To think it is silly to have a baby shower for n. 2?

My local mother's group is throwing a big baby shower for a mum expecting her second child. We have been asked to contribute £10 each, and people are baking cakes, hiring pub marquees, etc.

Now I love a good party, but surely a baby shower is meant to be for someone's first baby (as a "welcome to motherhood")? Happy to contribute to most birthdays and such, but things might start getting expensive if people have a baby shower each time they have a child...

I don't like them for baby, no. 1!

I don't know why it's always branded as American and tacky. My family's culture marks the 7th (or there about) month of pregnancy for the mum to be with usually the women gathering to give advice, aunties, cousins etc celebrate new life is on the way and to show their affection for the pregnant lady. Some gifts are given but maybe not in the same way as the American style with the register. But it's still a bit of a right of passage for the first time mum. Lots of food, chat etc

Overkill. Self indulgent, awful things anyway!!
