Should he have washed his hands?

DH was pottering in the garden, nothing heavy just pulling a few weeds and dead heading a few flowers. He came in and started to unload the dishwasher, I said "shouldn't you wash your hands?" He looked at me like I was crazy.

His hand weren't visibly dirty but surely they needed washing. Personally I was my hands every time I unload the dishwasher. If I'm going to touch all the things we eat off and eat with I want clean hands.

AIBU?

In an ideal world probably yes, but it’s not something I’d give head space. Having worked in a restaurant I’ve seen all the plates and shaved etc and they are much much much worse than not washing your hands after the garden so 🤷🏻‍♀️

DisgruntledPelican · 08/06/2021 22:11

YANBU, it’s not great. Seems to (still) not occur to some people to wash their hands whenever they’ve been doing something messy!

SympathyFatigue · 08/06/2021 22:12

Yes he should have. Cat shit, toxoplasmosis, various soil related food poisoning toxins.

Plus it's just grubby.

WishingHopingThinkingPraying · 08/06/2021 22:14

What exactly do you think was on his hands?

MrsFin · 08/06/2021 22:17

What doesn't kill you makes you stronger.
I wouldn't have thought to wash my hands if I'd just been pulling weeds, nor anytime before unloading the dishwasher.

WildNorthEast · 08/06/2021 22:20

YANBU

scrivette · 08/06/2021 22:20

I don't think I would have washed mine either, o often walk into the garden, pull up a couple of weeds and then walk back in. It wouldn't occur to me to wash my hands just because I was in the garden.

And other various animal deposits from their rear ends that end up on people's gardens and then ending up all over the plates.

Sounds like a good addition to any meal.

Melitza · 08/06/2021 22:22

Washing your hands is basic hygiene.
Seems some people have soon gone back to their slapdash ways after all the handwashing adverts.

Ohhok · 08/06/2021 22:28

Yes! Trust me, parasites are not fun (I work in microbiology).

I doubt the weeds have covid.

Spanglebangle · 08/06/2021 22:36

To all those saying I am unreasonable, surely the garden is full of animal waste. Slugs, snails, birds, who knows what else.

Surely the idea of the poo transferring to your cutlery is vomit inducing?

I am not really fussy but i always wash my hands before i unload the dishwasher, don't like the idea of putting germs on plates that people will be eating from.

Hawkins001 · 08/06/2021 22:42

Straight away, they should be washed, basic hygiene, and regardless of how they looked,

Hawkins001 · 08/06/2021 22:43

I wish society was actually more health aware.

Don’t you have birds, rats, mice chickens, slugs, bugs, wasps, cats, squirrels and loads more birds, all over your garden... ??

Ugh. We have frogs, slugs, worms, hedgehogs, and loads more creatures.

WASH YOUR HANDS

Yummymummy2020 · 08/06/2021 22:43

I would always wash my hands too before unloading the dishwasher and certainly if I was gardening. I actually thought it was just the done thing!

aiwblam · 08/06/2021 22:46

Really filthy and shows a complete lack of common sense.

Some plants/weeds are poisonous. So rub this on dishes/cutlery? Idiot.

duvets · 08/06/2021 22:46

Definitely should have been washed, that is gross! Could be all sorts on there from plants and soil. And would stress me out to think about the other hygiene misdemeanors I don't happen to see.

BirthdayCakeBelly · 08/06/2021 22:49

YANBU!

warmandtoasty2day · 08/06/2021 22:53

i always wash my mitts after gardening the same after using the loo. just revolting not to imo. but each to their own.

SlugsAreBastards · 08/06/2021 22:54

Even my teens know to wash their hands before unloading the dishwasher and they certainly wouldn’t have been doing yard work before doing it (unfortunately) so YADNBU!

🤮 A cat could have pissed on those weeds.
Looubylou · 08/06/2021 23:02

Absolutely, YANBU, but you are probably fighting a losing battle. I constantly pick up my partner about arriving in the kitchen and starting to get food out of fridge etc ready for tea, without washing. He gets really arsey when caught out. I deliberately leave the kitchen when he starts cooking to avoid arguments. I wash my hands before putting kettle on, putting clean crockery away, touching any food.

Wanttocry · 08/06/2021 23:03

I wash my hands before putting kettle on

Even if you’d just been inside your house? Why?
