvious it was you who fed your baby seeing as that was the YANBU! Your baby would have only swallowed a tiny , tiny amount of icecream, ok officially it's a food and a sugary one but very milky like. No harm done and I cant see an issue doing it again within reason.

FuckyouCovid21 · 11/06/2021 13:46

You are definitely not unreasonable for giving him a taste of ice cream. You definitely are unreasonable for calling him little man...he's not a man, he's a baby*

*I'm sure I'll get pasted for this comment but I don't care!

LadyPoison · 11/06/2021 13:47

Weaning age in the US and most of Europe is 4 months. The UK is in a definite minority with advising 6 months.

I wouldn't be that bothered if a 5 month old had a taste of ice cream - although I would choose a better quality one.

legotruck · 11/06/2021 13:50

How is this a reverse?

Parent (me) gives a couple of little spoonfuls of ice cream to 5 month old (my DS).

It's a reverse becaue you didn't have the (me) (my DS) in the OP. It wasn't obvious it was you at all and most people up until you clarified it was you assumed you were either judging another parent or angry at your own parents for giving grandchild ice cream.

I'm asking if people think I was being unreasonable, not whether or not my friends comment was unreasonable.

Well the 2 go hand in hand IMO. You were not BU but the only reason you thought you were was because of your friends U comment.

MarjorieBouvier · 11/06/2021 13:50

Meh, couldn't get worked up about ice cream. I don't think I would have with no.1, but no.3 had a whole mini milk to himself at 7 months ish.

I would be careful with soft serve though. I had awful sickness after an oreo sundae at a restaurant a few years ago.

SoreNSad · 11/06/2021 13:51

Mr Whippy-style machines are prone to harbouring bacteria unless rigorously cleaned and sterilised (which hardly ever happens). It’s not advised to have things like 99s or McFlurrys when pregnant as Listeria is a big risk. Based on that knowledge I would never give a baby something like that (and I’m not adverse to treats or sugar for children in moderation). Therefore YABU.

ChubbyLittleManInACampervan · 11/06/2021 13:52

Haha, this reminds me when I gave a friend’s baby (about 1 1/2 at the time) a chip, in a restaurant

My friend never forgave me for giving her baby junk food

I had just come to the U.K., and this was a new friend and I had not yet understood quite how much people here fear junk food (yet eat it all the time Grin)

I have by now learned my lesson!

PizzaCrust · 11/06/2021 13:52

I’ve skipped through the thread as I’ve saw a comment discussing formula shaming and I haven’t got the energy to read that trite today.

I don’t think the original post in question was unreasonable but a couple of spoons of ice cream 6 months plus on a warm day isn’t a big deal IMO. I’ve had two kids. One was 6 months in the summer, so she tried ice cream earlier. My other baby didn’t try ice cream until she was a year old as she turned 6 months over the winter period. They both have a couple of small spoons on a hot day if we are having one. Nothing wrong with that.

Everything in moderation as long as it’s after the minimum recommended weaning times.

Sceptre86 · 11/06/2021 13:53

I wouldn't mind tbh unless there was an allergy issue.

viques · 11/06/2021 13:53

@MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously

Hang on, wtf is wrong with baby rice? This is a standard thing to feed a weaning baby, or at least it was when mine were little. They are all fine btw - no one died from the horror of being given perfectly normal baby food!
It’s funny isn’t it how all these babies fed on baby rice and Heinz chocolate pudding from a jar (my favourite, one for you, and one for mummy) are all walking around fit and healthy , with functioning guts and immune systems.

( Whereas the baby weaned no sugar babies often seem to have food allergies that require entire school systems to be sterilised before they can set foot inside) ok, exaggeration, allergies aren’t funny, I get it, but there’s a grain of truth in there if you care to needle it out.)

ProbablyGryffindor · 11/06/2021 13:57

@Ponoka7

For me it would depend on if the baby is bf or bottle fed. Baby milk has cow's milk and sweeteners in. A small amount of ice-cream isn't that far off. If the baby is bf then the nappy explosion might indicate a dairy sensitivity. The point is that it isn't needed and wasn't going to cool the baby down. They say hold off until six months, but there's a grey area in the research from five months. If it's the other parent, then they get a say, anyone else, then it's a no.
Well done for making me nearly feel crap for feeding my baby formula.

You didn’t, because your post is such a load of shit. Wow, a small amount of ice cream is basically the same as formula? Think before you write such crap. A Mum, who is struggling to breastfeed, might choose to not give formula to her baby as a result of your post, and baby could become very unwell through not being fed and getting milk. Idiot.

Mistlewoeandwhine · 11/06/2021 13:59

You read about babies in earlier centuries being raised on bread dipped in wine. So…meh…

Mistlewoeandwhine · 11/06/2021 14:00

The hospital fed me (born full term at 9lbs) on Complan. Just because I cried more often than every 4 hours.

LadyPoison · 11/06/2021 14:00

It is interesting that severe food allergies seem to have increased since weaning was delayed.

There were no restrictions on what foods could be taken into school when my two were young as there were no pupils with life threatening allergies. Now it seems that they are common enough for all manner of foodstuffs to be routinely banned in schools.

6 months is a recent guideline. I would not be the least surprised if in 10 years time it's back to 4 months as the fashion changes and new experts need to make a name for themselves.

hellskittens · 11/06/2021 14:00

My 6 month old grandson would have loved it.

Toddlerteaplease · 11/06/2021 14:01

We feed as much ice cream to our post op cleft lip and palate babies as we can get down them. Though they are in the process of being weaned.

Ijustcametosayhello · 11/06/2021 14:01

@Thewiseoneincognito

I’ve seen worse!

A very ‘glamorous, over dressed’ young group of mums pushing these huge elaborate white prams around a department store in my town who had given their toddlers red bulls and monster drinks.

I couldn’t believe my eyes.

That's awful 😢
LilQueenie · 11/06/2021 14:01

a little taste won't hurt besides which its their business not yours or ours.

Nonmaquillee · 11/06/2021 14:04

I don't understand why some parents are so ignorant about this guideline - it's six months, and has been for years.

I agree with pp - you couldn't pay me to eat that crap myself never mind give it to a tiny baby.

sqirrelfriends · 11/06/2021 14:04

Nope, babies shouldn't be eating anything at 5m and definitely shouldn't have sugar.

Imo, the longer they wait the better your chances of them not being fussy eaters with a sweet tooth. I was quite strict and weaned DS on veg and he still loves it at almost 3.

shinynewapple21 · 11/06/2021 14:05

Well OP I'm glad I checked your updates before posting ! I was going to comment that I imagined you had one PFB and would be embarrassed at your reaction in a few years time !! Of course it's fine . Preferred ages for weaning / appropriate foods come and go. Weaning was at 4 months when I had my DS and I'm sure would have been allowed a lick of ice cream at 5 months . He had quite a sweet tooth as a young child . Never touches deserts or chocolate now .

fashionablefennel · 11/06/2021 14:06

it's awful, but when you see how many parents feed their toddlers with crisps and coke.. (oh, but it's diet coke, it's healthy!), you despair.
It's only gonna be worst for that kid let's be honest.

Posieandpip · 11/06/2021 14:09

@aliensprig

I saw a parent feeding her four month old a magnum. Aside from the various weaning fails, who wastes a magnum on a baby?!
100% sinful waste of a magnum, totally agree
sqirrelfriends · 11/06/2021 14:09

@ProbablyGryffindor I dont think it was meant like that.

Formula (and breast milk) are both very sweet as babies use sugar as their main carbohydrate to grow. I may be wrong but I think only the low lactose formulas have added refined sugar or corn syrup.
