Suit approx £100 (but have just sold for £60). He wore DH shoes. Share of transport cost was £10.

HandfulofDust · 06/06/2021 14:39

@RedthroatedCaracara

Why would a boy want spray tan and nails?

The same reason a girl might, I suppose.

It's really not the same though is it? Only a tiny minority of boys will want their nails done or a spray tan, compared to a higher proportion of girls.
HandfulofDust · 06/06/2021 14:41

I have one of each (currently too young to think about prom). I'd give my DS the same budget as DD for prom stuff (wouldn't be a huge budget). If DD wants more she can save up, if DS doesn't want to spend it all he can save the cash for whatever else.

fashionablefennel · 06/06/2021 14:42

The car rental is probably the highest expense for most boys.

Limos are tacky, kids have more interesting transport these days, but not all of them have a family mode of transport that is deemed acceptable.

BarbarianMum · 06/06/2021 14:45

@HandfulofDust no it's not ready the same but the interesting thing is why. When did needing a spray tan and your nails/hair/make up being professionally done become such a thing for teenage girls and why?

FricasseeTurnips · 06/06/2021 14:57

Sixth form uniform here is business wear - there seems to be a bit of a thing of buying a suit for Year 11 prom and then wearing it to school in Year 12.

meemaww · 06/06/2021 15:00

I remember my DD’s prom - so many really fair-skinned girls had a mahogany fake tan that it looked like a meeting of the Judith Chalmers appreciation society! 😂

HandfulofDust · 06/06/2021 15:01

@BarbarianMum It's just different social pressures for boys and girls. Same as for adults. Women are expected to invest way more time and money in grooming than men. A man needs one decent suit he can wear to every wedding and formal event. A woman is expected t wear a different dress each time and on top of that have her hair done, make up on etc etc.

lljkk · 06/06/2021 15:19

Bought him a Nice suit, also useful for job interviews and wedding we attended, nice shoes, didn't want any other products or grooming. Pack of beer. Maybe £200 with shoes?

the80sweregreat · 06/06/2021 15:22

About £75 for a new suit for him back in 2008 and maybe a trim at the barbers! The suit lasted him a while though for interviews too etc.
ds2 didn't go to the prom so nothing for him! ( result)

VienneseWhirligig · 06/06/2021 15:27

Suit - £65 in Matalan (he was going through a growth spurt so no point paying more, and more expensive to hire).
Shoes - £25
Hair - £8
After party beer - £15 for a crate

His group of male and female friends went together in a camper van owned by the parents of one of the girls, which they decorated. Each parent paid for a bit of after party stuff - we bought a crate of Sol.

Cowbells · 06/06/2021 16:22

Tuxedo £250.
Shoes £45 approx
Dress shirt £30
Hair already cut.

Prom cancelled. Hmm But he now has the tux for all other black tie events for the next few years unless he gets a lot bigger.

HotChocolateLover · 06/06/2021 16:24

£165- suit and accessories
£0- shoes (already had them)
£30 spending money
£15 haircut
£30 ticket

£240 in total

😀 She was always tanned as always on holiday with ' wish you were here !' Tv show ( showing my age now)
NeedNewKnees · 06/06/2021 16:28

£45 shoes
£10 haircut

borrowed everything else.

moomoogalicious · 06/06/2021 16:29

About £150 for suit, shoes, shirt and tie. Another £10 for a hair cut

Dd1 was cheaper!

mum11970 · 06/06/2021 16:36

Elder son suit, shirt, shoes and a hair cut. Younger ds should have had one this year but hasn’t got one due to covid, would have been the same. Dd had a dress from an online store like Boohoo which cost about £30, shoes, bag, nails, tan, hair and make up.

whiteroseredrose · 06/06/2021 16:50

Year 11 prom rented DJ about £50. Wore school shoes. No make up, hair or nails.

Year 13 prom we bought a DJ so about £200 for that plus dress shirt, tie etc another £50. Still school shoes and no make up 😂.

EssexGurl · 06/06/2021 17:42

We’ve just bought Y11 DSs suit in Primark sale. Together with shirt / tie total cost £50. He will wear current school shoes and get his hair cut (£15). No way would he consider fake tan or nails (!).

merryhouse · 06/06/2021 17:47

S1 wore DJ (used to be his dad's) and a fancy waistcoat (£35?) for Y11. Shoes... not sure, probably wore his school shoes Grin. For Y13 I can't actually remember whether it was the DJ again or his suit, bought from the outlet place for about £150 for interviews, shoes probably dress shoes (£50?).

S2 we bought a Pierre Cardin suit from the outlet place - ooh no, tried it on in the outlet but they didn't have the right ones so bought it in Debenhams, probably about £200? including waistcoat. The idea was that he'd use it for uni interviews and concerts throughout the 6th form... well of course he hasn't gone anywhere for his interviews, and at the first concert in October of the lower 6th we discovered that he'd grown a couple of inches and needed size S rather than XS (waistcoat still fits, though). Dress shoes, as before - £50 ish?

He'll wear the replacement for this year's.

Haircuts all about £10 (depending on whether they remember to go early in the week). Nothing on nails or tan Smile

merryhouse · 06/06/2021 17:57

S1 Y11 I took him over to a friend's house and a group of them went from there - I think in one of her family's vehicles, which have to be big enough to transport a harp Grin. One of the others gave him a lift back. Y13 I took and picked up.

S2 I took and picked up and I think am due to do the same this time. One group apparently arrived in a tank Grin

the80sweregreat · 06/06/2021 18:12

The boy who came to eldest sons prom on his grandads disability scooter with a balloon tied on it got a huge cheer !

colouringcrayons · 06/06/2021 18:13

Shirt: £20
Taxi: £10
... that's it.

BigSandyBalls2015 · 06/06/2021 18:18

Not boys but twin DDs and it did cost quite a bit ... only one with the tan but dresses, nails, hair, transport .... it all adds up.

Oh and the bloody ‘after party’ dress Hmm... it’s not a wedding why doesn’t everyone stay in their prom dresses!

chesterelly · 06/06/2021 18:22

I'm hoping to persuade DS into a kilt for his (I've got a couple of years) just checked and that looks about £95 to hire. I'm not buying as I suspect he won't have stopped growing by then
