Genuine question- does the birthday girl still blow out the candles? Tomorrow we host our first social event since the beginning of Lockdown 1. Do we fry her blow out the candles or is that icky?

OP posts:
Findahouse21 · 04/06/2021 21:34

I'd give her a cupcake with the candle in so that she can blow it out without the 'ick'

CastleCrasher · 04/06/2021 21:34

Ooh, good question! Haven't been to any children's birthday parties yet but I probably wouldn't let my DC blow out the candles at the moment, even though it would probably be a pointless precaution given that they'll likely not be distancing (or being particularly hygienic!) during the rest of the party! I was at a birthday party last week and didn't think about this! The birthday boy did blow out his candles and then everyone ate the cake (I didn't but that's just because it wasn't a nice cake lol). These people have basically ignored Covid though so I'm not surprised now I realise it.

mogtheexcellent · 04/06/2021 21:37

Just planning DDs party (4 school friends in garden). Shes going to blow her candle out on a cupcake.

Stichintime · 04/06/2021 21:37

You can lightly cover the cake with cling film, put the candles in and get the child to blow quickly!

KingdomScrolls · 04/06/2021 21:42

I went to a birthday BBQ last week and the birthday boy used a balloon pump!

MrsArchchancellorRidcully · 04/06/2021 21:48

Are you all having a laugh??!

Dc is birthday boy or girl. Dc blows out candles. Ffs!!

ftm202020 · 04/06/2021 21:50

Ffs! Are you joking?

Normandy144 · 04/06/2021 21:51

We've hosted a birthday party and attended one since the regulations allowed and in both instances the child blew out their candles. To be honest it's not something that even occurred to me to be concerned about.

Spied · 04/06/2021 21:52

I like the cupcake idea.

Totallyrandomname · 04/06/2021 21:55

Ah shit. My daughter is having a party for her birthday tomorrow. Didn’t even think about this when I bought a big cake....wish I got cupcakes now!

SmednotaSmoo · 04/06/2021 21:57

Candles blown out on side cake.

It might be a palaver, it might not do anything, but it sends signals we’re taking things seriously and reassures the more anxious guests.

museumum · 04/06/2021 21:58

I’d cut and plate the cake and out candles only on birthday persons portion I think.

DappledThings · 04/06/2021 22:00

I would find it very weird and sad to see the birthday child just blowing out their own cupcake and I'd find it hilariously silly to see clingfilm on a cake.

Just be normal.

londonrach · 04/06/2021 22:03

Last year in the summer my dd blow out a cupcake candle then cake cut up and offered separately. This year ive a Caterpillar with candles and numbers, think by hape which will be blown out separately. Cost £4 its wood and last forever re numbers but suspect she outgrow it around age 8 ish... works for now in covid times

Terrazzo · 04/06/2021 22:04

We had a party on Saturday - did a cupcake with a candle and then 2 Colin caterpillars cut up for party bags 👌🏻

That’s a great idea!
Terrazzo · 04/06/2021 22:07

Thing is everyone has their own limits when it comes to germs. We had 29 sets of parents who would get a full report of our party from their excited child, I was too terrified of incoming wrath to risk letting my kid blow out his candles in the usual way 😄 I agree it is sad.

Totallyrandomname · 04/06/2021 22:10

Thank god I read this before my kids party tomorrow. I hadn’t even thought about it!

Tinkling · 04/06/2021 22:17

We didn’t. Just cut the cake up!

OkOkWhatsNext · 04/06/2021 22:22

Dd went to a party at an outdoor activity centre recently and the centre suggested sparklers instead of candles on the cake...

Totallyrandomname · 04/06/2021 22:22

Ah we have a sparkler I’ll do that!

Nogoodusername · 04/06/2021 22:23

Both DC have had their birthdays recently and blew out a candle on a side cake

Nogoodusername · 04/06/2021 22:23

Had a sparkler on the actual cake too
