It just makes me so angry as it isn't an option for most of us yes I know some travel is "allowed" but it is all so uncertain. And lots of places require quarantine etc

I am absolutely sick of seeing smug celeb fuckers all over heat magazine in their bikinis sunning it up in various exotic locations! (Yes I know I could not read the shit but I'd still know it is happening) While the rest of us contemplate if a) we can afford the vastly overinflated prices to holiday in the uk ! And b) if we can be arsed with the extra crowds etc in popular places.

(I was hoping to take dh to New York for his 50th in September, clearly that won't happen)

I normally don't really care. Such is life that someone can afford more than me.
However, not being able to see family, especially around funerals, is harsh.
While bunch of dudes gets to jet to meet up when the summit could have easily be done via zoom

Exactly. I defy anyone tell a bereaved person to their face that their funeral wasn't as important as the stupid G7 meeting or Michael gove going to the football in Portugal and not having to quarantine. I am amazed that more people aren't kicking off as we are being.totally manipulated

loginfail · 12/06/2021 10:47

Who said funerals aren't important?

As a point of info travel into the UK/out of the UK is possible to attend funerals within the current rules..

"If you have travelled to England from a country not on the travel ban list, you may leave your place of self-isolation in limited circumstances, including on compassionate grounds. This may include attending a funeral of a household member or a close family member, or a friend" (that's actually a more relaxed/permissive rule than the one that applies in many overseas countries where attendance may by limited to family members only)

www.gov.uk/government/publications/covid-19-guidance-for-managing-a-funeral-during-the-coronavirus-pandemic/covid-19-guidance-for-managing-a-funeral-during-the-coronavirus-pandemic
It is also possible to leave the UK to travel to attend a funeral in a country on the Green or Amber list.

Many of the "rules" , "bans"" non-bans" that seem to be causing some to feel hard done by when they compare themselves with the "rich and famous" either don't actually exist or don't exist in the manner imagined.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 12/06/2021 11:12

You can attend funerals, but as a subject to testing and quarantines, it's simply not possible for many. Or most actually now.
Our families are in amber countries, we couldn't have gone fpr funerals because tests were expensive and we couldn't have had 10 days isolation on top of the time there.
That's what stopped most people I know

SchrodingersImmigrant · 12/06/2021 11:13

Actually I am pretty sure that one death was while the country was in red. I don't know. There was quiet a few

SchrodingersImmigrant · 12/06/2021 11:14

Oh and let's not forget that often there were different rules on the other side too.

YANBU

It's not even about being able to afford a holiday it's about being part of the elitist society.

Welcome to the new normal.

Prime example: Piers Morgan preaching about closing borders in GMTV then fucking off to Antigua for Christmas.

It's ok saying when COVID is over there won't be anymore excuses but it is the elites who decide if you ever get to know this.

Absolutely

I know what you mean OP. Yes, there has always been inequality but it feels like now that division is even greater.

loginfail · 12/06/2021 13:27

Piers Morgan preaching about closing borders in GMTV then fucking off to Antigua for Christmas.

That's just being a hypocrite and that's not something you only find amongst the rich and famous..

Members of the general public have been "fucking off" to the Caribbean, and elsewhere, on and off, over the last year and as long as they comply with the regs (which includes the possibility of leaving quarantine, on day5/6 if test and release comes good) I'm not sure there is anything to grumble about.

Fundamentally overseas travel is not restricted to the rich and famous or the global elite - but I certainly agree there are financial hurdles - and FWIW unlike some other countries the UK certainly seems to have made the testing processes darned expensive.

Member of the public were not fucking off last December right in the middle of the global pandemic. Morgan was spouting off right beforehand about closing our borders, yet did that himself, he is the hypocrite and wants those beneath him to abide by whatever nonsense the government come out with next as it doesn't effect him or anyone else in the elite.

If anyone thinks this is not inequality at its greatest they need to take a long hard fucking look at themselves. It is not ok on any level.

Curious as to why anyone wants to spend hours in a tin can in the sky just to go to a hot country and sit on the beach? And then suffer the reverse journey.

Personally, despite having travelled almost the entire coastline of England over half of Scotland and some of Wales, all major cities, lots of towns, every county and lots the countryside, I'm never going to visit everything our wonderous land has to offer

DelurkingAJ · 13/06/2021 10:30

@Ariela - my last experience of a Cornwall summer holiday was 13 days rain in August with a highlight of taking DS1 (then 3) to the local swimming pool (no slides or fun stuff just a pool). For the same money, pre COVID, we could go to the South of France and the DSs can spend every day out, swimming in the sea all day. And I can sit on the terrace in the evening with a glass of wine. Pre DC the U.K. was fab, pack your wet weather gear and it’s all fine. With small DC, I’d rather stay home and do day trips!

That's not what I've heard from people in a position to know, working in what's left of the travel industry..

Some members of the general public most definitely were travelling abroad in December..and FWIW the police/Border certainly were not manning or monitoring check-in at places like Heathrow.

It's quite simple - celebs/and the famous travelling makes the news, Mr and Mrs travelling on their lifesavings only creates ripples with the neighbours, their facebook groups and sometimes in threads in this place.

prettylittlestar · 13/06/2021 11:20

They are probably tested twice a week. But I agree. They are spoilt brats.

the80sweregreat · 13/06/2021 11:51

People got away last year. I know a few who managed it.
Just not as many as would normally. The travel industry is a huge loss to the economy and it'll only get worse too :(

Yes I feel so sorry for the travel industry and all the people who work in it 😞
