To be upset with DH cooking with slimy mushrooms?

He made omlettes for dinner tonight. After eating he told me the mushrooms were slightly slimy but not much and probably OK. AIBU to be annoyed at this? He knows I have a fear of food poisoning too.

YABU.

If you're going to be that precious to the point of making a thread here over a few past fresh mushrooms, then should cook your own food.

The things people getting in a flap about. ..

PickAChew · 08/06/2021 00:08

I peel mushrooms if getting slimy and remove any bits that are obviously past it. I don't get too precious about them, though.

Would you have noticed if he hadn't told you?

MaliceOrgan · 08/06/2021 00:12

he was probably just trying to distract you from the fact that the eggs had gone past their eat by date

user1473878824 · 08/06/2021 00:18

@MaliceOrgan That a really cruel thing to say to someone who has issues with food poisoning.

Though OP, you really don’t need to worry. It’ll be fine. He shouldn’t have said anything know how you feel but they’ll still be fine to eat.

RightOnTheEdge · 08/06/2021 00:20

Why did he tell you after you had eaten them? Especially if he knows about your fear. Did he do that on purpose to prove a point or wind you up or was he just not thinking?
I don't think that was very nice of him.

I am someone who will eat something past its use by date if it looks and smells fine but I wouldn't be happy with slimy vegetables either.

WTF99 · 08/06/2021 00:23

You really won't be poisoned by a slightly slimy mushroom. I prefer them like that as they have more flavour, and I am someone who is very alert to food hygiene issues generally

ErrolTheDragon · 08/06/2021 00:29

YANBU to be annoyed he told you... wtf did he do that for, knowing it would upset you?
If he judged the mushrooms were ok - which they almost certainly were - then he wasn't unreasonable to use them.

PandemicAtTheDisco · 08/06/2021 00:32

I worked one summer with a pie maker who supplied all the local businesses with several types of pies. She would only use very ripe mushrooms for the fillings. She said they cooked best and the flavour and texture was superior.

It's different for wild mushrooms as they can be insect infested if not picked and stored correctly.

skybluee · 08/06/2021 00:34

They were cooked at a high heat so I'm sure they'll be OK. I'm not sure why he told you after though. He should either tell you before - so you have the choice as to whether to eat the omelette or not - or not tell you. I don't see why he would tell you afterwards.

Ijustknowitstimetogo · 08/06/2021 00:55

If they tasted ok, they were probably ok.

Fusillage · 08/06/2021 00:59

Slimy mushrooms are going mouldy... I’m pretty robust about use by etc but the slime is literally telling you it’s off!

Ijustknowitstimetogo · 08/06/2021 01:14

Mushrooms are a fungus... that is mould!

HelgaDownUnder · 08/06/2021 01:30

I'd rather he not tell me at all. Slimy mushrooms stink like death. If they weren't stinky I'd be ok with it, but the smell usually starts before the visible slime.

elizabethdraper · 08/06/2021 01:35

You are complaining about your mould being slimyConfused

It's mould, it's supposed to be slimy

fallfallfall · 08/06/2021 01:46

It’s unkind of your dh to mention it after the fact.
If you didn’t notice them tasting weird once cooked I guess they weren’t that far gone.
On another note, no one wants food poisoning…

June2021 · 08/06/2021 10:55

So precious - you cook if it bothers you that much!

June2021 · 08/06/2021 10:56

People seem to have 'issues' with pretty much everything these days!

BlueDucky · 08/06/2021 11:02

Why did he tell you after. Seems mean.

JengaCupboard · 08/06/2021 11:05

I read somewhere a while ago that they're actually better once when start to feel slightly slimy on the outside. I regularly keep chestnut mushrooms in the fridge for a week+ and use them (cooked) once they have started to feel slimy or have darkened in colour slightly. I've never noticed a smell though, so maybe smelly would be indicative of being 'too far gone' to eat...

I understand people do have fears and anxiety around food safety, however I think a lot of fear is spread by manufacturing companies and total OTT labeling - contributory to enormous food wastage in our country.

JewelGarden · 08/06/2021 11:09

If they were off they would have been too smelly to cook with. Even the biggest idiot would realise when mushrooms are off. So I'm guessing they were ok even if they were a bit slimy.

PandemicAtTheDisco · 08/06/2021 15:01

If they smell fishy, sour or like ammonia then they are not okay - but you would notice the smell and not eat them as it's obvious. They smell slightly earthy when fresh.

If they've gone slightly dry then they are okay to eat.

You can slice them, and dry them or blanche them then freeze them to store them longer.

Use them quickly if they've started getting dark spots or going slimy. A little bit of slime is fine.

Really slimy mushrooms are not okay. They won't have much nutritional value and are more likely to upset your stomach - the molds growing on them may have produced higher levels of toxins. Don't wash mushrooms until you are going to use them or they will go slimy and have a reduced shelf-life.

SaltAndVinegarSandwiches · 08/06/2021 15:15

Well I think the mushrooms will be fine but if he knows you have a fear of food poisoning it was completely unnecessary to tell you about it knowing it will stress you out. I don't understand why he'd bother mentioning it?

Livpool · 08/06/2021 15:17

I don't like mushrooms so don't eat them. I assume you like them so not sure what the issue was?

If you aren't happy how someone else cooks then easier to cook for yourself

DirectionsForUse · 08/06/2021 15:24

I don't think there's anything wrong with cooking and eating the mushrooms but I don't know why you'd make a point of telling someone with known food issues after the event.

I'm all for honesty, butbthat seems cruel and unecessary

Sunnyupsidedown · 08/06/2021 15:46

Yes sorry I should have said the thing I'm upset the most by is him telling me. He knows I have issues with food poisoning. Mostly down to a fear of being sick that I've had since childhood. It just seemed mean. I would prefer he didn't use them. But if he already has and I've already eaten them keep quiet.
