To think current children's (especially girls) fashions are horrible.

I know that children's clothes always mimic adult clothing, but we've literally come a full circle back to the Victorian era in that it is basically an exact replica of adult clothing. It's as if now a girl hits the age of 7 and she moves from babyish clothing to adult.

My 10 year old and her friends often dress 'older' than my 19 year old! I wasn't a fan of the gaudy prints when DD1 was 10, but I'd take it over the current fashion for influencer/instagram clothing any day.

But then, if I had it my way everyone (and I mean everyone) would wear frilly dresses Grin

Totally agree, just spent ages trying to pick some basic shorts and t shirts for 5yr old this morning in Sainsburys, loads of short t shirts and animal prints. Also so many dresses/ jumpsuits with thin straps and off shoulder styles. She Burns easily and these just look so adult to me. It’s depressing.

TropicalFairyCake · 01/06/2021 14:10

I really don't like leggings + crop top combo on girls (or anyone outside a gym really) . Yet this seems to be mainly what is available! What happened to actual clothes...

TropicalFairyCake · 01/06/2021 14:11

Agree too about off shoulder or cut out shoulders - my 9 and 12 year olds want norm nice clothes....

I had an ad for Sainsbury's clothing pop up on Facebook and clicked on a jumpsuit I wanted for myself only to find it was a child's one.
winniesanderson · 01/06/2021 14:14

Totally agree! I just want decent quality but fairly priced multipacks of bright plain or simply patterned t shirts that will go with everything. That are a decent length and don't shrink. Not random boxy/cropped ones with stupid slogans and unicorns on, in garish neon or boring brown animal prints.

DeathMetalMum · 01/06/2021 14:18

We usually get a lot of stuff from George as Asda, I stick to plain things usually and kids like the cycling shorts and leggings. We have had some nice plain vest tops and good quality t-shirts in the past.

This year everything seems to have friends or Minnie mouse on neither of which my 10 year old is interested in. Everything else is crop tops. We have found online good packs of cycling shorts, but that's it this year.

Lotsofsocks · 01/06/2021 14:21

My girls are 14, 11 and 9. The 14-year-old has been wearing XS men's from Primark. She has just started liking some of the women's joggers and t-shirts in H&M but won't wear cropped tops, leggings, anything with writing on or pink. One of the 11-year-olds will only wear grey, black, white or navy. Doesn't like leggings or anything with writing on.
All of them will only wear sweatshirt shorts from the boys' section as girls are too short! I also buy them boys t-shirts from Primark as the age 10-11 is actually that size whereas the girls are cut much smaller.

G5000 · 01/06/2021 14:24

Villervalla is nice - colourful, practical good quality clothes that look like children's clothes. H&M girl shorts are exactly the ones I'm complaining about. I mean compare:
Girls: www2.hm.com/en_gb/productpage.0922713003.html
Boys: www2.hm.com/en_gb/productpage.0933622005.html

And yes I know that I in principle can buy her from boys' section - but why does a girl need to feel she's not a 'real girl' just because she likes dinosaurs and trousers that are longer than her underwear?

Picklesbaby · 01/06/2021 14:24

Agree with pp! Dd has just moved into 6-7 and now we’re out of the 1-6 years section i’m finding it hard. (Next & George!) . Crop tops galore .

Ds has just moved to 18-24 months and now his stuff is all from H&M, babidu & zara cause I’m fed up of dinosaurs and tractors

ColaOlaLa · 01/06/2021 14:25

Is it just my daughter that wouldn’t wear “boys” clothes, so that’s not an option, she would hate that.

EishetChayil · 01/06/2021 14:26

I have a baby girl, but I head straight for the baby boy section as the girls' stuff is so frilly and gaudy. Why must everything have frills and ruffles!

G5000 · 01/06/2021 14:29

Or, just for fun, my son needs size 11y in H&M. In that size, your colour options are black, blue, grey. Oh look one beige as well. Where are the colours?

ColaOlaLa · 01/06/2021 14:31

I agree boys clothes are all dark and boring that’s why I’m surprised anyone would chose them for their baby over the girls (at least the girls have colour) when I had baby boys the boys clothes all looked so depressing mainly grey navy black! I use to look over at all the colourful girls clothes and wonder why all the boys were dark colours

ColaOlaLa · 01/06/2021 14:32

Oh and it was normally only a tiny selection of boys clothes in the corner hidden behind rails and rails of girls clothes

SVRT19674 · 01/06/2021 14:32

I buy most for my toddler girl in HM and Next, and very happy with what she wears, so is she. No idea about stuff for older girls yet...so reserve judgement there.

The girls ones are £1 more as well!

At least they have pockets, but yes that's ridiculous.

Moomoo42 · 01/06/2021 14:33

@MissyB1

I think it’s worse for boys- particularly from about age 7 or 8. After that it’s dark depressing dodgy “fashion” bits. Most of it is just awful, George at Asda are the worst.

You can get some nicer boys clothes from M&S, sometimes H&M, or the likes of Boden, John Lewis etc but then you pay ££

I have a 12 year old ds, he wanted some basic plain t shirts, I can’t tell you how bloody difficult that was!

I quite like George at Asda. I got my DS bright red Mario goodies and bright orange minecraft tshirts the other days. But my DS love gaming stuff. So I suppose that helps.

Next have always been good for basic t-shirts in bright colours up to teenage size. I used to buy them for myself when I was small enough to fit into 16yo boys clothes (not so much these days!) I got good ones from Morrisons last year too. I was really impressed with the quality of the Morrisons stuff too, much better than Asda for the same price.

Yes the frills! So many frills!
northbacchus · 01/06/2021 14:34

I miss Mothercare! The proper Mothercare, I know they have a small range at Boots now. Zara, sometimes, is alright, but we like Petit Bateau, La Redoute and Mango Kids have all had hits in!

What exactly are you looking for OP?

Lots of the uber fashionable, Instagram type clothes aren't particularly sunsafe either!

gratedbeetroot · 01/06/2021 14:35

My 7 year old is tall and in 9-10 clothes. I gave up on the supermarket range I used to love when she outgrew the younger girls range at a young age as there were too many crop tops and slogans. I’ve found H&M to be good. They have a lot of products so you have to spend time going through everything - not all are nice - but they have some lovely, reasonably priced clothes mixed in. I’m also a fan of Boden for lovely age appropriate clothes for bigger sizes. Very expensive at full price but they often have sales, there is always a code out there and they regularly send £10 vouchers out, making them not much more expensive than elsewhere.

It’s difficult for boys too; I also have a tall boy of a similar age and lots of places expect them to like dark colours like black, navy and khaki, computer games and terrible slogans. Not suitable at all.

TheGumption · 01/06/2021 14:37

I was really frustrated in Next the other week. In the little girls section every single t-shirt had either frilly sleeves, some random slogan or a horrible plastic character on the front. Boys section had plenty of nice plain cotton t-shirt multipacks in a range of nice colours. Wtf.

ComDummings · 01/06/2021 14:38

Yeah I agree. In general all the high street shops have awful children’s clothes at the moment. Boys and girls but the girly stuff is absolutely diabolical.

peanut919 · 01/06/2021 14:38

I have a 14 month old girl and the range of clothes are pretty awful.

I also have a 14 month old DD and don't find this at all. I think some of you must be looking in the wrong places - there are loads and loads of stylish clothes out there, far more so than when I was a child.

ItsSnowJokes · 01/06/2021 14:42

I buy a lot of maxomorra for my DD. That mixed with h&m and next for plain basics (leggings etc...) mean she is dressed nice and bright.

1n5piration · 01/06/2021 14:42

I struggled to get nice clothes for my tall DD1
Next do some tall leggings.

I found some cheap, long girls shorts at our local supermarket - DD complains that most of the shorts are too short. She has some shorty underwear and they are longer than a pair of her shorts Shock H&M do some Capri denim leggings.

She has one summer dress, also from next, which has shoulders. I don’t see why my DD should spend the summer sunburnt because she is a 9 year old girl and therefore should be wearing dresses with spaghetti straps Hmm

She usually wears T-shirts and shorts. Her favourite characters are supposedly boys ones so she has some boys T-shirt’s which are black, grey, dark green. She won’t wear frills (except for the one with dinosaurs on!)
