You gave the baby a McFlurry?!

Parent was eating a McFlurry ice cream and gave 5 month old baby a couple of spoonfuls...

YABU - WTF?! He's only 5 months old. His digestive system isn't ready for sugar-rich ice cream! Cue upset tummy and exploding nappy.

YANBU - Get a grip, it's a million degrees at the moment and it was just a couple of spoonfuls. No harm done.

Yanbu he’s too young to be eating that especially if your partner knows you don’t want him to have sweet things just yet.

Whyhello · 11/06/2021 11:31

At 5 months they shouldn’t even be having food but if they do, it should be fruit and vegetables. I wouldn’t even give my 10 month old a McFlurry.

VettiyaIruken · 11/06/2021 11:31

Bit of both.
Possible poonami and the person who gave the ice-cream can have the honour of dealing with it.

No lasting damage from a couple of baby sized bites.

aliensprig · 11/06/2021 11:33

I saw a parent feeding her four month old a magnum. Aside from the various weaning fails, who wastes a magnum on a baby?!

Ilovemaisie · 11/06/2021 11:33

Your baby? Or someone else's? My baby was a titchy little thing so looked younger than she was. She could have easily been mistaken for a 5 month old when she was about 9 or 10 months. Can't remember if I gave her a lick of ice-cream back them but it's a high possiblity I did.

Zari29 · 11/06/2021 11:33

I would be pretty furious. You don't feed someone else's baby that young. We only started solids at 6 months so this would have been a massive issue for me.

ClaudiaWankleman · 11/06/2021 11:34

I really doubt it was even a couple of spoonfuls, with the amount that was likely to be lost around the mouth or from not being able to swallow (especially if it was a shock that it was cold!). It's maybe not the more health conscious or sensible thing to do, but it's really not something to get worked up about on the rare occasion.

ClaudiaWankleman · 11/06/2021 11:35

Read the OP. Parent... gave 5 month old baby

namechange30455 · 11/06/2021 11:36

Who was the person who fed the baby? Whose baby?

Not something I'd do myself and would be cross if someone did it to my baby, but I don't think I'd be so shocked if someone else did it to their own baby that I'd make a fuss...

Ponoka7 · 11/06/2021 11:36

For me it would depend on if the baby is bf or bottle fed. Baby milk has cow's milk and sweeteners in. A small amount of ice-cream isn't that far off. If the baby is bf then the nappy explosion might indicate a dairy sensitivity. The point is that it isn't needed and wasn't going to cool the baby down. They say hold off until six months, but there's a grey area in the research from five months. If it's the other parent, then they get a say, anyone else, then it's a no.

VettiyaIruken · 11/06/2021 11:36

OP , when you said parent gave the baby a lick, did you mean parent of the baby or parent as in
grandparent?

💯
Ponoka7 · 11/06/2021 11:37

Just seen it was the parent, it's fine. Totally up to them.

Mumdiva99 · 11/06/2021 11:39

This reminds me of the time I sent my OH to the shops with our LO to get them their first ice lolly....so they would have been over a year because I was very strict!!! I was thinking maybe a mini milk....he came back with a full size magnum for him!! My child ate what he ate and is none the worse off for it!

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 11/06/2021 11:39

Good idea? No
End of the world? No. (Unless the baby is known to be intolerant to dairy)
Likely consequences? Nothing

DH gave our DD a lock of chocolate from a chocolate fountain at that age. Only thing that happened was a stain down the front of her dress from where she spat it out. I doubt the baby actually swallowed much.

Inthesameboatatmo · 11/06/2021 11:41

Not the end of the world .
But at 5 months the baby will be teething so some cool ice cream wont hurt them at all and would have cooled their gums .

SlateCoaster · 11/06/2021 11:41

It was one of the child's parents that gave him the ice cream.

Up to the parent. They can deal with the nappy and possibly should have run it past the other parent so they could discuss their weaning strategy

Isanyholeagoal · 11/06/2021 11:48

I’ve given my 6month old a few spoons of a McFlurry, he loves it. No I’ll effects. Not something I would do often though, he usually has fruit and veg

AteAllTheBourbons · 11/06/2021 11:48

Mixed results because the vote is confusing I imagine

Ozanj · 11/06/2021 11:52

The ingrediants in a McFlurry or a MacDonalds Happy Meal are much more natural than those found in the vast majority of baby food; and tastes less sweet too. People need to think before they criticise.

Slankets · 11/06/2021 11:56

I really don't see how 2 mouthfuls of mcflurry is going to any damage what so ever to a baby Confused obviously engage common sense and don't give them a full icecream everyday but 2 mouth fulls on a hot a day as a one off some people really need to get a grip

peachescariad · 11/06/2021 11:56

Its not something I'd ever have done....I wouldn't eat that shit anyway so there's no way I'd give it to a baby.

drawerofwater · 11/06/2021 11:56

Your voting system makes no sense. I wouldn’t. It’s 6 months for a reason

SoMuchForSummerLove · 11/06/2021 11:57

A lick of ice cream off a spoon is really no big deal.

I can't imagine me stopping to 'discuss my weaning strategy' with my husband before letting one of my kids lick a bit of ice cream.

Babies are messy, most of it probably went on face/hands/clothes/hair/shoes/walls anyway.
