What a coup for Cornwall to get the G7

If Cornwall make a success of this then surely they should relocate the foreign office there full time. If the government are serious about leveling up anyway.

Tremendous fillip.

Cornwall is a very deprived area so it would be great to use this as a way of getting more funding for local businesses and communities but I don’t think it will happen. Although I’m very proud that it is being hosted in Cornwall as nothing exciting usually happens here Grin

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 09/06/2021 22:42

To be fair 'Cornwall' has has very little say in this.
It's a right pain in the neck.

NursePye · 09/06/2021 22:46

It's been a while since we've had a thread slagging off Cornwall. How I've missed them Grin

Must be a slow day for pps.

Yes we're all miserable and we don't like outsiders .... remind me what the other stereotypes are please as it's been a long day and the school buses are all leaving early because of the incoming planes.

We're under the flight path and have been waiting for AirForce 1 all day but it's very cloudy so I can't wave to Joe from my front garden as I'd hoped.

It was meant to be a positive thread.

Oh my apologies @User135644 - I must be reading it wrong (all those positive comments about us being miserable, hating outsiders, ripping people off and being up ourselves Smile).

I'm off to bed, sorry not to welcome you in person Joe Smile

Just a few jealous people that the president is in your area and not their towns.

We aren't hosting the G7, the govt is, no one down here has had a say in anything at all.

This is showing how some people just get their opinions from twitter hot takes, no local gets a say in where the G7 summit takes place, it isn't unique to the tories nor is it unique to the UK.

The G7 hasn't given a shit to the local economy during any of there events, being that in Germany/NI/Holland/Sweden etc etc, to try and slant this as an anti tory slant shows they know nothing about what the summit is or the history, it's the type of person who would spend years railing aginst neoliberlism until the brexit vote and take some stance that the EU is somehow less neoliberal than the UK so that.

Tealightsandd · 09/06/2021 23:00

Was Cornwall Boris's idea?

Beautiful place for a honeymoon.

Perhaps he's multi tasking. G7 by day, newly wed in the evenings? Will Biden bring a gift?

I actually think it's not such a bad idea OP. Relocating a government department, bringing new jobs. Just so long as it's not the same 'investment' London's suffered the last 30 years.

As you probably noticed in recent years, that sort of investment is as harmful to Cornish locals as it has been to London locals. You definitely don't want the social cleansing London has seen (I know it's started to happen already in Cornwall).

The way to do it, unlike what happened in London, is new jobs - but also new affordable housing. To buy but also to rent.

ICanSmellSummerComing · 09/06/2021 23:02

Cornwall is a special place, yes I agree move some big government dept there.
I've just come back, the locals were incredibly friendly, they made our holiday, the coves, adventure etc is second to non in UK

It needs a boost, yes m

Nurse Pye
I seem to remember a stereotypical slagging us off thread the other week Grin
Seems to have been a lot of choppers passing over here today (Im on the Lizard) but don't think I'm on the flight path for Joe's plane.

This is what happens when someone reads a bit of a post and then goes of on a tangent, accusing the poster of stuff that was never written or intended....

I don't know what Twitter is.....

jeez no wonder we dont like you English lol

NursePye · 09/06/2021 23:11

@Port1aCastis - we had loads of these plane/helicopter hybrids over us last night. Felt a bit like Apocalypse Now!!! Just had another plane but I'm not going outside at this hour. DH just taken the dog for a walk- probably with binoculars as he finds it slightly more interesting than me!!Grin

This is good news.

Personally, I'm delighted that we're hosting the G7, I think it's a wonderful opportunity to showcase Cornwall's beauty to the world. Everyone is welcome to come and visit us in the future, apart from Macncheeseballs Wink

Serin · 09/06/2021 23:14

Welcome Mr Biden.

Witchesbelazy · 09/06/2021 23:17

I want to move to Cornwall , not to be a second home owner just love the place. I always found people welcoming too. It’s mainly online I’ve found the vocal anti outsider stuff

LaurieFairyCake · 09/06/2021 23:19

People do like to moan about people from Cornwall moaning Hmm

I was there last week:

  1. No high prices

(I'm from London)

  1. People are friendly

(Just like London )

  1. Not up itself

(Unlike some people I know)

Cornwall was amazing last week with its 120,000 extra visitors Shock - everyone on last years hols and this years

Didn't even feel busy - it's bloody huge

The G7 will undoubtedly be good to showcase Cornwall around the world - think of the heli cams from news agencies ! But obviously closing all the bridges into the area - there's 30 of them, which has been reported on the news is a fucking stupid idea - people still need to get to work !

But hopefully it will attract investment plus visitors (so they don't always come to London when the rest of the UK is so beautiful)

Port1aCastis · 09/06/2021 23:21

Nurse Pye yes those large hybrid choppers have been over here a few times today, my Mum thought they were 'them choppers out of that film maid' Grin think she meant black hawk down but you never know with Mum.

HagenDaz · 09/06/2021 23:28

Is there going to be an opening ceremony and will people get the cream and jam the wrong way round?

NursePye · 09/06/2021 23:40

Hooray- Joe's just flown right over our house!!! Could only see lights as v foggy but DH spoke to 'spotters' in our lane who had an app plotting the planes apparently!! They've now moved up to the main road to watch his 'cavalcade' Grin

Meanwhile, I'm going to bed. DH now debating walking up there with his camera. Crazy man Grin

PS he does his scones the devon way (better not mention that to Joe Grin

Macncheeseballs · 10/06/2021 09:01

Struggling - haha, the beauty of Cornwall though, is that it doesn't actually belong to the cornish so I can go there any time I god dam want, I just try and avoid the pitchforks

Macncheeseballs · 10/06/2021 09:01

*damn want!

DynamoKev · 10/06/2021 09:06

What a ridiculous thread

EssentialHummus · 10/06/2021 09:13

I’ve no idea how people in Cornwall feel about it but from the outside looking in it seems a bit mad to find a bit of the UK currently overrun with domestic tourists and choose that for a global political conference. I presume there’s a history of hosting these in beautiful/scenic places?

Nodal · 10/06/2021 09:23

I was in Falmouth over HT and specifically canvassed opinion on this. I have to say every single person I spoke to about it was extremely negative about the G7 thing, whcih I thought was somewhat a shame. In particular, we hired a fishing boat that normally does deep sea fishing trips for a few hours on a day when you couldn't go out fishing because of conditions for a trip up the river and the Cornish owner spent the entire trip complaining about tourists, second home owners and the G7. Happy to take my money though on a day with no other work of course. It's a tough one, I don't know what the answer is. We were sailing past huge house after house on the river's edge and he kept saying that one cost X million, never see the owners etc. I can totally understand the frustration. But on the other hand, here was a Cornish fisherman who has managed to diversify into the tourist section, has a state of the art fishing boat and was making x hundred pound for a couple of hours pootling round the harbour and up the river on a day where he couldn't fish. I think Cornwall has to fully embrace tourism, and the money it brings and find some way to live with it. I don't see how the genie can go back in the bottle and so many businesses there are based around tourism. I don't know what the answer to the second home thing is though. It's so beautiful down there you can see why they're there but it can't be right that Cornish young people can't even buy starter homes. But then that's been true of most of London for decades.

Thr only people who was happy about it were the waiting staff in pizza express because the BBC news team had taken over the restaurant for a week, they were getting paid even if they didn't work and they were excited about getting on TV!

The travel/parking restrictions were annoying, I know, but in all honesty it seemed more like dumb tourists who had booked trips without knowing the G7 that were affected last week when I was there - most locals were either staying put or had gone away for the week - though I'm sure people that still had to drive for work must be being affected like a PP.

Ah but you're from London which was hugely unfriendly, hideously expensive and (in posh areas) totally up itself when I lived there for a couple years - and hideously deprived in other areas, just like Cornwall in fact.

Cornwall's roads are hell - at least the G7 wasn't in half term, could you imagine?? Who wants to fly into London and then spend god knows how many hours getting to Cornwall. I mean the far end is really beautiful in places (love the Minack theatre/Porth Curno just stay away from the tackfest that is Lands End) but it's really, really far from anything (and I grew up in Devon). I really can't see it becoming a world business destination anytime soon.
