To take my child out of school for a week to go on holiday?

I have been diagnosed with cancer and started treatment last week. I will have weekly hospital appointments and treatment from mid July onwards which means for the whole of the school summer Holidays I have to be close to home and might be quite sick from the chemotherapy side effects (but hoping not too bad).

We have the chance to go away for a week in the UK for a week in early July before my intense treatment starts. This is during term time. I've never taken my kids out of school before but feel this absolutely would be of huge benefit to us as a family so we can have some much needed fun time before my cancer treatment. I won't be able to go away until after Christmas (best case scenario) if we don't go now.

I don't even know if the school would authorise it but we would be prepared to pay the fine if necessary.

Kids are Year R & Year 1.

YABU - keep the kids in school
YANBU - enjoy your week away

YANBU

I generally don’t agree with term time holidays, especially since kids have missed out on so much of their education since last March.

But your kids are tiny and a happy family holiday before a difficult time with you being ill is worth so much more than another week in school.

Enjoy your holiday and hope the treatment goes well!

Definitely take them. I’m a teacher and I’ve seen school authorised holidays so they fit around medical treatment.

Hope your treatment goes well.

As others have said, it’s likely the school won’t be able to officially authorise it, but I doubt they would be giving you a hard time about it. I know plenty of parents who regularly take their kids out of school for holidays just because it’s cheaper.

Go! Without a seconds thought about it! They won't miss anything important & your family time definitely takes priority. The school will understand in the circumstances.

Hope all goes well. X

ForeverInADay · 07/06/2021 18:54

Absolutely do it. Perfectly understandable and I'd think most schools would be fine with it (and if they aren't, they are the problem, not you).

All the best for your treatment too. X

minipie · 07/06/2021 18:54

Absolutely go, and I hope the sun shines for you.

MaybeCrazy2 · 07/06/2021 18:55

Have an amazing holiday with you're family op.
Wishing you all the best for the treatment. X

Auntycorruption · 07/06/2021 19:09

Definitely go!!

Makingnumber2 · 07/06/2021 19:21

As someone who authorises mid term absences in a secondary school I wouldn't hesitate to ask the Head to approve a request like that. Some things are just too important and making beautiful memories with your children at a time like this is one of them. Hope you all have a blast and also that your treatment goes well.

NoMoreAngelDelight · 07/06/2021 19:21

Do it!!!!

Whatkatyforgottodo · 07/06/2021 19:23

hibbledibble · 07/06/2021 19:25

Do it! I'm sure the school would approve it, but regardless, I would go.

Sirzy · 07/06/2021 19:27

Go and have a wonderful time. Good luck for the treatment

ejhhhhh · 07/06/2021 19:28

YANBU at all. I'd most definitely ask, the school I work in would very likely authorise this.

Thighdentitycrisis · 07/06/2021 19:28

Definitely go

Overthebow · 07/06/2021 19:29

YANBU. Hope you have a good holiday

Whoopsies · 07/06/2021 19:32

GO!! And enjoy it, life is too short and you need to enjoy that time together before a tough few months. I've been through cancer and all that treatment brings, my inbox is always open if you need a solidarity ear!!

waleswhaleswails · 07/06/2021 19:32

I've taken my kids out of school the last 2 years - my excuse is paltry compared to yours.

Enjoy your holiday, you all deserve it

Aalvarino · 07/06/2021 19:32

I really hope you have a fantastic time. It doesn't matter if the head doesn't authorise it. Rules are generalities. Your situation is exceptional.
