AIBU to think it’s really hard to find things to wear if you’re a pear shape?

I can’t tell if it’s just that I’ve lost my way since having a baby or if the current fashion just makes it really difficult!

Everything seems to make me look like a loo roll holder or about ten sizes bigger than I am. Or frumpy.

I’ve got some money to spend and can’t find anything to buy!

I’m a generous pear and shift dresses are awful on me... big enough across the thighs, mean they are huge on top.
Still don’t know what the answer is.

SwimBaby · 01/06/2021 18:57

Have you tried midi dresses? Once that go in
At the waist with elastic are good.

JorisBonson · 01/06/2021 18:59

Wrap dresses are a good friend too!

Pivotthesofa · 01/06/2021 20:18

See wrap dresses don’t work on me as they either gape on top and wrap properly around the hip or fit on top and don’t reach around my hips properly

I feel like the midi length just makes me look short

I seem to live in stretch jersey dresses that are fitted to show off my waist but then I feel a bit trussed up and uncomfortable because fitted dresses aren’t really an every day for me

I love all these floaty maxi dresses with puff sleeves but I look awful in them.

Jeans I still wear skinnies but struggle with fit and the inner thighs always eventually rip Blush

I'm an apple and find waists too tight and the hips too wide on most trousers, they look like jodhpurs on me. The worst offenders are Next and M&S so maybe they are good for pears. My daughters are going to both be pear shaped and I have no idea how to dress them anymore.

RampantIvy · 01/06/2021 20:46

I'm a pear as well, and find that most clothes are cut for straight up and down people. I do find that there is more choice in jeans these days though. I bought my last pair from Sainsburys, and they fit nicely.

I find empire style dresses a good fit, and stretchy A line skirts or skirts with an elasticated waist fit better than pencil skirts.

Pivotthesofa · 01/06/2021 21:17

I’m currently browsing and just feel so lost, I have no idea what to look at.
I have hardly anything to wear in the warm
Weather and the things I do have don’t fit properly so I feel scruffy or like a misshapen lump in them!

Just to add to the gaping trousers - I've had this for years and always had to use a belt. However there's a lot of drapey smart and causal trousers now that have elasticated or part elasticised waistbands which solve this issue.

SapphosRock · 01/06/2021 21:48

Me too!

I find M&S Mom jeans and shorts really comfortable and no builders bum. The high waist is flattering with a vest or teeshirt tucked in.

For a smarter look the jump suits in Whistles work well for pears.

JorisBonson · 01/06/2021 22:06

@Pivotthesofa I get that with wrap dressed too, but I'm not ashamed to say I have worn 2 bras to balance it out!

MadMadMadamMim · 01/06/2021 22:08

Commiserations, OP. I was always a pear shape and it's really difficult.

If it cheers you up, I'm now post menopause and definitely apple shaped - which is MUCH worse to buy for! At least when I was pear shaped I had a waist. Grin

paintfairy · 02/06/2021 08:35

Yeah wrap dresses and t shirt dresses are a no no for me. Things that work are ones that go in at the waist and then flare out. Problem is- in my old age I'm now beginning to get a stomach as well. 🙄 I'm not a dress person so wearing them casually for me is weird. I tend to wear jeans but now it's warmer that's a struggle! If I wear bigger tops then I just look like a blimp. And I struggle to get anything to fit on the bottom.

StoneofDestiny · 02/06/2021 09:08

Just reading this re High Waist Jeans - yet to find High Waist jeans that are really high waist. Any ideas?

lljkk · 02/06/2021 09:39

shorts.... in warm weather ?

Why not wear shorts?

One thing that is common are elasticated or drawstring waist half-length light weight fabric trouser/short type things.

calamityjam · 02/06/2021 10:03

I'm an hourglass. My waist is 10 inches smaller than my hips so jeans are almost impossible to find. I'm also only 5 foot 3 and a size 16, so if I wear anything baggy it swamps me or makes me look huge. I did buy a lovely play suit from Asda the other day as I was desperate for something summery to wear. It's perfect it skims my hips and fits my boobs. It's 3/4 length and slightly wide leg. Best thing I've bought in ages

RampantIvy · 02/06/2021 10:36

My waist is 12" smaller than my hips @calamityjam, and I have no trouble finding jeans to fit. I have jeans from M and S and Sainsburys.

cheezy · 02/06/2021 11:07

I also have no problem with jeans fitting, I think because I wear them lower down on my hips rather than on my waist.
Seasalt! Seasalt are often good for dresses I find. Look for empire line ones on eBay. I love Seasalt and am always recommending it though it can be frumpy. I have some dresses that I live in during summer. The Beatrice or Lottie style is very flattering to us pears.

RampantIvy · 02/06/2021 11:13

I am a recent Seasalt convert

Lonecatwithkitten · 02/06/2021 11:21

I gave up looking for my self and went for Lookerio and Stitch fix mixed together. As one is Europe based and the other UK/USA you get a mix of brands. In particular only jeans are amazing for my hour glass shape.
I just no longer go to clothes shops as I got so dispirited.

HappyWipings · 02/06/2021 11:22

@Pivotthesofa the other boden dress I have is like the lola one , but has like a t shirt top instead of a wrap. It doesnt look like a skater style skirt on me , but it's not too tight and very flattering.

I've actually decided to attempt making my own clothes , as I'm so sick of things fitting wrong. I've not used a sewing machine in over a decade , and have only done simple repairs using hand sewing lately , but I'm going to give it a go.

gngfh27 · 02/06/2021 11:25

I have broad shoulders and even that is a nightmare. Where do people buy teenage trousers from? Havent thought of doing that but I am short and have quite a big difference between my hips and waist so adjustable waists would be ideal

lljkk · 02/06/2021 22:04

Teen clothes:
Primark, M&S, H&M? Even supermarkets. They come with adjustable waists. Marvelous.

I also have occasional broad shoulder problems -- eg. sport clothes like a women's tri-suit I bought was hopeless, fine on hips, waist & boobs but no chance on shoulders. I resort to men's cut items & my shoulders are fine in those.

gngfh27 · 02/06/2021 22:11

Thanks! I didnt know they kept the adjustable waist thing going for teens. I got little ones and the adjustable waists for them are invaluable. Will check the teen sections for myself

MrMeeseekslookatme · 02/06/2021 22:19

I disagree OP. But that is only because I have reached the stage where I know what I like, I know where I can get what I like and I just shop there all of the time. I don't follow fashion anymore.

I am short, size 18 and pear shaped. I tend to wear dresses. I love Popsy. They have an alteration service and I get everything customised to suit my tastes, so all the dresses shortened to knee length. For jeans, i get everything from Next petite range. They always have some kind of high waisted stretchy skinny jean that does the job. I keep to simple dark colours on the bottom and bright colours or patterns on top.

I do need to dress a bit smarter even with casual things. Baggy jeans, mum jeans or joggers don't suit me. I will still wear joggers if I want to be comfy though.

Fkrkrodps · 02/06/2021 22:25

I’m a short pear too. I often feel frumpy and dumpy. Even when I think I look ok, a photo soon puts me right. I am also short of leg and thick of ankle. It’s not a winning combination. All the short baggy tops that are around at present do me no favours. I completely empathise with your predicament.

I buy a- line dresses and straight leg jeans. Skinny jeans are terrible on me. I love the look of some short jackets I’ve seen but I just know they will look awful on me.
