AIBU to think it’s really hard to find things to wear if you’re a pear shape?

I can’t tell if it’s just that I’ve lost my way since having a baby or if the current fashion just makes it really difficult!

Everything seems to make me look like a loo roll holder or about ten sizes bigger than I am. Or frumpy.

I’ve got some money to spend and can’t find anything to buy!

Fit and flare dresses are a good option. I tend to avoid clothes that are fashionable if they don’t suit my shape (like those tiered prairie dresses). Trousers are always hard to find because many give me a gaping waist.

Pivotthesofa · 01/06/2021 07:58

The gaping waist drives me mad
I have generous thighs shall we say so finding trousers or jeans is impossible unless they are stretchy

I feel quite frumpy in fit and flare I feel like they make me look even shorter than I am

They look so lovely on other women though. Sigh

I'm a pear and can only wear high waisted trousers or jeans with a belt

GraduallyWatermelon · 01/06/2021 08:32

Whoops posted too soon. Low or mid rise just aren't right on my body shape!

EwwSprouts · 01/06/2021 08:39

Agree with PP about high waisted is your friend. Wide leg trousers seem to be making a come back.

Dresses like this work for me. I'm short too.

Omg. Me. And I've put on weight so it's even worse. Trousers/jeans I've always struggled with. But dresses i do too, because most that fit the top, look terrible on the bottom!

SquirrelFan · 01/06/2021 09:08

Yes yes yes.
People think I'm more formal than I am because I wear dresses most of the time! Trousers look dreadful when top is left out (I look like a big triangle) and when top is tucked in (just emphasises the difference in size between top and bottom). Fit and flare dresses are perfect.

Poppynit · 01/06/2021 09:21

High waisted everything! I find the most flattering outfits on me are tighter bottoms and a bigger top and shoes with a chunkier sole. My favourite outfit is skinny jeans with a blazer or an oversized t-shirt and my chunky sole converse or heeled boots. Flat shoes with barely any sole make my feet look too small for my generously sized legs. I look like I’m going to topple over.

Oddly, my younger sister has almost the same proportions/measurements as me and is definitely pear shaped, but she feels and looks better* in baggier trousers with tight fitted tops and flat shoes.

*I don’t mean that nastily, it’s by her own admission. I think she looks stunning whatever she wears.

JorisBonson · 01/06/2021 09:22

Yep! I have an arse that would make a Kardashian blush and thighs to match (damn you high school shot put). High waisted everything and belts are my friend.

Pivotthesofa · 01/06/2021 14:18

@paintfairy this is me. And I'm short, just under 5 foot 2 so wide leg things just swamp me

I often wonder who they actually make clothes for, I'm an hour glass, nothing fits properly. Best friend is top heavy, nothing fits properly Confused

lljkk · 01/06/2021 14:28

I humbly submit that everything is cut for plump people or pears and nothing (in women's wear) for hourglasses.

I have discovered us hour glasses need to buy teenager trousers -- I am not kidding. Bless adjustable waists (hallulah, something fits my curves!)

SamW98 · 01/06/2021 14:37

I'm an hourglass and buying clothes is a nightmare. I haven't worn trousers for at least 20 years - its impossible to get a pair that fits my waist and arse properly.
Many years ago, Levis did jeans called Bold Curve - they were amazing, fitted me perfectly but they stopped doing them and that was last time I wore trousers

I fund jumpsuits are good or bodycon dresses other than that it's the tried and tested shiny legging and shirt combo

Pivotthesofa · 01/06/2021 14:38

it's so frustrating isn't it. I think a lot of my issue is that I'm short AND a pear. It's not a winning combo

OP posts:
ComDummings · 01/06/2021 14:39

I agree. I’m a chunky pear and it’s just as hard as when I was a slim pear to find clothes that are flattering. So frustrating!

jacqelinedaniels · 01/06/2021 14:44

It’s a nightmare isn’t it! I’m a pear with a largish bust - I used to fondly tell myself I was hourglass but the search for a wedding dress made it very clear to me I’m a pear and had long been in denial about the size of my bum and thighs. I loath high waisted, though now I’m wondering if I should try something on to see if I suddenly like how I look. I generally go for skinny jeans and looser top, love dresses but being short often get swamped in them. Just bought some loose flowing dungarees because the pics looked so nice - oh dear, is all I can say.

InvincibleInvisibility · 01/06/2021 14:50

I agree that its so hard! I have learnt to only wear dark bottoms otherwise too much attention is drawn to my arse and thighs (I would LOVE to wear white jeans but never gonna happen).

I recently lost some weight (yay!) But it meant my already baggy jean waists were totally unwearable. Ive had to go down a size and put up with slightly squished thighs.

Ive had lots of compliments from boden dresses that stop just below the knee (and this is from Parisians! )

HappyWipings · 01/06/2021 14:57

I'm your shape and height op. I wear tea dresses mainly. For trousers I tend to go for high waisted sports leggings or high waisted jeggings. Most of the stretchy dresses from boden are really flattering on me , I've got the lola dress which looks good.

I feel your pain though , I send back more than I keep these days.

PussGirl · 01/06/2021 15:05

Salsa Jeans are great for a big bum / small waist combo but they are pricy

In my youth in the 80s everything fitted me really well - I haven't changed shape - the clothes now mostly have no waist

lljkk · 01/06/2021 18:08

Snap PussGirl, I'm the same measurements now as I was as a teenager... 35-40 years ago... I could still find clothes that seemed to work in the 90s. But hence I now finally figured out to buy teenager clothes.

Doesn't work for dresses, but at least it works for bottom half.

SwimBaby · 01/06/2021 18:25

Have you tried highish wasted flarey culottes/trousers?

Hankunamatata · 01/06/2021 18:27

I used to get waists taken in (not so much a problem now with menopause gut)

MaMelon · 01/06/2021 18:35

I’m short and a pear too - it’s very hard not to look frumpy/dumpy. Someone on here once suggested paperbag trousers look fab on a short pear - they 100%, categorically do not. My family are still laughing at me now - even DH who is normally my biggest ally Grin. Oh - and the trainers/floaty dress/denim jacket combo is also not a good look as I recently discovered - the trainers made my short legs look even shorter, and with a big arse on top.

I find straight leg or wide leg trousers in a dark colour are quite good, especially with a fitted top. Shift dresses, shirt dresses or fit and flare are also good.

Pivotthesofa · 01/06/2021 18:37

Thank you for the sympathy and suggestions. Commiserations - it’s a bit pants isn’t it

What kind of Boden dresses do you recommend aside from the Lola?

JoveWhenHeSawMyFannysFace · 01/06/2021 18:50

I’m an apple and nothing’s cut right for me either!

I’m not sure what shape clothes are actually made to fit.
