It just makes me so angry as it isn't an option for most of us yes I know some travel is "allowed" but it is all so uncertain. And lots of places require quarantine etc

I am absolutely sick of seeing smug celeb fuckers all over heat magazine in their bikinis sunning it up in various exotic locations! (Yes I know I could not read the shit but I'd still know it is happening) While the rest of us contemplate if a) we can afford the vastly overinflated prices to holiday in the uk ! And b) if we can be arsed with the extra crowds etc in popular places.

(I was hoping to take dh to New York for his 50th in September, clearly that won't happen)

It pisses me off more when people who jet around the world harp on about climate change - Prince Harry or David Attenborough for example. Even Greta Thunberg with her cross-Atlantic trip caused unnecessary carbon emissions (less than flying, but building and operating a boat isn't net zero).

minipie · 11/06/2021 11:56

They are still bringing staff from India as normal.

🤦‍♀️

They still flew the crew so it was just couple of seats less on a plane in the end
DynamoKev · 11/06/2021 12:11

I'm all for it - I fucking hate airports, they are miserable stinking holes. I love having an excuse not to fly and virtue signalling my climate credentials at the same time. Cheap air travel is (was) hell.

AlexanderArnold · 11/06/2021 12:19

I agree that air miles should be rationed.

But please lay off the footballers and other sportspeople. I would never have said this a year ago, I'm a bookish person who never watches TV and never played sport myself, but the football kept us sane as a family. My littlest is now reading a series of kids biographies of footballers and they are really inspirational. I'm grateful for the football!

MrsMiddleMother · 11/06/2021 12:28

Yanbu! It is a clear divide right now lots of money = travel not lots of money = no travel. Its nothing to do with all the other stuff being rich and maybe famous entails like big houses, nice cars, those things ordinary people can do but jetsetting here there and everywhere only they can do atm. And it's shit.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 11/06/2021 12:31

@Ozanj

When you travel for work you don’t need to quarantine. That’s the annoying bit. It seems quarantine is only for us plebs as the rich and famous can always find ways to get around it.
😑 really.
shetlandponies · 11/06/2021 14:12

@minipie

I agree, I don’t mind when someone can afford something I can’t, but I do mind when they are using their money/celeb status to evade rules that are there for the benefit of everyone.

This !! 👏🏻 it's exactly what I mean

Hmmm I'm self employed ...wonder if I could convince them I need to go to the Maldives or somewhere for work. (probably not as I don't think cleaning business owners or PMU artists particular need to fly abroad for work 😆 )

I am in a food industry. I really need to go to Greece to work on Greek burger so it has proper authentic flavours. Research

Missing the lint entirely - yanbu. But what annoys me it’s that they do this and then have the gall to tell us minions to be careful and minimise the use of x,y,z and to make eco friendly choices and yet they can do as they please! Grrrrr.

YANBU. We are a 2 tier society. Them. And us Angry

jakeyboy1 · 12/06/2021 00:02

The whole travel situation is ridiculous and should have been stopped in March 2020. I am desperate for a holiday but find myself trapped in a was green/now amber booking that I took a risk on when things looked more positive. Sick of all the travel adverts for places we can't go to and sick of DH's colleagues seemingly being able to come and go from India - WTAF!
Celebs - meh. Keep seeing shots of Leighanne Pinnock in her bikini with her baby bump wondering if she's actually abroad and who would fly when pregnant with all this going on!!

YANBU

It's not even about being able to afford a holiday it's about being part of the elitist society.

Welcome to the new normal.

Prime example: Piers Morgan preaching about closing borders in GMTV then fucking off to Antigua for Christmas.

It's ok saying when COVID is over there won't be anymore excuses but it is the elites who decide if you ever get to know this.

loginfail · 12/06/2021 08:46

When you travel for work you don’t need to quarantine.

Putting it politely that claim needs qualifying because as a general statement it's certainly not true for those arriving in the UK.

Only certain specified jobs get an exemption from some of the UK quarantine rules and often only a limited exemption, e.g. you can only break quarantine to perform a work related task. The rest of the time you go back into isolation.

Elite sportspersons are on the list of those that get some exemptions, .....as Bus and Coach drivers, Eurostar workers, Postal workers, and sewerage service workers..funnily enough generic "celebs" isn't..

www.gov.uk/government/publications/coronavirus-covid-19-travellers-exempt-from-uk-border-rules/coronavirus-covid-19-travellers-exempt-from-uk-border-rules
...and arriving in to the UK by private jet doesn't exempt you from the rules either.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 12/06/2021 08:58

That's interesting about goods drivers having to quarantine in a hotel after red country.
Imagine like if France went on a red list. Or some other eu country. Friend's dh is alorry driver and he can go through number of countries in 24 hours.
His friends and him are also still refusing to drive UK apparently after that massive lorry fuck up with drivers getting stuck. They now get offered bonuses for it.

Wheresmybiscuit3 · 12/06/2021 09:21

I can’t stand double standards and Covid has certainly highlighted that a lot for me

SchrodingersImmigrant · 12/06/2021 09:24

I normally don't really care. Such is life that someone can afford more than me.
However, not being able to see family, especially around funerals, is harsh.
While bunch of dudes gets to jet to meet up when the summit could have easily be done via zoom😂

I know someone who works overseas and has to quarantine
Sinthie · 12/06/2021 09:29

YANBU. They have found ways to ignore the “rules” throughout the pandemic (travel for “work”= a bikini photo shoot on a beach 🙄) and can travel freely in a way that is now out of bounds for many people. It makes me angry too. The rules don’t seem to apply to the rich.

But they do apply to the rich, unless the rich person makes their money doing specific a job that is on the exempt list.

Look for example at the "influencers" some still seem obsessed with.

The "influencers" don't get any quarantine exemptions (I posted the link to the UK gov list of those that do upthread).

Their seemingly most popular habitat overwinter was the UAE (aka by some as Dubhai) - that is now on the UK red list - that means managed quarantine for anybody returning from the place or transiting through there on the way to the UK.

and ..even if they arrive from overseas by private jet they/the aircraft operator has to arrive at a controlled airport, will have filed a flight plan and they are subject to the same rules as you and I.
