To be desperate to open my bedroom window open

menomary · 03/06/2021 19:45

So... in the past 2 weeks, we've seen A RAT in the back yard. IN BROAD DAYLIGHT, I tell you.

I desperately need the bedroom window open at night. It's too hot.

Am really worried about a bare-faced rat climbing in, though.

The window opens out to a slanted roof over the kitchen.

So:

  1. Do I keep the window open and breathe, risking rats entering my bedroom?
  2. Keep it closed and overheat. (I'm menopausal and subject to horrible night sweats)

In any case, wtf are they doing in my back yard at 4pm in daylight? I've put rat traps down but all the bait has gone and the rat just seems fatter.

Good lord - call pest control round first thing, you do not want the fuckers breeding more.

I think on the whole rats tend to avoid occupied houses so you will probably be fine (but maybe Google it) - get the pear guy!!!

Buy a grill/mesh for your window.

cupsofcoffee · 03/06/2021 20:21

Buy an insect/mesh screen to put over the window and call pest control!

PurpleMustang · 03/06/2021 20:40

Buy a fan and call someone in

Buzlightyear1 · 03/06/2021 20:46

Yea I had to buy a screen to keep insects out as we have massive river rats . I live in a village near Loads of farms and rivers. It’s lovely but there is a massive rat that’s been here for a while never gets caught by traps actually only has one leg. But I don’t fancy waking up with him jumping on me😬 so that he helped me.

Cleverpolly3 · 03/06/2021 20:51

Mesh on window
And rescue sine feral cats from a local charity. Don’t let them in via a cat flap or they will leave dead presents for you

WinoLino · 03/06/2021 20:54

Must be really rubbish to be scared like this, and there is nothing I can say to help you feel better about it but I love rats and wouldn't be that bothered. (That's no help at all I understand, also, I guess I love the pet variety and not the wild). You've had good advice so far though and I don't blame you for wanting window. Good luck!

WinoLino · 03/06/2021 20:54

Wanting window open!!!!

Bananarice · 03/06/2021 20:57

Foster a cat? Is that even possible?

You have my sympathy.

SquirrelFan · 03/06/2021 21:13

@Buzlightyear1 the rat only has one leg? How would it even get in your house, much less jump on you? Unless it's a very very strong leg Grin

BrilliantBetty · 03/06/2021 21:14

Get a cat (females are the better hunters IME) and some mesh. Also a fan?

Buzlightyear1 · 03/06/2021 21:15

🤣 yea that would be pretty impressive 🤣🤣🤣 I meant it had one leg missing . Although that would make me feel better if he only had one leg🤣🤣🤣

MumofSpud · 03/06/2021 21:25

In the first lockdown me and my NDN had the same problem - it took weeks of putting down rat poison as, annoyingly, the garden that they came from did not help in our effort!
We also both ended up getting cats!

menomary · 04/06/2021 07:29

The council charge £55. Does anyone know what they do? I mean, I know they'd probably put poison down but do they actually come back and check if it's worked or would I have to do anything (like check the traps myself and dispose...eek)?

I would get a window mesh

MrMeeseekslookatme · 04/06/2021 07:59

To reassure you, if the rat wanted to get into your house, it would have gotten in already by other means, not an open upstairs window.

Melitza · 04/06/2021 08:06

£55 is cheap. My dsis had rats, Scotland, and it cost about £300 to get rid.
The rat man said they were under ndn decking.
I live in a very rural part of France.
We have mosquito nets up in summer.
For 2 years we have had stone martins in the loft, which we evict for a while and then they return.
This week we have scratching in the loft, I think its mice, could be a rat.
Up the ladder again today to investigate and hope its only mice. I hate rats.
And we get snakes in the hedge. But they're usually just whip snakes.

Update:

So, I but the bullet. Knocked on the door and had a word. Turns out, they didn't know the extent of the howling. I said the dog sounded very distressed and sad. Neighbour advised that their other pet had disappeared 6 weeks ago and perhaps dog was missing it. Anyway, howling has much reduced now, thankfully, and I'm no longer calling through the wall trying to reassure it.

Was their other pet the rat? Confused

Phatpheasant · 13/06/2021 10:26

Ummm, did you update the wrong thread?

mogtheexcellent · 13/06/2021 10:28

The one legged rat was a pet?!

Grin
NorthernBirdAtHeart · 13/06/2021 10:35

When did the rat turn into a dog?!

CoRhona · 13/06/2021 10:49

You have a lot of animal issues.

Buy a fan for the rat and earplugs for the dog.

HTH

Notaroadrunner · 13/06/2021 10:51

Ask for their dog to come in and find the rat.
