To ask why all wrap dresses are designed to flash chest?

Every one I've tried or ever bought without fail seems to be cut to the navel almost , necessitating a vest and therefore rendering it frumpy. Why? Why?
Yet I'm constantly told a wrap dress will suit me (kind way of saying I need help to find a waist o fear or that my belly needs hiding)
Sadly they do suit me but I cannot find one with a high enough neckline.
Rant over. I'm post migraine and angry and upset all at the same time. And my teen never talks to me. Sigh

I like them personally - just stick a safety pin in as others have said

BackBeatTheWordisOnTheStreet · 09/06/2021 08:51

@user1473878824

I find with my flat chest they gape.
Me too! I always thought they'd look nice if I had some proper boobs. How does anyone wear them then?
MrsTulipTattsyrup · 09/06/2021 08:53

I’m 5’3” and I find that they’re almost all indecent on me because the waist is way too low (I’m quite short in the body), so I’d not be out of place on Strictly with the depth of the plunge. I think the style would suit me if made for someone my height but I rarely find one in a petite range.

rubymaster · 09/06/2021 08:57

Another recommendation for modesty panels here! I’ve had the same issue with wrap dresses but found these modesty panels on eBay which button securely around my bra and work a treat. www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Modesty-Panels-Cleavage-cover-Faux-camisole-Bra-One-size-Handmade-UK-/193826834714?_trksid=p2349624.m46890.l49286

IrmaFayLear · 09/06/2021 08:57

@MrsTulipTattsyrup - I have had a couple from Wallis petite range. You can find them new on eBay.

My best wrap dress with false wrap bit came from Matalan. I wore it to death. I wish I’d bought three of them!

woopdedoodle · 09/06/2021 08:58

The cut is wrong, in the 90s I lived in wrap dresses I made my self. No issue. Made 3 from a new pattern for my daughter and myself last year. Terrible, I had to recut the pattern for both of us, losing 2 inches in the bust.
I don't know who they are cut for, but from this thread no one I know.

TatianaBis · 09/06/2021 08:59

I have camisole tops to wear underneath. And you buy a lacy band in Ivory or black to put across.

OccaChocca · 09/06/2021 08:59

Never fit me.

Skirt and top are a much better option and more comfortable.

SquirrelFan · 09/06/2021 09:00

I have one that's shaped a bit at the front, with a shorter V and has a popper included. It's great! Some Swedish make, I think...

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 09/06/2021 09:01

Interesting! Sounds like it could be a good challenge on the made to measure section of the Great British Sewing Bee. Make a wrap dress to the exact proportions of the model and get it fitted so it doesn't gape or strain.

I can barely thread a needle so the idea of having to alter a dress to make it wearable is horrific, even something as simple as adding a popper in the right place.

HipTightOnions · 09/06/2021 09:01

I have unremarkable medium-sized boobs and I have always needed a vest top too. I’m not convinced there is any shape that can go without, except in carefully-posed photos.

TatianaBis · 09/06/2021 09:01

Diane Von Furstenberg is actually the worst I find, they seem to assume you’re flat chested.

LK Bennett are the best cut across the chest.

Chocolatefreak · 09/06/2021 09:02

Agree! They gape on me too, extremely frustrating. Small boobs don't help. I wear a dress with a safety pin and a jumpsuit with a wrapover top bit and have to wear a vest under that. Have tried poppers and sewing too. No satisfactory solution - not going to buy any more like that!

TillyTottenham · 09/06/2021 09:03

@Gertie75

You can buy panels of material that clip to your bra stap, I'm not sure what they are called, they're usually plain with a clip on each top corner which fill the v shaped gap at the front of the dress, you can clip it as high or low as you like.
They're called modesty panels.Hmm
Sunshineandflipflops · 09/06/2021 09:04

@HeidiHighLow

Add a stitch in
Same. I like the look of a wrap dress on me but always safety pin the top from the inside so you can't see it.
OldTinHat · 09/06/2021 09:07

I'm going to upset everyone by saying I'm a pear shape, overweight (working on that!) with average boobs. Wrap dresses are literally the only thing that look good on me. Yes they plunge somewhat but not obscenely so. I love them!

I totally agree OP. Wrap dresses always get suggested for people with large boobs but I've never understood why. Every wrap dress I've ever tried makes me look like I'm auditioning for a porn movie.

The 2 I have which have to have a vest top underneath are from Bravissimo too so I think they should know w better!

QueenAdreena · 09/06/2021 09:12

Yes! I’m short and busty (32H), wrap dresses make me so look so much better than most clothes but are way too low cut all the time. I end up with most of my cleavage hanging out if I’m not careful. Always add stitches in.

queenatom · 09/06/2021 09:15

Yep, love the idea of them but I'm v chesty and can't wear them without flashing half my bra. I have a few faux-wraps, I think from H&M, and they're great!

MrsKoala · 09/06/2021 09:20

I love them, but I need to find the right ones. I have 3 DVF ones and they fit perfectly. Cheaper ones are too short in the body and the wrap/tie/waist part is on my ribcage as I'm very tall - which is uncomfortable and unflattering. When I was flat chested I wore a simple white vest or matching crop top I didn't mind showing (I didn't think it looked frumpy as I often wore both instead of bras anyway as only an a cup). But now I'm a d cup they sit on the right part of my chest without gaping. I think if you are very big boobed they can draw a lot of attention by separating and sort of projecting boobs towards the onlooker

randomkey123 · 09/06/2021 09:24

There was a thread once about clothing and someone commented that wearing a wrap dress was like announcing "here are my boobs, the rest of me will follow along shortly" and it's so true.

I've got 2 really nice ones from Monsoon and have to wear a safety pin with them.

miltonj · 09/06/2021 09:25

They're for women with larger chests. Who are excluded from wearing a lot of other designs of dress. There's nowt wrong with showing a bit of boob!

OvertiredandConfused · 09/06/2021 09:26

I wear these under wrap dresses. Much more comfortable than a bra, very cool in warm weather and ample support (I'm a 40DD)

riveted1 · 09/06/2021 09:29

I'm very short and also pretty flat chested so suffer the same issue OP!

a lace bralet/crop top does the job of making sure I'm not flashing anyone and doesn't look frumpy Grin

cleckheatonwanderer · 09/06/2021 09:31

Yeah I had one that I wore a cami vest underneath that was a similar colour to the dress but I can't be bothered with the faff of that to get any more. I tried adding a stitch to a wrap top in the past but it ruined the flow of the seams and looked rubbish.

I look for shirt dresses now instead, they cover my flat/boney chest.
