Second vaccine, live alone, preparations

ThatSchoolOfficeLady · 03/06/2021 18:14

Had my second jab this afternoon, live alone. Have set up by the bed bottles of water, fruit, phones and charger. Just in case. Aibu, or at least over the top? Was fine after first jab.

Glad you think ahead but if you had no problems with the first you’re extremely unlikely to have any with the second.

Really pleased that you’ll be fully protected in two weeks 😃

FaceAcher · 03/06/2021 20:31

I think you're smart planning. Painkillers are on my list - getting a second dose of Pfizer next week.

Don't live alone so it's not as urgent for me. But in the main shopper and if I can prepare for the worst then that's less for DH to deal with if I take myself to bed and leave him with DC for a day.

So I'll get in some healthy snacks. Paracetamol.

Phone charger is by the bed anyway. And bedroom had a smart TV so Netflix and YouTube can keep me company.

If I'm being painfully honest I am kind of hoping I feel just bad enough to warrant a day in bed. But not so so awful that I can't enjoy the day in bed.....

Dishwashersaurous · 03/06/2021 20:32

Good luck.

I felt like death for three days after my first, dreading the second.

Blossomtoes · 03/06/2021 20:33

I felt grim the day after my first jab. I didn’t even notice the second one.

Dishwashersaurous · 03/06/2021 20:34

My vaccine reaction was significantly worse than I had anticipated. I felt so ill, much worse than I did after major surgery,. Couldn't raise head or anything for 24 hrs, crawling to the toilet.

I agree. Knowing I've now had both is a great feeling. I was grinning all the way home Grin

The variation in reactions is amazing. I'm 67 and have had both jabs (AZ) and only the slightest possible tenderness in the arm at the site of the injection if I pressed on the site a few days after the first injection and not even that after the second. I'm very lucky I know and I hope you are as lucky. Most people are, I believe. Smile

You’re right, nobody else I know had as extreme a reaction to the first jab (AZ) as I did. The second one was fine, not even a sore arm. I always seem to react to the flu jab, my bloke doesn’t.
IntoAir · 03/06/2021 21:21

I live on my own and it would never occur to me to prepare for being so ill that I couldn't get out of bed to get a drink.

I've twice been that ill. It's not pleasant. It was once quite scary, as I found it difficult to breathe for 48 hours, but couldn't have got downstairs to let paramedics in.

So now, I prepare.

EdinaMonsoon · 03/06/2021 21:23

I think you’re doing the right thing OP. Lots of mixed reactions to the vaccine if this thread is anything to go by but it doesn’t hurt to be prepared. I felt absolutely shocking after my first. Worse than when I had COVID (which was 6 weeks before so still fresh in my memory). Totally wiped out for 3 days in Excruciating pain & all I could do was try & sleep through it. For those saying that fearing the worst affects your experience, that can be true but I was very relaxed about the jab & felt that if I had coped with the virus then I would be absolutely fine with the vaccine.

HomeSliceKnowsBest · 03/06/2021 21:24

@BertramLacey I wouldn't be too sure about being ok after the second dose, my doctor said I felt so I'll the second time as your body produces a stronger response. I'm consoling myself that this might mean I'm better protected given my 'stronger response', but I'd certainly never have an AZ booster.
Agree 100% re. Mumsnetters general lack of imagination and empathy, not to mention possible agenda. It's laughable, I'm alright Jack so you should be too. Kills debate flat as there's just no reasoning.

WeWantAMackerelNotASprat · 03/06/2021 22:18

@Shoppingwithmother funny you should say this as at one point I said to dh, do you think we're making ourselves be ill as we've had the vaccine at the same time and are both dragging each other down! So I took our temp- both over 39- reassuring that we were actually feeling awful for real!!!!

WeWantAMackerelNotASprat · 03/06/2021 22:21

I don't know if it's true (Anecdotally it is amongst my friendship group) that those of us who have been working in forward facing roles and therefore potentially have been in contact with covid, all felt worse! Dr Hilary was saying if you have had it or been exposed you already have some antibodies fighting it which is why you feel so poorly 🤷🏼‍♀️

Throckmorton · 03/06/2021 22:55

Cake. I bought in a load of cake for my second jab, having felt shit after the first one. Felt totally fine after the second jab. Ate the cake anyway and felt even better :)

Dangleclack · 03/06/2021 23:03

My sister in law is a community nurse, vaccinated hundreds of people over the past 5 months, starting at the over 80s. She, and her regional health authority report fuck all ill effects barring sore arm and general fatigue.
Just shows the power of the media's scaremongering.

Because she and her health authority have checked every single person who’s been vaccinated.
MiddleClassMother · 03/06/2021 23:14

@HomeSliceKnowsBest
Why would you refuse AZ if you are in the safe age category, it is perfectly safe and the reaction is no better or worse than the Pfizer jab.

HomeSliceKnowsBest · 03/06/2021 23:41

The Pfizer jab has had much lower rates of side effects and they are refusing to give AZ to anyone under the age of 40 AZ here now, which doesn't fill me with confidence.

CSIblonde · 03/06/2021 23:53

It sounds a bit over anxious. I live alone & had 2nd AZ jab last week. I didn't set anything up even tho I had the shivers after the first one & took paracetamol at the time. I was fine this time & glad I'm all 'done'.

ShastaBeast · 03/06/2021 23:53

I have that all by my bed anyway, minus fruit which is in the fridge.

I was worried but was fine. There’s loads of rumours but it seems a bit random and being properly poorly is less common than just a sore arm.

ThatSchoolOfficeLady · 04/06/2021 05:37

Update - woke up feeling fine. Off to work I go. To those saying anyone with after effects are exaggerating or being dramatic, please don't dismiss the experience of others just because it is not your experience. I am lucky to feel fine today and double lucky to have been given my two jabs with zero effort on my part. To those who feel rough after a jab, self care is important and you shouldn't have to minimise it if you are not feeling great. Thanks for all the good advice kind people.

Doesn’t hurt to make contingency preparations before you carry on as normal.

RickiTarr · 04/06/2021 05:41

Glad you feel okay this morning.

Castlepeak · 04/06/2021 06:49

Glad to see you were fine. It was a sensible plan. Second jab knocked me down hard for multiple days. If I had not had DH to bring me water I would have gotten severely dehydrated. I just could not stay awake.

Can't be bothered to read the thread but this is madness.
