To do almost nothing at work

I finished uni a couple of years ago and am going back in September to do a further course relevant to the industry I want to work in. I have done an admin temp job for a year and a bit and just started a new one. In both, but especially the one I’ve just started, there seems to be almost nothing for me to do-the first role was office based so I helped other colleagues and managed to find just about enough stuff to do to fill the time, but I did spend quite a lot of time pretending to look busy. I told my boss regularly I could do with more work and he would give me a task that would take maybe 30 mins. I didn’t want to mention I wasn’t busy too much though so I didn’t lose the job. When I started wfh due to covid I did less and less and spent a lot of time watching tv with my laptop.
The job I’ve just started is a mix of office and home work and I honestly don’t know why they’ve hired me. I was in the office for the last 2 weeks and was fairly busy but I’m fairly sure I completed the task they hired me to do which was supposed to take at least 3 months. It seems my job now is just to email 3 people occasionally to remind them to do part of their job/fill in some forms that I can’t fill in. I’ve been working from home this week and have done embarrassingly little-but there seems to be almost nothing for me to do. I’ve messaged my manager and another colleague saying “I’m doing this at the moment and nearly done is there anything else you’d like me to do” and they either haven’t replied or have told me to do something that they must know takes about 10 mins. I have to go into the office for the rest of the week and I have no clue what I’ll do-I’m saving a small task I could do today so I can do it there slowly and look busy. I’m sat in my garden in the lovely sun now and feel quite guilty-but also isn’t it my manager’s responsibility to give me work to do (especially if I specifically ask for more work) and to check I’m being productive? I’m not interested in this industry and I doubt I’ll need a reference from them and am leaving in August-I wouldn’t mind that much if the contract was cut short as I’m just here for some extra money. So is it unreasonable to avoid mentioning to them how little I have to do and coast along till August? I would actually prefer to be busier but I’m worried if I keep pointing out that there’s not much to do they’ll just get rid of me.
Since I’ve found both temp office jobs I’ve done to have a very light workload-I was wondering-is it normal for office juniors/admin people to have very little to do and is there actually tons of people in offices everywhere all pretending to be busy? (Genuine question and no offence meant to any people who do work in admin and have busy roles). At my last company, there seemed to be far too many admin people all not doing a great deal.

Enjoy it !

@QuimKardashian and others who want a job like this-I doubt they are hard to find and are fairly easy to get. It doesn’t require any skills or experience to do nothing-I got my first job having never worked in an office before! Look for temp admin jobs on reed or similar-many start off temp and can be extended for years if you pretend to be busy! Pay is £11-15 an hour In south east. You could try as many different temp roles and leave if it’s too busy-notice period is usually only a week and I’m sure it wouldn’t take long to find a quiet/boring one. It’s probably more likely to be quiet if there’s no tasks that can be regularly monitored/measured in the job description, or if you report to several managers (so all assume the others will give you work).
I think it’s harder to find a busy permanent job where you are actually needed!

I was made redundant 10yrs ago and have a health condition which has prevented me from getting another job but in the 27 years I did work I was never in a job with little to do, I was always really busy, so much so that I was constantly doing more hours than I was paid to do.

As you're only likely to be with this company for another month or two, if still keep asking for work but if its not given, find something else to do with your time and enjoy getting paid for doing nothing.

SeaWitchly · 10/06/2021 01:34

I am so jealous of people who have jobs like this - all my roles have been in the health service and have been stressful and busy, with not enough hands to do the required work and plenty of unpaid overtime.

Tzimi · 10/06/2021 06:45

It'a a shame you can't use the time to travel a bit, since it's pretty much impossible to go anywhere at the moment. Last time I was in this situation, I did quite a bit of travelling & exploring new cities, and really enjoyed it.

Tossblanket · 10/06/2021 06:47

Enjoy it and take the money.

Better than being stressed out of your mind with too much to do.

Helena39 · 10/06/2021 06:54

I had a job like yours for 3 years. Was bored to death every day. Now I have a job and I do the work for 4 people. I am so busy every day flies. Still, I don’t miss the other job. Best to be busy and feel that you are doing something instead of feeling completely useless.
BUT enjoy it whilst you can! There aren’t
not many jobs like that around.

Prinzy · 10/06/2021 11:01

Use the time to learn something new, write a book, read a book, just find something you enjoy or discover something to enjoy to make the time less tedious. Nothing worse though than being a hard working employee with not enough work to do

peachdribble · 10/06/2021 12:37

I'd like a job like this!
Where can I get a job like this please?

Sometimesfraught82 · 10/06/2021 13:12

It’s odd
Those in really busy jobs aren’t listening to those who are in these kinds of jobs or have had experience of them.

It’s shit. Totally shit. The day crawls and by the end you feel so... worthless

Now I have a busy manageable job and SO much happier

MrsLCSofLichfield · 11/06/2021 10:44

My sense of self-worth is not tied to a job, never has been and never will be. I need to provide for my family and pay the bills, and that is a source of self-worth and security, of course. But being busy all day long? Nah, fuck that shit.

OrangeRug · 11/06/2021 10:52

I work in admin and my job is pretty cruisy unless the phones are busy or it's our financial year end. If I finish all my work when I'm in the office I can usually find something to do though - there is always archiving/sorting things out for the shredder/cleaning etc to be done. I've been in this job for 11 years now since leaving school. It's not my dream career but I've become complacent and it's a decent company to work for.

CandyLeBonBon · 11/06/2021 10:53

I love my job though, so being busy doing what I love makes me happy. If it was filing or all day meetings, not so much! (not that there's anything wrong with either of those things but I just cant stand them!)

Sometimesfraught82 · 11/06/2021 10:55

None neither But 8 hours a day doing nothing

I’ve been there. It’s shit

Sometimesfraught82 · 11/06/2021 10:55

Mine

Mytiredeyeshaveseenenough · 11/06/2021 11:17

I had a job once where I cleared the previous persons three month "backlog" in a matter of days. I could do the days work by 10 and I was crawling the wall with boredom.

If you're nailing the work and asking for more then chill. They can't moan at you as you're doing what you're asked to do and asking for more not just watching Netflix.

Oh, but they can!! If they decide they don't like you for whatever reason, they will make things so difficult for you that you will welcome the relief when the time comes to sack you! It doesn't matter how good you are at your job, or how productive, they are experts at making other peoples' lives hell.
Snoozer11 · 11/06/2021 12:18

I've had jobs like this and I used to count down the minutes until I could leave for the day. It was dreadful.

But now I have a job where I regularly work almost every waking hour some weeks, I miss it!

cuparfull · 12/06/2021 09:36

@TooInvested

It’s private sector

I suspected it’s quite common! At my last job someone went on maternity leave and her cover temp always complained that she had nothing to do and ended up doing 3 people’s jobs and still not being busy. Imagine how much higher unemployment would be if tasks were redistributed so that everyone working genuinely had 8 hours work a day!

No wonder productivity in this country is so low and Germany vastly outstrips us. What on earth is going on that people are soooo underutilized. Its just awful to hear when I know our front-line NHS / healthcare workers barely have time to sit down.
surreygirl1987 · 12/06/2021 15:47

I had this experience on an internship and I actually found it more stressful to pretend to be busy than to actually be busy! However, make the most of it. You've asked for more work so it's their issue. You're leaving anyway.

hopelessbusiness · 12/06/2021 17:10

I think anyone asking where these jobs can be found need to look at their local councils!
I recently worked for mine and was staggered at how little there was to do! 8hrs work could easily be done in 1, everybody complaining about how busy they are (!!!) and so much time wasted on bureaucracy, endless pointless teams calls, and Covid related nonsense!
Stuck it for 3 months, completed an online course and found another job. I have work to do now and love it!!

callmemaybee · 12/06/2021 17:12

endless pointless teams calls

This is it

callmemaybee · 12/06/2021 17:13

I work in public sector and will take home £2500 June payday…I can assure u that I have done nothing to earn that. I am literally on conference calls all day which could have easily been an email!

surreygirl1987 · 12/06/2021 17:38

Gosh. I'm a teacher and my work is never done. I'm in the wrong job 😂
