You gave the baby a McFlurry?!

Parent was eating a McFlurry ice cream and gave 5 month old baby a couple of spoonfuls...

YABU - WTF?! He's only 5 months old. His digestive system isn't ready for sugar-rich ice cream! Cue upset tummy and exploding nappy.

YANBU - Get a grip, it's a million degrees at the moment and it was just a couple of spoonfuls. No harm done.

@Serpenta
Love the 'formula milk is more sugary than vanilla ice-cream' takes. They're special.

So you think there is more sugar in two licks of ice cream than a bottle of formula?

Seriously79 · 11/06/2021 12:32

I don't see the problem. Kid could of been teething, cooling ice cream could of given a bit of relief.

m0therofdragons · 11/06/2021 12:32

With dd1 I would have gone nuts but with Dd 2&3 I’d have been a lot more chilled as a one off.

Wheresmybiscuit3 · 11/06/2021 12:34

I would have probably done the same with mine

Temp023 · 11/06/2021 12:34

This is exactly the kind of thing I might have done, but not admitted to..

Pinkblueberry · 11/06/2021 12:34

I wouldn’t - the baby would have been none the wiser for not having any. It’s not like a toddler who knows how good it will taste. I don’t think as a one off it would do any harm but it seems entirely unnecessary.

With DS1 I was the Annabel Karmel queen. With DS2, I have a photo of him at 7 months old on his first holiday abroad eating chocolate ice cream!

PleasantBirthday · 11/06/2021 12:37

I don't think it's the end of the world, but I can't see why you would. It's not that far off 6 months (which is also too soon). Why would you be so desperate to give a baby icecream that you couldn't hold off a few weeks?

AntiSocialDistancer · 11/06/2021 12:37

I wouldn't. I'd be cross if someone gave it to my baby without asking.

However I wouldn't dream of passing comment on anyone I saw doing it unless it was to my own child! Icecream really isnt that bad but I get to make the choice for my own kids.

PattyPan · 11/06/2021 12:37

I didn’t read the formula comments as a bash on formula, more pointing out that the occasional McFlurry is maybe not as bad as you might think. Someone posted the ingredients above, formula doesn’t have the emulsifier/stabiliser and obviously has vitamins added but it’s true they are both largely milk and sugar so no need to get a fit of the vapours over the McFlurry?

I was weaned onto baby custard at 3 months fwiw

MindyStClaire · 11/06/2021 12:37

We didn't wean either of ours til 6 months so I wouldn't have done it and wouldn't have been amused if someone else had done it. I doubt it would do any harm though.

DD2 is in the 6-12 month range and hasn't had ice cream, but I wouldn't mind her having a little taste at this stage. Again, I wouldn't do it but I wouldn't raise an eyebrow if someone else did.

CookieClub · 11/06/2021 12:37

@SlateCoaster Your 'friend' sounds like a busybody!!

I once saw a lady I know [not close friend, more acquaintance] shovelling chocolate buttons into her babies mouth when he was a similar age to your DS.
We were at a birthday party for our older children and watching them rollerskate and I do remember thinking WTF Grin and why would you be giving a baby that age loads of chocolate buttons, but I would NEVER EVER EVER have commented or said a word, because it was none of my business!

The fact your friend commented, just shows she's a bit of a know-it-all.

No harm done. Especially when you consider that some babies spend 9-months receiving heroin from their mums during pregnancy. Sad

Rise above it, but don't be shocked if his nappy is a shocker as a result Grin

kittycat863 · 11/06/2021 12:39

Someone else's kid, not yours. I would never feed my 5mo a mcflurry, but still, YABU.

Branleuse · 11/06/2021 12:40

Id be annoyed if someone gave a 5month old a whole mcflurry, but a couple of little spoons, i dont think i could get worked up over

CookieClub · 11/06/2021 12:40

@DudeIsADude

Wait until your DC wonders off in the garden and you find them trying to eat soil. Then you won't worry so much about ice cream 🤣
My DC2 first taste of anything other than milk, was animal feed. We'd gone to the farm for the day, the next thing I know they'd grabbed a bag of the animal feed and were munching on the pellets Blush Grin

Not likely at 5 months though!
bruffin · 11/06/2021 12:41

Im so glad my dc werent weaned when MN was around, the amount of paranoia and misinformation that has been posted over the years is ridiculous and only really did damage.

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 11/06/2021 12:45

I wouldn’t give dairy under six months

Mummyratbag · 11/06/2021 12:47

I let mine have a lick of my ice cream at about that age (may have been 6 months) - oh my, he held on to it like he'd won the lottery, face down and refused to come up for air! He's nearly a teenager now and loves most foods, would happily eat a plate of veg. I wouldn't give it another thought.

Dollywilde · 11/06/2021 12:50

I gave my 10 month old a lick of ice cream yesterday and her first sugar was a couple of weeks prior (bite of her daddy’s brownie). I wouldn’t have introduced sugar that early, we weren’t even giving her food before 6 months and the first few months were very much vegetable-focused. So sorry, no, I wouldn’t have done this. I would privately judge a friend who did but wouldn’t say anything as it’s not worth falling out over.

eddiemairswife · 11/06/2021 12:50

I've never had a McFlurry!

Creamcrackersandricecakes · 11/06/2021 12:50

Your friend needs to mind her own business, tbh. We went on holiday to Cornwall the week DD turned six months, and along with the finger foods and the Ella's pouches, she was treated to a couple of licks of my delicious Cornish vanilla ice cream. Nothing happened, the sky didn't fall in, she didn't even have a particularly bad nappy that I remember. She's now 12 and seems to have had no ill effects Wink.

Honestly couldn't give a monkey's if a baby has a couple of licks of some ice-cream. And honestly don't know why some people need to be in such a hurry to slag off formula given a chance.

TheGoogleMum · 11/06/2021 12:52

I wouldn't have done it myself as its too sugary for such a young baby really who might not even have started solids yet at that age... but I'm sure baby will be fine and a couple of spoons aren't worth getting upset over
