I'm not going to lose sleep over this but I have to admit to being mildly miffed that dd wasn't allowed water at a birthday party. It's the healthy option , why would you say no?

hunkermunker · 19/11/2007 21:51

A birthday party where?

And given tonight's Dispatches...

Desiderata · 19/11/2007 21:52

Was it at a house or a village hall or similar?

Our village hall doesn't give out drinking water from the tap. That said, bottled water should have been on offer.

Desiderata · 19/11/2007 21:53

What was on tonight's Dispatches, hunker?

fireflyfairy2 · 19/11/2007 21:53

My dd has only ever had fizzy mineral once.. she threw up on her shoes straight afterwards.

Now she says to people "Can I have water please? Fizz make me throw up on my shoes"

How flippin' hard would it have been for someone to turn on the tap!!

hunkermunker · 19/11/2007 21:56

Tonight - 8:00 pm - Dispatches - Mark Thomas on Coca-Cola
Political activist, comedian and journalist Mark Thomas travels to South America, India and the US to investigate the way in which Coca-Cola and its suppliers operate and the extent to which they uphold moral and ethical obligations. Repeated on More 4 - 9pm on Wednesday 21st November 2007.

DH has watched it and recorded it for me - he's muttering things about Nazi Germany.

lucy5 · 19/11/2007 21:58

In a hotel.

I don't know what was on dispatches, Hunker.

She just doesn't like it, she's 6 and not trying to be a pain in the bum. just thought it was odd to refuse a child water.

OP posts:
lucy5 · 19/11/2007 21:59

ooh I like Mark Thomas.

OP posts:
bozza · 19/11/2007 22:00

Agree. DS went to a party in a pub and the choice was just fizzy and DS doesn't like fizzy. Should have been able to have water instead IMO.

hunkermunker · 19/11/2007 22:00

In a hotel and they couldn't get her a glass of water?!

That's not on - I'd have been the same at that age. In fact, I was. I used to ask for water (in a very quiet voice, if you can believe it!) because I couldn't bear the powdered orange and lemon squash bollocks that got served up. Didn't drink fizzy drinks till I was about 12 - didn't like them.

So, no, you're not unreasonable at all, imo.

Elasticwoman · 19/11/2007 22:00

Mark Thomas is on Dispatches letting us know how Coca Cola is depleting the 3rd world of water so that farmers are short of the precious fluid for growing food. Apparently Coca Cola signed an agreement to replace all the water they use by 2010 and are nowhere near achieving that. Farmers are getting beaten up for demonstrating against it, lies are being told, propaganda is bankrolled ...

All reminds me very much of a certain Swiss company whose coffee tastes horrible and whose cereals are overpriced ....

Elasticwoman · 19/11/2007 22:01

Oh Hunker already told you. . Must read thread more carefully in future.

Enid · 19/11/2007 22:02

were you there? why didnt you just get her some water?

[finds it almost impossible to become interested in anything mumsnet related]

pukkapatch · 19/11/2007 22:05

when i ask for water to drink, people look at me as if i am some strange being from the planet zargon.
when dd asks for water to drink, the offer her some of that nasty diluted ribena type stuff thinking they are doing her a favour, and i am a bad mummy for only giving her water.

Enid · 19/11/2007 22:07

actually I would have been cross because she may have drunk coke or sprite and then had a fit or something

[leaves]

i thought it was a legal requirement that such places give out water when its requested?

are they stupid?giving a roomful of kids coke and sprite?did they have coffee and redbull available as well?

francagoestohollywood · 19/11/2007 22:16

lol califrau. Our american nephew only drinks coke or pepsi (even worse). If you offer him sparkling water he looks at you in a mix of disbelief and disgust, as if you had offered something incredibly unsuitable.

Desiderata · 19/11/2007 22:17

Soda water (fizzy) is served from a gun at the bar. The same gun has tap water pumping through it.

There's no reason at all why they wouldn't give your dd water, except that water is free (including soda).

Were you having to pay for drinks?

WinkyWinkola · 19/11/2007 22:17

It is a legal requirement to give out tap water.

Desiderata · 19/11/2007 22:23

A landlord is not legally obliged, although he generally does.

If, for instance, seven grown men walked into a pub and ordered seven pints of water with ice, I for once, would refuse.

If they drink water during the course of an evening when they've purchased other drinks, that would be fine.

In the case of a little girl who just wants a glass of water, it seems very odd indeed.

lucy5 · 19/11/2007 22:24

no I wasn't there, it was a drop off job. She told me afterwards. I just thought it was strange. I think the mum was probably busy!

OP posts:
WinkyWinkola · 19/11/2007 22:27

Sorry. I'm wrong.

It is a legal requirement in Scotland (Licensing (Scotland) Act 2005, Schedule 3, s.9(2))

And as far as I can tell, clubs/pubs/cafes etc must have cold running tap water in their loos.

Desiderata · 19/11/2007 22:32

It's a fuzzy line, isn't it, Winky?

Since the year dot, everyone's had access to cold, still water in a bar. I wonder how a Scottish landlord would get on if seven burly blokes came in and ordered seven pints of water.

My guess is that he would still have the autonomy to refuse. A landlord can refuse to serve anyone.

I work behind a bar, and it's only happened once. Three men (not locals, I'd never seen them before), came in and ordered three pints of water with 'plenty of ice.'

I refused, because they hadn't earned us any money hitherto.

My guess, with lucy5's dd, is that the barman/woman was simply not in a good mood.

lucy5 · 19/11/2007 22:34

From what I can gather, the request didn't make it to the bar man/woman. It didn't get past the mum.

OP posts:
EmsMum · 19/11/2007 22:35

Ridiculous. no way would a hotel not have potable water. My DD doesn't like any fizz either except sometimes sparkling water with a slice of lemon or lime.

I've quite often asked for water for hot thirsty kids at parties in various venues and never had a problem.

I like Giles Coren's scoring in his Times review where he gives marks for water - top marks being for offering TAP first.
