To take my child out of school for a week to go on holiday?

I have been diagnosed with cancer and started treatment last week. I will have weekly hospital appointments and treatment from mid July onwards which means for the whole of the school summer Holidays I have to be close to home and might be quite sick from the chemotherapy side effects (but hoping not too bad).

We have the chance to go away for a week in the UK for a week in early July before my intense treatment starts. This is during term time. I've never taken my kids out of school before but feel this absolutely would be of huge benefit to us as a family so we can have some much needed fun time before my cancer treatment. I won't be able to go away until after Christmas (best case scenario) if we don't go now.

I don't even know if the school would authorise it but we would be prepared to pay the fine if necessary.

Kids are Year R & Year 1.

YABU - keep the kids in school
YANBU - enjoy your week away

Do it!

Oldandcold · 07/06/2021 18:35

Definitely take them. Good luck with everything it must be very tough for you all. If you write a letter detailing what you have written here I would think that they would not fine you.

Redissuereader · 07/06/2021 18:35

YANBU at all, I hope you have a fab holiday with your kids

FiveGoMadInDorset · 07/06/2021 18:35

Absolutely , we did that when DH was diagnosed, and mine are older than yours, good luck with your treatment

Pollypudding · 07/06/2021 18:36

My grandparent who lived with us and was more like a dad was diagnosed with cancer when I was about 14. We were given permission to take a week out to celebrate an early Christmas as he had an operation a week before Christmas and would be in hospital over the festive period. It also was clear if due to his age and other health conditions of he would actually survive the operation at all.

I'd approach the school, be completely honest about the entire situation, they are likely to be more understanding than you think. I'd take them out either way tbh but the school could probably be helpful.

Caramellatteplease · 07/06/2021 18:37

No brainer, go go go!!! Flowers

YesItsMeIDontCare · 07/06/2021 18:37

I'd do it.

Don't be upset if the school won't authorise it though. For most schools it means they can't officially authorise but they won't be bothering you about it ime.

HeckyPeck · 07/06/2021 18:37

Definitely do it.

I hope your treatment goes well and has minimal side effects.

glitterelf · 07/06/2021 18:38

Take them and have as much fun as you can. We're taking our DD out for a week for our holiday as DD has really suffered this year with DH being very poorly and two family bereavements. I emailed the school and have heard nothing back, like you were prepared to pay the fine.
I wish you all the best with your treatment in the coming months Thanks

TheGoogleMum · 07/06/2021 18:38

Yanbu. Hope the treatment goes well

probablynotthesame · 07/06/2021 18:39

I feel this is exceptional circumstances so take them out and enjoy, it's only a week and a one off so don't feel guilty about it, if I was in your position I would 100% do this. Best of luck with your treatment Thanks

drum123 · 07/06/2021 18:39

Do it. As an ex teacher, I think parents should be able to take their children on holiday once a year for up to two weeks during school term time, without worrying at all whether they will be fined. In your circumstances, the school are almost certain to allow this. Have a wonderful time with your family.

Hughbert · 07/06/2021 18:39

In your case, definitely go for the holiday. Sending best wishes for the coming months Flowers

Pandamumium · 07/06/2021 18:40

Normally I’d say no, but in your case yes. Go and have a nice holiday together. Good luck with the treatment.

riotlady · 07/06/2021 18:40

YANBU. Sometimes you need to do what’s best for your and your family

ForeverSinging · 07/06/2021 18:40

Yanbu. I've taken mine out for much less. Take them, enjoy it and best of luck.

newnortherner111 · 07/06/2021 18:41

Yes and I am sure the school will be accommodating in what are exceptional circumstances. Hope the treatment is successful and without too many side effects.

coffeemonster23 · 07/06/2021 18:42

Thanks everyone. I feel much better about it it now! I was worried even my 'special circumstances' would be frowned upon but glad to see that's generally not the case (so far!).

I will speak to the school tomorrow and complete their form.

P. S. Thanks for all the well wishes too.
