To ask why all wrap dresses are designed to flash chest?

Every one I've tried or ever bought without fail seems to be cut to the navel almost , necessitating a vest and therefore rendering it frumpy. Why? Why?
Yet I'm constantly told a wrap dress will suit me (kind way of saying I need help to find a waist o fear or that my belly needs hiding)
Sadly they do suit me but I cannot find one with a high enough neckline.
Rant over. I'm post migraine and angry and upset all at the same time. And my teen never talks to me. Sigh

I also have the flat chest/gaping problem, I've bought a few little brooches to pin them up a bit higher when it is too warm for vest tops.

Cyranosbestie · 09/06/2021 08:20

Because manufacturers want to use as little material as possible and so you're forced to buy a T-shirt or vest to go underneath £££

Mycatispretty · 09/06/2021 08:27

Relief to know it’s not just me. I thought I was some freak of nature having to wear a vest top underneath!

unicornpower · 09/06/2021 08:28

Honestly it infuriates me! i bought a maternity wrap dress and there was so much chest on display it was awful! i loved the dress so i just sewed up the front but i have no idea why companies think we all want cleavage on display?

monicacat · 09/06/2021 08:29

I always wear a nice vintage brooch to hold mine closed. They are not expensive and look nice.

I'm not sure they do think this, given that a wide range of necklines and styles are available... I have almost no plunging dresses.
Pollypocket21 · 09/06/2021 08:30

I wear a little strappy crop top under the dress, this works fine

CounsellorTroi · 09/06/2021 08:30

I’m an F cup and find I still have to wear a padded bra for wrap styles to fit properly and not gape.

Enko · 09/06/2021 08:31

Try bravissimo for wrap that doesn't flash. Only place I have found where it actually considered a bust

Imicola · 09/06/2021 08:33

I use a beautiful vintage brooch to keep it shut - its the only time I ever really use the brooch, but it does the job and gives me an excuse to use it!

LemonRoses · 09/06/2021 08:34

I love wrap dresses and most don’t gape. I think they suit the slightly rounded figure best though.

Some very low cut ones I would wear a camisole with, but not most.

Lalliella · 09/06/2021 08:34

I love them! I pop a brooch on them if they’re too gaping. (What a weird word brooch is, I’ve never typed it before!)

whatswithtodaytoday · 09/06/2021 08:35

I have one friend who suits wrap dresses. She has the most perfect figure - very tiny waist, full but not overly big boobs, long body so looks elongated and everything sits nicely.

I don't know anyone else who wears them. I'm the type of body shape they should 'flatter' and they make me look matronly and never, ever fit without a stitch.

PoppityPop · 09/06/2021 08:35

I’ve just bought a gorgeous wrap dress from Silk Fred (I think it’s a Ruby Rocks dress) and it’s gorgeous but so low cut. I don’t have particularly big boobs and it would be a nightmare if I did.

3branch · 09/06/2021 08:37

It's amazing what a bit of random googling will reveal. I present: the modesty panel

FindingMeno · 09/06/2021 08:37

I'm not sure who decided wrap dresses are so flattering.
I look like I've got a dressing gown on with a thickened middle and poorly sitting top because wherever I put a safety pin its wrong.

coogee · 09/06/2021 08:38

Whereas, women are expected to make their bodies fit the clothes.

If necessary, I make the clothes fit my body. It's easier.

Oooh, I like this idea. I'm a stitch or poppers person for crossovers but will be on the lookout for vintage broaches now.
Jacopo · 09/06/2021 08:41

Hurray! I’m another one who thought my body was wrong, but it was the dresses all along!
Do any of these designers try their dresses on real people and get them to wear them for a day or two?

SirVixofVixHall · 09/06/2021 08:42

@Gertie75

You can buy panels of material that clip to your bra stap, I'm not sure what they are called, they're usually plain with a clip on each top corner which fill the v shaped gap at the front of the dress, you can clip it as high or low as you like.
My Great Aunt gave me a little square of lace with tiny pins on each corner , from the 1920s . She called it a “modesty vest” . I am amazed they still exist ! OP I am busty and like a wrap dress, the trick is too get one with a slight stretch to the fabric, and one size up. Although I do also resort to safety pins, a popper, or a slip underneath for the ones where this doesn’t work (I have a couple of Toast dresses where the bodice wraps but not the whole dress, so they can’t be wrapped more snugly. )
AnnaSW1 · 09/06/2021 08:43

Yes they are crap and adding a vest or Stitch or poppers just makes it look a bit rubbish

sandgrown · 09/06/2021 08:43

I have a beautiful wrap dress that I wore for a wedding. I did pin the front and it was fine when standing up. Through the wedding breakfast I noticed the man opposite staring at me and realised he had a fantastic view of my cleavage and lacy bra as the dress was gaping open !

TheKeatingFive · 09/06/2021 08:45

Safety pins or a carefully placed stitch.

I have big boobs, I thought it was just me.

NotQuiteUsual · 09/06/2021 08:48

This is what safety pins were invented for! Either that or embrace everyone seeing most of your tits on the school run.

Lightswitchesoffatnight · 09/06/2021 08:48

Completely agree. I have big boobs but I don’t like showing cleavage, especially not for day to day dressing. I’ve just bought some lacey material to sew into the gap. It’s not ideal.
