To think this isnt edible??

So chilling in the garden today with dp and fil, and then fil asks if we like haggis, goes to the kitchen and gets a packet of 4 haggis slices. I say yes, but unsure what hes planning with these slices straight from the fridge.

And he eats it straight out of the packet?? Dp agreed that they were edible and had a slice, and they both though i was strange for passing on the offer for not eating raw haggis??

I know that technically the process of making the haggis boils it so it is theoretically 'cooked' but i dont think its ok to eat straight out of the packet like that without grilling or frying??

Am i the weird one or ainbu by saying this is not how you eat haggis?

They also thought that this was an appropriate way to eat black pudding as well, which is even worse due to the blood imo.

For full disclosure, im scottish, dp and fil are not haha

Haggis definitely needs cooked, also a Scot married to an engerlander!

ShutUpAlex · 30/05/2021 21:34

What type? I’ve just googled one and it says raw product, must be cooked.

bunnybutts · 30/05/2021 21:34

That's disgusting. It needs to be cooked.

Beforeiwasrichandfamous · 30/05/2021 21:35

Cold black pudding from the fridge on a sandwich with brown sauce is lovely.

IHaveBrilloHair · 30/05/2021 21:36

I thought you could, I wouldn't though, I'd cook it first.

Mylittlesandwich · 30/05/2021 21:38

Nope! Scottish, living in Scotland. Haggis needs cooked!

ChatterMonkey · 30/05/2021 21:38

It was the haggis slices from aldi. I had a look online, it doesnt say it can be eaten cold but doesnt say it cant either so im not sure. It does have cooking instructions which list grilling or frying, and does not suggest eating out of the packet...

@beforeiwasrichandfamous is that cold as in straight from the supermarket or cold as in leftovers from the morning's fry up?

Scrowy · 30/05/2021 21:38

Well haggis needs to be cooked.

But slices of haggis suggests to me that it's been cooked and then sliced.

Black pudding is nearly always already cooked when you buy it and can be eaten cold, although most people prefer to reheat it.

Namechangedlady · 30/05/2021 21:39

Can you buy pre cooked haggis?

ChatterMonkey · 30/05/2021 21:41

groceries.aldi.co.uk/en-GB/p-macaulays-haggis-slices-200g/4088600041735

It was this sort of slices, it doesnt say that its cooked or ready to eat any more than a bung of haggis you might get elsewhere?

motogogo · 30/05/2021 21:43

Pretty sure it's like corned beef or whatever, it's in the deli section

But it's sliced. And presumably in with the other sliced meats.

Common sense surely dictates it's ready to eat?

SkintSingleMother · 30/05/2021 21:45

I've never bought the slices but I'm guessing that haggis wouldn't be in a sliceable state if it wasn't already cooked?

So I dunno but regardless of food safety, what kind of family of savages are you married into that wastes good haggis by treating it as some kind of poncey charcuterie cold cut? Tell them to get a hold of a deep fat fryer or get to fuck. What did they have with it? Fucking chablis?

ChatterMonkey · 30/05/2021 21:47

Haggis is definitely able to be sliced before cooked. In fact easier to slice before frying/grilling as the cold fat holds its shape better.

I just couldnt believe it, i like haggis, habe eaten it with many different things, and had it as part of breakfasts lunches and dinners, but never ever eaten it cold in that form, or heard of anyone else doing so.

I would guess that the sliced packs are more for ease of cooking rather than comparing to sliced ham, so equivelant to diced chicken rather than a whole breast. Generally you slice haggis before cooking (when frying for breakfasts, stuffing etc) so it is more 'prepared' rather than 'precooked' i would have thought.

The instructions say "Ensure product is thoroughly cooked and piping hot throughout"
Tartyflette · 30/05/2021 21:52

Oddly enough we had haggis slices today. The label said it should be 'heated'.
I think it was pre-cooked and sliced and thus only needed reheating. Instructions said microwave, grill or fry.

It says cook thoroughly.

It's in the section with sausage and bacon, not the deli
Tartyflette · 30/05/2021 22:01

The ones we had were definitely pre-cooked (vegetarians look away now) -- the ingredients were lambs' lung, beef fat, oatmeal, salt and spices.
I think raw lambs' lung would be very rubbery inedible.

OldTinHat · 30/05/2021 22:07

It says this on the product info you've linked to OP: 'Ensure product is thoroughly cooked and piping hot throughout'

CoffeeCakey · 30/05/2021 22:10

That needs cooking. They've eaten raw lambs lung

Hardertobreathe · 30/05/2021 22:12

As pp said, it needs to be cooked

“Brand name, Macaulay's. Storage ... Ensure product is thoroughly cooked and piping hot throughout. ... Legal name, Haggis slices with lamb offal, beef fat and spices ... If you have any questions contact Customer Services on 0800 042 0800 “

If you have any questions contact Customer Services on 0800 042 0800 maybe give them a call and ask? Or a tweet.
