Woke up early this morning and the dawn chorus is fabulous. I am semi rural....only problem is I can't get bk to sleep but i'm ok with that.

My dawn chorus was a couple of seagulls in hobnail boots dancing about above my head on the flat dormer roof. 5am! Didn't get any sleep after that.

purplesequins · 07/06/2021 08:30

@eurochick

There is a great cartoon of two people dreamily listening to the dawn chorus and saying how beautiful it is and outside the window the birds are tweeting "fuck off, this is my tree", "no you fuck off", etc😄
tbh the parakeets round here sound exactly like old bickering couples Grin and the gulls definitely swear at each other.
Handoverthechocollate · 07/06/2021 08:32

Yes, beautiful chorus today. Its so lovely to appreciate the simple things in life...... Have a great week, everyone!

tywysoges · 07/06/2021 08:35

I would normally agree but today it was seagulls ripping up the bin bags left outside for bin day. Not pleasant (plus I had to re-bag my black bin Envy < not envy!)

sandgrown · 07/06/2021 08:36

There is a lovely blackbird here but his singing is drowned out by the resident seagulls !

noblegiraffe · 07/06/2021 08:40

Just me with a magpie? Not beautiful.

SoupDragon · 07/06/2021 08:41

The birdsong was beautiful this morning.

The screeching fox counterpart, not so much!

Celandines · 07/06/2021 08:47

What time is it approx in the South East? I heard it last year a few times but sleep through it this year

SunshineSum · 07/06/2021 08:48

It's gorgeous.

Apparently it's thought that they sing in the morning to let each other know that they're alive and they've made it through the night as there's always a possibility that they won't given that they're tiny and face lots of natural and human introduced peril. And also yes to establish which tree is whose. Although there's a lot that we don't understand about birdsong.

Cookerhood · 07/06/2021 08:51

This morning I had a nuthatch & a song thrush competing. Then the bloody magpie joined in. I swear he likes his head in through my window to cackle at me!

Cookerhood · 07/06/2021 08:51

pokes

FangsForTheMemory · 07/06/2021 08:51

@eurochick Actually at the moment it’s ‘want a shag? Come and get it!’

ufucoffee · 07/06/2021 08:52

I hear it every morning. It's so, so beautiful. But where I live, suburbia not rural, I hear birdsong all day. Especially from blackbirds. One of the reasons I love living here.

weegiepower · 07/06/2021 08:52

It's the best sound ❤️

purplesequins · 07/06/2021 08:53

the gulls are quite useful letting us know it's bin day. :o
they line up on the roofs ready to strike as soon as the first bin is put out.

SunshineSum · 07/06/2021 08:54

Blackbirds are the best singers.

Although we've got a robin nearby who does a complete greatest hits medley in the evening. Whistles, warbles, alarms, ringtones, everything gets thrown in.

purplesequins · 07/06/2021 08:54

we used to have a blackbird that sang the warm up tune of a trombone player who practiced a few times a day in our neighbourhood.

Love that!
Richter235 · 07/06/2021 08:55

I love too, but a gang of magpies squawking at 04:00 isn’t quite so life-affirming…

Disfordarkchocolate · 07/06/2021 08:56

It's lovely, the Magpies take a bit of the joy away some days though.

BruceAndNosh · 07/06/2021 08:56

It's wonderful.
I wish it didn't start at 4am

RickOShay · 07/06/2021 08:57

It’s one of the best sounds. We have a cuckoo near by at the moment. He or she really lifts my mood every time I hear it.

Thunderface · 07/06/2021 08:58

We have magpies too, lots of magpies. And lots of neighbourhood cats. The business of keeping cats out of nests requires a sound that can best be described as machine gun fire - ack, ack, ack. It is not a peaceful sound. It's worth it though when we see magpie families. Little magpies are very sweet.

I sometimes hear an owl late at night if my window is open. I love it.

wonkylegs · 07/06/2021 09:06

It's lovely and annoying at the same time. We are in a village but with a semi wooded plot and I swear the birds are noisier than the traffic was when we lived in the city.
I love them but sometimes I'd prefer more sleep
We also get owls at night who are very noisy even with double glazing.
