WIBU to phone the maternity ward?

I am 24 weeks pregnant with my second child (9th pregnancy) and have felt baby move since around 17 weeks.

I had felt the baby move less and some minor cramping yesterday afternoon/ evening which I put down to ligament pain and didn’t think much of it as it’s early days.

I’ve woken up this morning and haven’t felt baby and still have the slight cramping.

I’ve read that decreased movement only really comes into play in the 3rd trimester and I don’t want to waste anyone’s time.

Do you think it’s worth ringing? I’m not asking for medical advice, just someone to put the mind in the right place!

Having worked as a midwife, I'd tell you absolutely to ring. You're a little too early to be able to monitor baby properly but, with your history, I would certainly send you down to the day unit to get checked out. Someone can certainly listen to baby. I'd much rather someone phoned up and baby started doing a dance as soon as they put the phone down, than them being at home, stressing out, or something going wrong. The midwives will be kind to you so don't worry.

confusedandshocked94 · 02/06/2021 09:10

Keep us informed OP!

I defo would ring - and did at the same gestation x

HavelockVetinari · 02/06/2021 09:17

Call them, they'll tell you to go in for monitoring - at 24 weeks the baby can survive even if born now.

Don't forget to bring something to read, your phone charger and snacks/drinks, you'll be there a while.

MyOtherProfile · 02/06/2021 09:18

Hope you managed to call.

QuirkyUsername · 02/06/2021 09:20

Ring immediately.
My midwife told me any reduced movements at all, you must get checked. And the whole reduced movements in third semester is not true, there maybe less space but they should still be active. Always always always get these checked out. Hope everything is ok and baby is just resting.

WhatsGoingOnHereThen · 02/06/2021 09:21

Like others yes call, but I am a similar stage to you and get lots of crampy pains, I think it's just ligaments/muscles.

I also have days where I don't notice a lot of movement but I haven't had a lot so far and have an anterior placenta, so don't expect that many.

Everyone is different though - if you've notice a difference from the norm call them and see what they say. Good luck x

dentydown · 02/06/2021 09:22

You’re not making a fuss. They will probably monitor the heartbeat for a while then send you home if there is no problem. Please go. It’s your child. This is part of the nhs maternity package. You are entitled to this care.

tickingthebox73 · 02/06/2021 09:25

decreased movement = always call - on your notes it will give you numbers to call, midwife team and or maternity ward.

Lalliella · 02/06/2021 09:26

Definitely call. Hope all is well Flowers

TwoTimingPotatoSalad · 02/06/2021 09:26

ALWAYS RING.

It is not wasting anyone's time.

I went in about 4 times with what I felt was decreased movement. There was fortunately nothing wrong each time but I was always made to feel I'd done the right thing and they stressed every time that if I felt the need to come back again I must do.

They'd much prefer to have their time "wasted" and be able to tell you everything is okay than for you to leave it and everything not be. Seriously please go.

TwoTimingPotatoSalad · 02/06/2021 09:29

I also don't say that to worry you either though because cramps and pains can be very normal.

But yes, it's always better to be safe than sorry with these things.

They'll likely just listen to babies heartbeat for a while.

If he's anything like my DS, baby will start playing football the minute you get there hopefully 🙂

HollowTalk · 02/06/2021 09:29

As everyone has said, phone your midwife. I hope everything is ok.

Chanel05 · 02/06/2021 09:30

Always call, don't wait.

Fizzy drinks and sweets are now cautionary, as they don't encourage regular movement patterns.

Wishing you a healthy pregnancy.

dazzlerdo · 02/06/2021 09:32

Like everyone has said def give them a call to put your mind at ease and check all is ok.

If they don't put you in the monitor then they will listen to baby's heartbeat and check you over

Dobbyisahouseelf · 02/06/2021 09:40

If in doubt always phone and get checked out.

MsHedgehog · 02/06/2021 09:57

The midwives always insisted you call, no matter how small your concern. So call, it’s best to be cautious if you have any concerns at all

shivawn · 02/06/2021 10:32

My maternity hospital are great any time I ring, I never feel like I'm causing any bother.

Aprilwasverywet · 02/06/2021 10:35

Never a waste of time ringing a midwife...

laura246810 · 02/06/2021 10:38

Whatelsecouldibecalled · 02/06/2021 10:41

TokyoSushi · 02/06/2021 10:43

Yes agree, definitely call, hope all is OK.

Blindstupid · 02/06/2021 10:54

Definitely ring - why would you even hesitate??

I hope everything’s ok Flowers

IEat · 02/06/2021 11:19

Gut instinct is amazing. You won’t be bothering them. Call and put your mind at ease

Derbee · 02/06/2021 11:19

Yes, another one saying to definitely call.

Notaroadrunner · 02/06/2021 11:21

Hoping you have gone in to the hospital to be checked by now. You've been through enough with so many losses and you need to put your mind at ease. Fingers crossed that baby is doing fine.
