What would you do if you won the lottery?

Moneys always been a struggle for me. I despised school due to bullying and because of this I bunked off quite a lot. I didn't sit any of my GCSE's. Work wise there hasn't been many opportunities because I had no qualifications leaving school. I currently work full time earning just above minimum wage in an entry level job. It's ok, it pays the bills but that's about it. I have no disposable income once my rent and bills have been paid every month (like many people).
It's a constant slog. I live in a lovely flat in a nice enough area but I absolutely hate renting, I feel like I might as well throw money down the toilet once a month. I'm desperate to get on the property ladder but it's just so difficult trying to save whilst paying rent/bills at the same time. It will take me years to save up a half decent deposit. Jesus, they don't make it easy for people do they?

Anyway, this wasn't suppose to be a sympathy post. If I won the lottery, I'd definitely buy myself a house, nothing extravagant. I'd love to live in a cottage with a wood burner. I would give my family money, especially my mum so she could retire (only 3 years left bless her). My auntie as well because she's a single mum and also struggles. I currently work in a nursery and have worked in a few different settings over the years which (in my opinion) have been terrible. I'd love to open up my own child care setting because of this. A few holiday destinations might even be on the cards too, New York being one of them.

Would love to hear what other people would spend their winnings on? (If you're lucky enough to win Wink). Light hearted post! Money isn't everything.

If I won £10-15 mill..
I'd buy a massivo country pile with a lot of land
I'd fill said land with equestrian facilities and set up a riding school for DD to run
Buy several horses for ourselves
Buy dh the Aston Martin DB something he fantasises about
Go on nice holidays
Invest for educating any grandchildren
Enjoy a lot of wine
Buy my best friend's cafe for her
Pay off the mortgage for my 4 main friends' houses

Titterofwit · 06/06/2021 22:15

Going on this weeks lottery amunt.
I would buy property in several places . Not that bothered about mansions or anything but to be able to go to a house in different parts of the country /coast would be great . As we have a big family I would let them use it too and employ housekeeping and gardeners locally to keep them up to scratch. I would do more targeted holidays - when we can travel and always travel first class and stay in good hotels and have guides for exploring the locality.
For gifts I would give a good amount to each sibling so that they are comfortable and can leave work if they chose.I like the idea of annuities for younger people so that they can have money behind them but cant go too mad .
Besides these I think I would still be bargain hunter and maybe even still trawl the charity shops .

Kissthepastrychef · 06/06/2021 22:15

Is that the diaper lottery ? Or a phishing scam !

caringcarer · 06/06/2021 22:19

I only have less than 2 years left to pay off mortgage and on 0.5 percent lifetime tracker so would leave that. I don't really want anything. I struggle to think of things my dh can get me for birthday and Xmas tbh. I have 4 sisters and 3 children and a foster child as well as DH so I would share it with them and give some to.charity. Maybe DH would retire a few years early if he wanted to or ho part time. When I was younger I did not have much money and often really wanted things now I am older I am comfortable and want far less. Life is strange.

JaceLancs · 06/06/2021 22:19

I would buy a house - bigger than current one but not huge
I would also buy DP and DCs houses
Make sure I have enough left for a comfortable retirement
I would then give the rest to the charity I currently work for and go back to being a volunteer!

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 06/06/2021 22:21

Retire a few years early. Have a shit load of plastic surgery for myself. I dont date as I'm asexual.
Make sure my son and daughter in law could give up the day job they hate and pursue their dreams of a business.
Id live in a modest house by the sea. I dont want a massive place. Too big to clean, but beams and a big Woodburn.
Id pursue my many hobbies and get a really nice car and several more cats.

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 06/06/2021 22:22

My needs are modest so I think my charity would be getting single mums on the housing ladder.

@FutureDays - that’s really awful. Lesson being never leave anything of value to the National Trust. Feel sorry for the man who generously bequeathed the land to them.

Lucillegoldenring · 06/06/2021 22:58

I always say I would be happy with £100,000. Pay off mortgage and loans and a wee bit left over for a good holiday.

If the loans and mortgage was paid off my husband could give up work and I would continue to work.

PreservativeFree · 06/06/2021 23:01

Nothing. It would be nice to know I can retire whenever I want and that I have some money to help DC with house purchases when the time comes but right now, I wouldn't change anything. There's nothing I want/need that money can buy.

MrsDThomas · 06/06/2021 23:01

Sit on it for a few weeks. Just to settle things in my head. And mist importantly, NOT TELL ANYONE.

New car on lease like every one else so no one would say anything.

Plans a new kitchen, bathrooms. Decorating the living room. Gradually work my way through the house.

Then landscape the garden . Build the garage i have planning for the last 10 yrs which has now lapsed.

Then look for a place i can make a business of like a holiday let.

Im not into holidays, yachts, porsches. I like my life and would never change it, but just life with no money worries.

CaptainCorelli · 06/06/2021 23:14

I’d hand my notice in without a second thought. So sick of Groundhog Day, wake up turn on laptop do meaningless work, log off depressed and tired and then repeat every day until you get two days off for good behaviour at the weekend. It would be so amazing to have the freedom to spend your day as you choose and not wish your life away until retirement.

TheUnquestionedAnswer · 06/06/2021 23:15

Leave my job immediately.

Get my teeth done.
Employ a chauffeur.
Buy a house for myself, kids and mother.
Book into the Shangri-La while I work out what to do next.
Put money into a family member's care home.
Buy my sister a bigger house to enable her disabled dh to get around more easily.

It's such a shame they can just go against the original reason for them being given the land in the first place, especially as NT have been given a big grant by hsbc for planting trees and here they are selling land to allow a load of established trees to be cut down, really goes against what I thought they stood for.

1Morewineplease · 06/06/2021 23:36

I'd buy my own field and turn it into a wildflower meadow. I would just love to waft through one .
(Haven't seen one for years.)

Pinkylemons · 06/06/2021 23:49

I have an adult son with severe disabilities. The very first thing I’d do is to buy him a house and steal all the lovely staff from his current placement to live there with him and do amazing stuff with him every day. I’ve never though be beyond that what I’d do with the money.

Iecydda · 06/06/2021 23:53

Buy a house. We're 40 and 44 and still unable to, despite both working ft!! Then buy a dishwasher as that's something I've never had (kitchen in our rental is teeny tiny). OMG - the hours of my life I would get back!! Grin

ConsuelaHammock · 06/06/2021 23:54

I’d buy a large estate with lots of land and a lake for my husband. A seaside apartment for weekends. I’d invest in property to rent out so my children always have an income. They would be available to people on benefits and they could have long tenancy agreements and decorate how they would like , have pets etc
I’d quite like a wool / book / coffee shop but I would want someone to manage it for me.
I’d give my friend enough money so she never had to work again. She’s recently widowed and really struggling and it’s so difficult to watch her suffer. I’d buy a mini bus for my daughter’s school and set up a computer suite for my local primary school.
I’d give my siblings and my parents some money. I’d buy my dad a brand new defender and a big shiny tractor.
I’d get braces and liposuction. And a facelift

ConsuelaHammock · 06/06/2021 23:56

I’d sponsor underprivileged children to attend university so they leave without any debt.

SirenSays · 07/06/2021 00:04

The best doctors for my parents. The best education for my neice. I'd take care of family money worries and emigrate.
If I won big, like seriously big, I'd love to work on two causes close to my heart. I'd set up or help fund dementia care villages all around the world and help save the oceans.

bluechameleon · 07/06/2021 00:17

I have a dream about opening a children's bookshop. It would have lots of little nooks and crannies for children to curl up with the books and a little cafe. I'd run story times for toddlers and sensory story telling for children with SEND, and I'd do after school book clubs for older children. At the weekends there would be author events and workshops on story writing and illustrating and animation. I'd have enough money that I could do the fun bits myself but still have plenty of time with my own children, and I'd employ an excellent manager to keep everything running smoothly.

waveajay · 07/06/2021 06:46

Help my parents and sister.

Buy a bigger house with a big garden.

Retire.

Hire a nanny and a personal trainer.

Go on holiday.

Buy new cars.

Get into politics and help change things for the better for worse off people.

Animum2 · 07/06/2021 06:57

I would buy some land in the countryside, build a nice house and open up an animal sanctuary/and a place for pets to come when owners go on holiday

Dryadia · 07/06/2021 07:02

I'd build a house based on my dream courtyard house in California. Would buy it, but it is currently on the market for $10 Mill and has an annual property tax bill over over $700,000 Shock

I would also have a weekend home in the woods by a stream like this one. Absolutely love this, the young couple in the US that recently bought this as so lucky.
