To think this is chilling?

Students in an Oxford college did what students do - questioned the status quo and decided to replace a picture that is political, ie a head of state. A measured and inclusive message accompanied this.

And the education secretary has waded in to criticise a student body for actions within their own space? And DM is publishing the student’s photo and family home and much his dad earns! Wtf?!

It reminds me of the Middle East or North Korea or perhaps Thailand where people have a photo of their beloved unelected leader as a sign of patriotism or else they are viewed unfavourably.

I mean, really?!!!

Does anyone else care or is it just me then?Sad

OP posts:
Palavah · 09/06/2021 10:48

What are you talking about?

Frogcorset · 09/06/2021 10:49

Maybe link to the news story? I only happened to know about it because of a friend who's a fellow of Magdalen.

Posieandpip · 09/06/2021 10:50

Doesn't sound very chilling or anything even remotely like what would happen in North Korea, are you serious????!!!!!

JohnSteinbeck · 09/06/2021 10:51

I didn’t see the bit about family home or how much his dad earns (maybe they took it out, of someone complained?) but I did see that they named his father & father’s profession. The student is 25, it’s irrelevant what his father does - even if he were a conventional undergrad at 18, it shouldn’t matter. Fucking shit newspaper. I hope loads of people complain.

Moonmelodies · 09/06/2021 10:52

Students did what students do - seek attention.

Shitzngiggles · 09/06/2021 10:52

Well I'm pretty sure that in North Korea you would not even have been able to post whatever it is you're going in about.

Gorgeouslilgirl · 09/06/2021 10:53

I do two any yo link to the DF one, it is horrendous and the poor kid must be feeling violated and scared ha I guess his picture and personal details splashed in a national newspaper,

Here is the guardian www.theguardian.com/education/2021/jun/09/president-of-oxford-college-defends-students-right-to-remove-photo-of-queen

OP posts:
Celandines · 09/06/2021 10:56

People are free to have or not have a photo of the Queen up as they wish. It's nothing to do with Gavin Bloody Williamson. The Daily Mail are fuckers for outing and shaming people about it if they've done that but it's no surprise

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 09/06/2021 10:57

I dont think its chilling at all tbh

Palavah · 09/06/2021 10:57

The DM did what the DM does - they continue to be disgusting.

This Tory government love playing culture wars so of course Williamson was going to wade in. It has nothing to do with him.

Palavah · 09/06/2021 10:58

*THIS Tory government

Gorgeouslilgirl · 09/06/2021 10:58

Sorry for the typos. Yes, the DF had his picture, how much his family home is worth (!) what his dad does and earns.

And why on earth is the government (!) expressing displeasure at the lawful actions of private individuals in their own private space?

The mind boggles!

It has shades of fanatical devotion that doesn’t sit well with democratic values

OP posts:
Gorgeouslilgirl · 09/06/2021 11:01

Is the DF even legally allowed to do this? Can they publish photos and identifying information about anyone without their consent even if they have done nothing unlawful and their activities are within a private space?

OP posts:
Gorgeouslilgirl · 09/06/2021 11:03

@Letsallscreamatthesistene

I dont think its chilling at all tbh
So you would be ok if you or your child was condemned and plastered all over DF, just for politely expressing an opinion that DF didn’t like?
OP posts:
Frogcorset · 09/06/2021 11:03

Come to think of it, I tabled a motion to get a portrait taken down from the common room in my college, and it was passed uncontroversially, despite some Young Tory wading in at the last minute.

Yanbu OP. People dont see fascism/dictatorship until it's too bloody late.

VodkaSlimline · 09/06/2021 11:06

Do you mean this?
www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-9667433/American-scholar-tabled-motion-cancel-Queen.html

The rise of cancel culture is very much in the public interest, as is highlighting the naivety and hypocrisy of those who seek to erase history and force the rest of us to have only what they approve.

Gorgeouslilgirl · 09/06/2021 11:06

@soreenqueen21

Unless they were taken out and shot for removing the picture, your comparison to N Korea is extremely OTT.
Ok fine. What about the comparison to the Middle East and Thailand?

I can imagine the poor kid is scared and getting hate mail. DF and William G must be aware how many nutters and haters are out there. How could they make this a national issue?!

He isn't a kid! He's a 25 year old man ffs

Gorgeouslilgirl · 09/06/2021 11:11

@VodkaSlimline

We are a democracy but we are also a monarchy. If this privileged American kid has such a problem with that maybe he should have stayed in the US.
It wasn’t just him, was it? It was voted by a majority.

And why should current students be subject to the Queen or Boris or whomever previous occupants had put up in their common room?

And the irony of decrying the kid having privilege when the monarchy embodies privilege 😃

OP posts:
VodkaSlimline · 09/06/2021 11:12

Why do you keep saying DF? Do you mean the Daily Mail? There is no comparison to the Middle East or Thailand. If anything, the rise of woke culture and the denunciation, shaming and censorship of anything/anyone that might make someone somewhere feel "unsafe", to the point of erasing history, has far more in common with North Korea than what you're upset about. That is what I find "chilling".

JemimaTiggywinkle · 09/06/2021 11:12

It’s not “cancel culture”… a group of students in 2013 wanted to decorate their common room with a picture of the queen. Another group of students now wants to redecorate.

It’s not any kind of official university portrait or decision… it’s literally changing a poster in the common room.

Completely ridiculous that Gavin Williamson has any opinion on it at all.
