To think current children's (especially girls) fashions are horrible.

I know that children's clothes always mimic adult clothing, but we've literally come a full circle back to the Victorian era in that it is basically an exact replica of adult clothing. It's as if now a girl hits the age of 7 and she moves from babyish clothing to adult.

My 10 year old and her friends often dress 'older' than my 19 year old! I wasn't a fan of the gaudy prints when DD1 was 10, but I'd take it over the current fashion for influencer/instagram clothing any day.

But then, if I had it my way everyone (and I mean everyone) would wear frilly dresses Grin

I don’t think that’s the case with our lot.

Seven year olds still firmly in kiddie stuff. Teens in crop tops etc. Adults aren’t Grin

ShirleyPhallus · 01/06/2021 12:57

I have a 14 month old girl and the range of clothes are pretty awful. So much “daddy’s little princess” and “I dream of unicorns” stuff, all garish pinks and purples with sparkles and hearts on. Boys clothing is all olive / navy / black with diggers and trains on.

Would be really nice to have a wider variety of nice, bright children’s clothes that don’t look so tacky

Mincepiesallyearround · 01/06/2021 12:58

I’ve been looking for summer tops for my three year old and a lot of the girls T-shirts’ have such frilly bits on the arm sleeves, I’m not a fan, I like her in quite plain style (but colourful) T-shirt tops. I find it noticeable with some brands eg Lindex, their baby and toddler stuff is gorgeous and then once they’re three and above it’s all quite grown up (some seasons, their currrnt season is ok) and there’s no differentiation between what’s good for a preschooler and what’s good for an eight yr old.

ColaOlaLa · 01/06/2021 12:59

I was looking for clothes for my 10 year old and most of it was awful, as shes bigger for her age I have to look in the teen section and it’s either really tight fitted body con dresses or hot pants crop top combos 🤦‍♀️ I miss the days of being able to dress her in nice summer dresses

Whyhello · 01/06/2021 13:00

My DD’s are 8 and 10 and I’ve found some lovely clothes for them from places like M&S and H&M. I can’t see an issue with any of it really, it isn’t adult-like (I wouldn’t wear most of it!). They just wear T-shirt’s and shorts at the minute, usually T-shirt’s or jumpers with leggings or jeans when it’s colder.

balulalow · 01/06/2021 13:01

@4PawsGood True about it being more teen/young adult fashion, but I do feel 7/8 is the age when shops make the switch from 'kiddy' clothes to teen fashions.

@ShirleyPhallus Totally agree. It's hard to get a balance unless you're willing/able to spend loads Sad

The younger kids range, this is especially at h and m, is lovely, lots of bright colours, nice prints and comfy things for boys and girls. The older boys section is also nice, but the older girls stuff is horrible. Everything seems to be either black or pink, tight, every top is cropped including hoodies.

Now DD is 12 she fits into some adult clothes if they do a size 4-6 and a lot of this stuff is nicer. In H and M I could only get her a normal length hoodie from the adult section of H and M basics.

Primark, Peacocks, New Look are all the same.

ColaOlaLa · 01/06/2021 13:05

Ohh didnt think to look at H&M just had a look and there stuff is much better than the stuff on George which seemed really grown up to me!

winched · 01/06/2021 13:07

I'm not sure if "the same as adults" is actually the same as "adult" though.

We are 29, 10, and 6. We all wear some combination of leggings + tshirts every day (polo-shirts if they have school) because it's practical and comfortable and looks good. The only exception is they wear crop tops and I put a top on over my sports bra.

I WFH and don't agree with formal school uniform (neither does the school thankfully), so they can go straight out to play after school without getting changed and adding more washing.

Then if we need to look presentable maybe jeans and a nicer top. MAYBE. But to be honest since lockdown I just invested in nicer "activewear" 😂.

Mostly always trainers, boots in the winter months.

I don't really understand dressing younger girls babyish, and I hate how boys get to wear grey and navy and black but you'll struggle to find that in the age 6 girls section. All those colours look good and wash well!

florafoxtrot · 01/06/2021 13:07

For a fictional creature there are an alarming amount of unicorns out there... Grin

I'm another fan of H&M.

Marmite27 · 01/06/2021 13:10

I agree. I struggled to get nice clothes for my tall DD1 who’s knocking on for 6, but in 7-8 clothes. (If I put her in 5-6 you’d be able to see her knickers!)

I got most of her clothes at H&M this year.

Don’t get me started on girls shorts. I measured last year... George at Asda shorts in size 2-3 were longer than the 5-6 Angry She has boys ones from H&M this year (in 5-6 naturally because boys sizes are bigger, and then they’re falling down).

TL:DR, check H&M out Grin

G5000 · 01/06/2021 13:11

I haven't found that but I agree with being horrible. Was looking for clothes in 8Y size and all girl clothes look like an unicorn has eaten too many cupcakes and thrown up all over the place. Pink, baby blue, frill, lace, glitter, sparkle, cutesy little animals. Tiny and tight. Shorts that only cover half the backside.

Bought her clothes from boys' side - decent lenght shorts, t-shirts she can actually move in, with dinosaurs. Why do you need to gender t-shirts anyway, young kids don't have different body shapes.

Older boys section in H&M was depressing. Black, grey, khaki and more black. And black.

MissyB1 · 01/06/2021 13:20

I think it’s worse for boys- particularly from about age 7 or 8. After that it’s dark depressing dodgy “fashion” bits. Most of it is just awful, George at Asda are the worst.

You can get some nicer boys clothes from M&S, sometimes H&M, or the likes of Boden, John Lewis etc but then you pay ££

I have a 12 year old ds, he wanted some basic plain t shirts, I can’t tell you how bloody difficult that was!

EllieQ · 01/06/2021 13:21

I know what you mean. I buy most of my daughter’s clothes from supermarkets, and I’ve noticed that Morrison’s do ‘Age 1-6’ and ‘Age 3-14’ ranges. The 1-6 ranges were what I’d think of of nice, normal girls clothing - tops, leggings, skirts and dresses, with a range of patterns including lots of unicorns. DD has just turned 6, and when I was looking for summer clothes in age 6-7 I noticed that the 3-14 clothes are more fashion/ teenage in style - cropped tops, slogan t-shirts, that kind of thing. I struggled to find ‘normal’ short-sleeved t-shirts and summer skirts and dresses. The shorts were shocking - much shorter than boys shorts for the same age. Tesco F&F range seems to be similar.

I can’t afford to buy the Scandi-style stuff like Frugi, unless it’s second hand, but it’s so frustrating that there’s such a difference between age 5-6 and age 6-7 in shops.

ColaOlaLa · 01/06/2021 13:24

I’m glad it’s not just me that found George Asda bad, I bought loads of nice stuff for dd who is 4 but when it came to dd 10 they were mainly mini adult clothes I ended up not buying her anything even though I wanted to take advantage of there 20% off I couldn’t find much that I would put her in, definitely not putting her in a crop top Hmm

santabetterwashhishands · 01/06/2021 13:32

It's hard to find anything for my 7 year old that isn't a crop top ☹️
I've never known it be so hard to purchase nice summer clothes!

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 01/06/2021 13:34

I agree H&M and M&S are the best for this age.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 01/06/2021 13:36

The only place I could find a suitable swimsuit for a 12 yo was M&S. Tellingly, it’s sold out in bigger sizes.

Snoken · 01/06/2021 13:40

My go to was always P.O.P (Polarn & Pyret), nice and quite neutral. Good 2nd hand prices on eBay too.

ChocOrange1 · 01/06/2021 13:42

I hate all the stuff with slogans on for little-ish ones. George at Asda is particularly bad for this. Also sequins (impractical), cropped tops and teeny tiny shorts. Definitely more like teen stuff than 6-10 year olds should be wearing.

My kids wear scandi stuff, mainly Frugi. Their baby stuff is (obviously) babyish and can be. Bit gaudy but they have some really lovely stuff for older kids

hibbledibble · 01/06/2021 13:43

I don't find this. Frugi does lovely children's clothes up to age 10. They definitely look like children's clothes.

MissyB1 · 01/06/2021 13:46

Yes lovely but they cost £££! worth trying to get second hand though. And yes to second hand Polan Y Pyret as well.
ladyvimes · 01/06/2021 14:02

Well I think frugi clothes look like pyjamas but each to their own. My dd is 9 and wears a lovely range of clothes mainly from Sainsbury’s, h and m, next. I think she looks perfectly appropriate for her age. She never wears pink or unicorns either but I think there’s loads of choice!

Kottbullar · 01/06/2021 14:03

I always seem to see really nice things in the girls section now DD is in her 20's!

DS2 and DS3 have moved into the older boys age group and there is very little choice.

Same. And agree re: oversaturation of the market with Unicorns. Why so many? There are actual real animals they could use. A horse is pretty similar or a Narwhal
