I'm not going to lose sleep over this but I have to admit to being mildly miffed that dd wasn't allowed water at a birthday party. It's the healthy option , why would you say no?

Good reason to stay at parties with your dc then if you can . They probably wouldn't refuse an adult making a similar request.

It may be legal to ask for tap water but loads of restaurants will bring you a bottle mineral water if you just ask for 'water' unless you specify tap water (or even if you do). Even then you often won't get a jug even if you're ordering the most expensive thing on the menu .

Desiderata · 19/11/2007 22:40

When I'm working the bar and people order a still or sparkling mineral water, I always remind them of the free option of tap or soda.

My landlord doesn't like it, but the punters do! They only get offered if they've already purchased drinks, though. And most people are decent enough to only have one or two at the most before leaving ... or drinking.

lucy5 · 19/11/2007 22:45

Wasn't really an option to stay, as I said i am mildly miffed and not going to lose sleep over it. Dd asked and was refused, not the end of the world just a bit odd!

Quite!

Whoever they were, they were buggers.

Goodnight, lucy

I remember in my youth (100 years ago or more) going into the Hacienda (still can't find the cedilla) loos, desperate for water and the taps were turned off. Eeeeek. It was nasty. I was parched and broke.

lucy5 · 19/11/2007 23:08

Good night

I remember the days when clubs used to turn the water off because of all the ravers

We went for lunch at Morrisons the other day and DS (nearly 2) had a kiddie meal (not a particularly regular occurence).

He was offered apple juice, blackcurrant or orange. Not coke and sprite obviously but I was looked at by the cashier as a complete freak when i asked for water and when they brought the food it was with orange juice so i said i had asked for water and was told they would need to check that was ok. seems a little silly not to havbe water as an option.

ThingOne · 21/11/2007 03:15

Sounds ridiculous Lucy.

My older boy only drinks water too and I know people think I'm an evil mummy for not giving him anything else. It hadn't crossed my mind that there people out there who would actually refuse to give a drink of water. Bizarre.

It's my choice of drink as well.

ekra · 21/11/2007 07:48

My DD - who is about to turn 5 - always asks for water at parties. She's not that keen on Squash. It's always a big hassle to get the water and I usually have to ask a few times. I can never understand why a jug of water isn't put out. My DD isn't the only one who chooses the water.

MrsTittleMouse · 21/11/2007 09:04

I didn't like all the sweet and fizzy drinks either when I was young. I know that it's not a hanging offence, but it doesn't seem much to get a little girl a drink of water when she's thirsty. Unless there weren't enough adults for the number of children, which isn't your daughter's fault either...

inamuckingfuddle · 21/11/2007 09:22

yes it is ridiculous, we have had to pay extra for water in restaurants where they have a set kids menu as they can't deviate from the fruit shoots/coke option I always kick up a fuss...never gets me anywhere though

bozza · 21/11/2007 11:08

DS would have drunk fruit shoot or squash or fruit juice. He just does not like fizz. But I have taught him to ask for water as an alternative because it seems the politest request if you do not like what is on offer.

Elasticwoman · 22/11/2007 21:05

Seems unreasonable to me, to be asked to pay extra for tap water, Inamuckingfuddle. You can of course get up and walk out if they refuse. There are plenty of restaurants who do provide tapwater, if you look for them.
